On Saturday, May 14, 2022, military personnel, along with friends, family, and honored guests, gathered for a night of camaraderie, tradition, and tribute to honor those who have served our country and those still serving our nation. The Southwest Montana Military “Dine Out” was started ten years ago by Montana Youth Challenge Academy Director Lieutenant Colonel Trent Gibson, Montana Army National Guard, and local business owner Ron Carroll, Montana Army National Guard retiree. The Dine Out is a tradition, uniting influences from all military branches to showcase those who have served our country, those who are still serving, and the traditions entwined in their joined companionship. The main difference between a Dine In versus a Dine Out for military occasions is that guests are welcomed in the latter, allowing the soldier’s family and friends to attend this esteemed function. This way, the civilians can participate in the military atmosphere, while getting a taste of the stricter lifestyle. The event kicked off with the President and Vice President explaining the rules and reverence of what you were about to experience. Though the ceremony allowed for fun and chatter, the expectations from the script could be seen as rigid and everyone was expected to follow along. In that sense, civilians would get a taste of the military lifestyle. One special moment was The Tribute to the Fallen Ceremony, where those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for one’s service were honored. A table was set with various items, each holding a special significance to those who have served. To the naked eye, this somber moment enlightened and set a special stage that civilians could marvel at from a distance. For lighter entertainment, the infamous Grog Bowl was introduced. The Grog legend dates back to the times of King Arthur, which has since been adapted to fit the military branches. The Grog contains many items, each one representing a place in time to pay respect to what the military has accomplished, where those who serve have come from, and what they stand for. After all the items have been added, the Grog is then enchanted, and the master of the grog performs the duties assigned to them This year’s lucky recipient of that title was Ben Stewart. Once the symbolic ingredients were added, the Grog was prepared and tested, and a night of dining and storytelling was had by all those in attendance. If you broke the rules of the mess, you had to pay respect to the Grog. Or if the President or Vice President believed you were not living up to the rules and expectations of the Dine Out, you also could be required to salute the Grog. Following dinner, Gerald Penn of the Elks gave a quick history lesson of how the Elks were formed and what the mission of the Elks Lodge was. He stated, “We have around 60 guests this year for this experience. The Elks will continue to work with Trent, and next year we want to see 100 people in the Lodge. We want to work to pack the Lodge, that is what we are here for, that is what we do.” SWMT News would like to thank Ron Carroll for the invitation to attend this ceremony. It was a night that my wife and I were honored to be invited to and will never forget. Thank you to all those who have served and are serving our country.

The Madison River Work Group will hold its next meeting Thursday, May 19, at 5:30 p.m., in Bozeman at the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 3 Headquarters office, 1400 South 19th Ave. The meeting will be livestreamed on the FWP website . The focus of the meeting will be non-commercial use options for the Madison River. Other agenda items include: Work group updates Commercial use New outfitters Fishing access site improvements River ambassador pilot Plan for June 22 commission meeting and future meeting dates The 12-member work group was organized by the Fish and Wildlife Commission, per an administrative rule. The Governor’s Office of Community Service (ServeMontana), Reach Higher Montana, and Montana Campus Compact (MTCC) are pleased to announce 83 Montana high school seniors have been awarded a $1,200 Youth Serve Montana Scholarship. The Youth Serve Montana Scholarship was created to promote volunteerism among high school students. Funds are available through support from Montana Campus Compact , a network of Montana campuses committed to community service; Reach Higher Montana , a nonprofit dedicated to helping students pursue and fund post-secondary education; and the Governor’s Office of Community Service , the state agency tasked with expanding and promoting community service in Montana. The Governor’s Office of Community Service administers the scholarship funds. “We are excited to see another class of freshmen coming into Montana’s colleges and universities equipped with the passion and skills for community engagement,” said Josh Vanek, Executive Director of MTCC. “As we emerge from COVID, these students embody the spirit of service on Montana campuses.” Scholarship recipients completed at least 50 hours of volunteer service during the past year. Many awardees exceeded 75 and even 100 hours. “We are proud of these outstanding students and offer our sincere gratitude for their service across Montana,” said Kelly Cresswell, Executive Director of Reach Higher Montana. Recipients that will be attending the University of Montana Western in the fall of 2022 include Hayden Hedges from Cut Bank High School, Mariya Tregidga from Butte Central Catholic High School, and Kya Wood from Flathead High School. The Youth Serve Montana Scholarship is offered annually with the application opening each fall. The Dillon Cub's hosted the Anaconda A's on Sunday May 15th. Initially the game was going to be held in Anaconda on the A's home field, but due to the field not being ready the Dillon Cub's hosted the game on their home field at Ray Lynch Park. The Cub's played Anaconda earlier in the season and won the first game and the second game was cut short after an Anaconda player was injured and the A's didn't have enough players to finish the game. Coming off a two game loss to the Missoula Impact on Saturday the Cub's were eager to redeem themselves against Anaconda. In game 1 the Cubs came out on top with a 12 to 5 win over the A's. In game two the Cub's were able to catch their second win with a final score of 8 to 5. Saturday, May14th was the 5th annual Beaverhead Marathon, hosted by the Montana Running Company. The annual marathon draws runners from across the United States as they take in the views the valley has to offer. The full marathon starts at the Horse Prairie Camp ground at Clark Canyon reservoir. and follows the Beaverhead River towards Dillon. The half marathon starts at the turn to the old Montaqua bottling facility, follows the Beaverhead River to Barrett's Park then runners take the old stage road towards town. Both marathons finish at the Beaverhead brewing Company. This years runners had cloudy skies and a nice cool temperature to help keep them from getting overheated. We were also lucky enough to conduct a live burn on an acquired structure with other fire departments from around the area as well as Beaverhead Emergency Medical Services. We are currently preparing for the upcoming wildfire season by completing the annual RT130 Wildland Refresher class with the DNRC & completing the annual work capacity test for wildland firefighters.

Saturday May, 14 the Dillon Cubs hosted the Missoula Impact at Ray Lynch Park. This year's Cubs are a younger team and they are building on it. The unique part of American Legion Baseball is a kid playing can be as young as 12 and as old as 19. The Cubs players fit this age gap as they have starters as young as 12 and Seniors in High School playing beside them. With the team being full of fresh faces and players they have struggled a little to come into their own at the beginning of this year's season. Saturday's game was one of those times as the team fell in both games to the Missoula Impact. With a first game loss at 14 to 9 to a second game loss of 16 to 8. The Facility Services Department at the University of Montana Western would like to share with the University and Dillon community some updates on projects that will be taking place over the next few months. Atlantic Street Frontage Project Completion The project contractor will begin work on-site starting the week of May 16th to complete the project. Work to be completed will include installation of underground sprinklers and sod, the application of salvaged rocks from the old retaining wall to the fronts of the new concrete planters in front of Main Hall, and the planting of shrubs, bushes, and trees. Completion of the project is expected to take 30 – 45 days. Tree Health Assessment and Management During the summer, campus personnel, with support from the Department of Natural Resource Conservation and the Dillon Tree Board, will conduct a complete campus tree inventory that will list each tree by species and location and report the current state of health of each tree. This inventory will then be used to inform campus master planning for the management of trees on the Montana Western campus. The results of this report will be shared with the university and community upon completion. In consultation with the DNRC arborist, due to poor health or because of safety issues, the trees listed below will be removed from six locations on campus during the month of June: A cottonwood tree behind the HHP lab with a split and compromised trunk; Two pine trees between the Bridenstein House and the Family Housing building due to their roots compromising the main sewer line in this area of campus; A damaged ash tree with split limb next to the Bridenstein House fence; A cluster of ash trees at the entrance of the old motor pool parking lot that have grown into the power lines above and cause access issues; An ash tree next to the foundation of the Curry House with limbs over the house and garage; A dead ash tree behind the Curry House. Block Hall Renovation Project Status Update The State of Montana Architecture & Engineering Division have formally issued an RFQ (request for qualifications) for architectural engineering firms to provide engineering schematic design and cost estimations for the Block Hall Renovation Project. It is anticipated that the bid for contractors will then be issued sometime in January/February 2023. Wellness Center Project Status Update The Wellness Center project conceptual drawings and cost estimate will be presented as an informational item at next week’s Board of Regents meeting in Havre to be followed by a request for authorization of funding for the project at a future BOR meeting. The project is planned to be approximately 85% student-fee funded. Heating Plant Upgrade Project Update The old biomass boiler and furnace have been removed from the Heating Plant. The project will now move into the new boiler installation phase during the summer with expected project completion by October. Main Hall Exterior Door Card Swipe System Installation The Main Hall exterior door card swipe system will be installed this summer and be fully functioning by the start of the fall semester. Parking Lot Maintenance The BARC parking lot and the lot south of the SUB will be sealed and restriped in July. Landscaping near Dining Hall Entrances Landscaping and seeding of grass between the UMW Dining Hall entrance and MYCA Mess Hall Entrance will be completed this summer. This area will also include the addition of new picnic tables for students to eat, study, and relax. General Grounds Update Aeration and fertilization of the campus grounds is complete. The campus canal water is available, and the pump system is on. Sprinkler systems have been pressured up and are functioning. Some minor repairs are required. Thank you to the cadets from the Montana Youth Challenge Academy for their help with raking and cleaning up the campus grounds this spring! Summer Work Opportunities Montana Western Facility Services is currently recruiting for summer hires. Positions are available for both grounds maintenance and custodial work. Work period is this summer- June, July, and August, 4 days per week, 32 hours each week. Schedule flexibility is available. Pay scale ranges from $10-$12 per hour. Must be 16 years of age. Must be able to operate typical lawn care equipment such as mowers and weed eaters and handle cleaning machines and supplies. All positions are managed out of the Facility Services department.
