  • FWP Seeks Input On Proposed Brown Trout Fishing Regulation Changes On Some Rivers

Due to public concern regarding brown trout declines in some popular rivers in southwest Montana, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public input on potential fishing regulation changes. Studies conducted by FWP and the U.S. Geologic Survey suggest that flow is a primary limiting factor for many brown trout populations. Short-term trends have shown reduced numbers of small, juvenile brown trout in the Big Hole River, Ruby River, Boulder River (tributary to the Jefferson), Beaverhead River, upper Yellowstone River, Madison River, Shields River and upper Stillwater River (tributary to the Yellowstone). While the department will continue to address flow and habitat enhancement over the long-term, regulations may serve to reduce some population stressors over the short-term. The regulation changes being considered include: Adopt seasonal fishing closure to protect spawning brown trout on some or all of the following rivers or sections of rivers and/or tributaries: Big Hole River, Ruby River, Boulder River (tributary to the Jefferson), Beaverhead River, upper Yellowstone River, Madison River, Shields River, and upper Stillwater River (tributary to the Yellowstone). This would adopt a seasonal fishing closure for all species from September 30 until the third Saturday in May to protect brown trout redds and reduce stress from angling. Catch and release fishing only for brown trout on some or all of the following rivers or sections of rivers and/or tributaries: Big Hole River, Ruby River, Boulder River (tributary to the Jefferson), Beaverhead River, upper Yellowstone River, Madison River, Shields River, and upper Stillwater River (tributary to the Yellowstone). No harvest for brown trout would be allowed year-round. Implement standing hoot-owl restrictions from July 1 – August 15 on some or all of the following rivers or sections of rivers and/or tributaries: Big Hole River, Ruby River, Boulder River (tributary to the Jefferson), Beaverhead River, upper Yellowstone River, Madison River, Shields River, and upper Stillwater River (tributary to the Yellowstone). This regulation would limit fishing pressure to the coolest part of the day (midnight to 2 p.m.) with no fishing allowed from 2 p.m. to midnight. More information and the opportunity to provide comment is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/browntroutscoping . In addition, FWP will conduct three public meetings: June 22 in Dillon at the DNRC Building at 6:30 p.m. June 23 in Butte at the FWP Area Office at 6:30 p.m. June 24 in Bozeman at Region 3 Headquarters at 6:30 p.m. Public comment can also be sent to FWPFishComments@mt.gov or FWP Fish Comments, P.O. Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620-0701. Deadline for public comment is July 11.

  • UMW Student Awarded Sigma Tau Delta Scholarship

Emily Engen, a UMW senior and English major, recently received a Sigma Tau Delta scholarship for the upcoming fall semester. The $1,000 "Regents: High Plains" scholarship was awarded to Engen based on her excellence in academics. The Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society awards its scholarships to members based on the quality of their writing, academics, and community service. Emily Engen is from Fort Benton, Montana, and graduated from Fort Benton High School. She came to Montana Western because of the small class sizes and the block schedule. Engen says the block system allows her to “make the most of my education by diving deeply into each class and engaging myself fully in it.” When asked about her chosen major, Engen said, “I chose to major in English because effective communication is integral to our success as humans, and our words have power. By studying literature, I’ve been able to examine and analyze the words of others, but also build my own voice. There is so much potential for growth and knowledge between the covers of a book, and I believe that through the study of literature we are able to foster empathy, encourage curiosity, and bridge gaps in understanding.” Engen is excited and thankful for this scholarship and says that it will go towards tuition costs for the fall semester. “This scholarship will make such a difference! I am almost finished at Montana Western, and this scholarship will help me move closer to my goal of graduating college debt-free.” According to Engen, Montana Western’s Experience One program was key to her success in academics. “I think UMW’s Experience One program is a remarkable and unique framework that more people need to take advantage of! I have learned so much by being able to devote my energy to one course at a time, and I have had educational experiences within my classes that have shaped my goals and future aspirations.” After graduation, Engen hopes to teach English abroad so she can see more of the world and learn about other cultures. For more information about Experience One and the University of Montana Western, or to schedule a visit, call 877-683-7331 or visit www.umwestern.edu .

  • Hunters Can Soon Register Online For Game Damage Hunt Roster

Hunters interested in participating in game damage hunt opportunities need to register online for the Hunt Roster beginning Tuesday, June 15, through MyFWP . The roster is used by Fish, Wildlife & Parks to quickly respond to landowners who are eligible for game damage assistance in the prevention or reduction of property or crop damage primarily caused by deer, elk and/or antelope. To register, hunters can log into their MyFWP account or click “look up draw results, register for lists” within the menu. Then select a preferred hunting district(s) for potential deer, elk and antelope damage hunts and submit. Hunters are asked to sign up for districts where they know the landscape and can respond quickly to game damage issues typically within 24 to 48 hours. The Hunt Roster sign-up closes July 15, and a randomly generated list will be created from the online registrations and will be posted to MyFWP accounts by July 20. FWP will contact hunters if they are selected for a damage hunt opportunity via phone and/or email, so hunters are asked to ensure they have accurate contact information in their licensing profile. FWP may also utilize other means of hunter selection in lieu of the Hunt Roster, including first-come, first-served advertised opportunities, unsuccessful special license or permit applicant lists or lists of names supplied by landowners depending upon each damage situation. For more details on the FWP game damage assistance program visit: https://fwp.mt.gov/conservation/landowner-programs/game-damage-program
