BVHD Search and Rescue News Submitted by Mel Rice: Public Relations Officer On the night of June 12th, the Beaverhead Search and Rescue was called out at 11:00 PM to assist with the rescue of two men injured in a side by side rollover accident. The incident took place in the Vipond Park area west of Melrose. Three search and rescue hasty teams were dispatched at 11:30 to the victims’ location. At approximately 7:00 PM Beaverhead Sheriff dispatch received a 911 call reporting the incident and the location. Life Flight was notified as well as A1 ambulance out of Butte. The reporting party returned to the accident in his pickup, loaded the two injured individuals in his truck and returned to a location where Life Flight could land. After the helicopter had landed the medical team began assessing injuries of the two men and stabilizing them for transport. By now weather had set in and the bird could not lift off from its location. It was at this point in time that the BVHD SAR unit was paged to assist in getting the injured individuals down out of Vipond Park area to a waiting ambulance. Because of road conditions the ambulance could not get to the victims’ location. Meanwhile a second Life Flight helicopter was summoned to transport the second victim. The second ship was able to get in and land. Both victims were loaded aboard the Life Flight helicopters and transported. One was flown to Missoula where his condition is unknown at this time. The second individual was flown to Butte. Meanwhile BVHD Search and Rescue was in route to the scene to help move the victims to the ambulance. When the S&R incident command was notified of the situation with the helicopters, the hasty teams were turned around and headed back to Dillon. They all arrived back at the building at 2:30 AM. Search and rescue members participating in the event were: Evan Helle, Alan Holt, Adam Norlander, Tommy Goins, Tera Remely, Jason Ericksen, Dr. Mike Clarke, Dusty Crowe, Cody Schnee, Daniel Wyatt, and Mel Rice. This incident took approximately 36 man hours from start to finish. Enjoy your time in the great outdoors but please be safe doing so. Following conversations with officials in Park County, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has closed the Yellowstone River in Park County to all recreational use due to public safety risks caused by extremely high water levels, endangered and failing infrastructure, flooded and impassible access roads, and limited availability of search and rescue resources. All fishing access sites on the Yellowstone River in Park County are also closed from the Yellowstone National Park boundary to Springdale Bridge Fishing Access Site. Most fishing access sites below Springdale Bridge downstream to Captain Clark Fishing Access Site near the Bighorn River confluence are closed to motorized vehicle access. The situation is evolving so please observe all posted closures. Refer to the FWP website for current list of closures. Closures will be strictly enforced. Closures are also in effect for several other sites managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks: All Jefferson River fishing access sites from Cardwell Bridge down to Missouri Headwaters State Park Portions of Missouri Headwaters State Park All Gallatin River fishing access sites All East Gallatin River fishing access sites Many of the fishing access sites on these waters are closed to motorized access: Boulder River Rock Creek (tributary to the Yellowstone River) Stillwater River Clark’s Fork of the Yellowstone River Refer to the FWP website for current list of closures and restrictions. Site closures in other areas of the state may be put in place as flooding occurs. FWP will work to reopen closed areas as soon as conditions allow. Flooding poses significant safety hazards, especially to recreationists. High water levels and related river hazards can appear and evolve without warning. Recreationists can avoid accidents and injury to themselves and others by observing all safety closures and avoiding other areas with high flows.

The Dillon Montana Community Foundation kicked off the first part of Dillon History Days with the June Jubilee. Held at the Depot Park the event includes many family friendly events like a pie eating contest, touch a truck with the local first responders, a car show, and the duck race. A good old fashioned pie eating contest kicked off today's events as those participating dug into some chocolate cream pies donated by Town & Country Foods of Dillon. Smokey the Bear was on hand to judge the contest as well as lend a hand at the duck race. kids got to look at police cars, fire trucks, an ambulance and more as first responders were on hand to give kids and even some curious adults tours of the vehicles they use. A number of vehicles for the 26th annual Auto festival and Cruise were on the lawn. Shined up and ready to impress those walking by was a wide variety of cars, trucks, and other automobiles. This event was sponsored by the White Hat Coalition and Performance Truck & Auto. At 2 P.M. participants lined the banks of Blacktail Creek to cheer on the plastic ducks in hope that their duck would cross the finish line first and bring them home the $200 prize. This event is a great way to bring the community together and it gets you excited for Dillon History Days.

The City of Dillon is sorry to have to announce that the splash pad and general area of Jaycee Park will continue to remain closed because of the various projects until June 30th. The Playground and the Amphitheater are open. Access to the playground is through the opening on Reeder Street. There is a lot of construction work taking place so please be aware of your surroundings and the construction areas. Enjoy your summer! Public Service Announcement The City of Dillon is hoping that everyone is having a great summer. The City would like to remind everyone to help keep Dillon beautiful by taking care of our lawns by mowing, watering and controlling the growth of weeds on our property. The City of Dillon vegetation ordinance asks that property owners keep all weeds, grass and uncared for vegetation from growing to a height in excess of eight inches. The City will soon be sending letters to those who need to give their property a little more care. The City of Dillon would also like to thank the community for following the water restrictions. A vehicle was attempting to turn left from the center turning lane into the Murdoch's parking lot on Thursday morning, when a south bound vehicle struck them. This prompted a response from first responders. Traffic was backed up as they worked to clear the scene. Those involved suffered minor injuries.

The Montana Cutting Horse Association will be holding a competition today and going all through the weekend June 9 thru the 12. The competition will be held at the Montana Center for Horsemanship. Admission to the event is free of charge. Horse cutting is defined as a western-style equestrian competition in which a horse and rider work together before a judge or panel of judges to demonstrate the horse's athleticism and ability to handle cattle. Modern competition utilizes a 2+1⁄2 minute performance, called a "run." Each contestant is assisted by four helpers: two are designated as turnback riders, who help to keep cattle from running off to the back of the arena, the other two are designated as herd holders to keep the cattle bunched together and prevent potential strays from escaping into the work area. If this sounds like an event you would like to check out just go past the hospital on Highway 91 South and follow the signs. More field days to be scheduled this summer and fall An online education course is now available for people looking to get into trapping. The mandatory course is free and can be accessed on Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks website . The education program will include online course work and a mandatory field day where new trappers can learn from experienced trappers about trapping ethics, humane techniques, avoidance of non-target species, fur management, and safety. This course also includes the mandatory wolf trapper certification for anyone looking to also trap wolves. Two field days are already scheduled for July: July 9, Missoula, FWP Office, 3201 Spurgin Road, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 16, Helena, Montana WILD, 2668 Broadwater Avenue, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. More field days will be scheduled and advertised in the coming weeks. During the 2021 legislative session, Senate Bill 60 passed, which requires trapper education for all trappers who have not been a licensed trapper for at least three previous seasons. Trappers who have been licensed trappers for three previous seasons will be asked to list that experience when purchasing a license. All other trappers age 12 and older will need to take the trapper education course before purchasing a license. Wolf trappers who have taken the wolf trapper education course, but haven’t been a licensed trapper for three years, will need to complete the trapper education course to be able to trap wolves in 2022 and beyond. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will be hosting a series of public meetings this summer and fall to gather ideas about local elk management issues and population objectives. Meeting places, times and details are posted on the FWP website . FWP began developing a revised statewide Elk Management Plan in 2020. The first step in the process was to convene a citizen’s group to develop guiding principles for revising the plan. The next step is to gather input on current elk population objectives and other local challenges that could be addressed in the revised Elk Management Plan. “Revising the statewide Elk Management Plan is a critical step for improving elk management to meet both hunter and landowner expectations,” said FWP Wildlife Division Deer/Elk Coordinator Lindsey Parsons. “Public input from the beginning is critical and we’re hoping hunters and landowners alike will provide comment during this scoping period.” A public comment period will be open from June 20 to Oct. 15. Beginning June 20, comments can be submitted online or emailed to FWPWLD@mt.gov . Input gathered during the local process will be used with information obtained at the statewide scale to develop a draft Elk Management Plan. Once the draft Elk Management Plan has been developed and released, there will be additional public comment opportunities offered.

The Dillon Cubs took on the Butte Miners on Sunday, June 5th in a double header game at Ray Lynch Park. The Cubs have struggled this year as a large portion of the team are younger and a little less experienced. The day started off with a ceremony to pay tribute to Gail Whitworth, a former Dillon Cubs manager Gail Whitworth. Whitworth was the cubs manager from 1982 to 2000 and had hundreds of wins with the Cubs. This game all players wore a number 9 jersey in honor of him. They also handed out awards in his name. This years awards and recipients where: The Bring It Home Award winner Connor Vezina Futures Award went to Brandt Nelson, Brandt received a plaque as well as a gift certificate to purchase a bat. Our trainings for the month of May were wildland related. We completed our annual wildland refresher course & the physical standards pack test. We had 4 members complete the crew boss & engine boss classes as well. We were also involved in the It’s Your Choice vehicle accident simulation for the high school students. Please Please Please when you come upon an accident scene or construction zone……SLOW DOWN & MOVE OVER. We recently had a vehicle come through an accident scene at a high rate of speed & run over some of our cones…..SLOW DOWN & MOVE OVER….Everyone’s safety is at risk.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public comment on proposed 2022 Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) grant proposals. Public comments will be accepted through Friday June 24, at 5 p.m. The OHV program received 11 grant requests and proposes to award $418,381. The program receives funding through OHV/motorbike registrations, gas tax and the Summer Motorized Trail Pass revenues. Montana’s Off-Highway Vehicle Program supports projects such as trail maintenance, signs, trail stewards, ethics education, noxious weed control, safety and mapping efforts. Grant awards are allocated by FWP with recommendations from the citizen-based Off-Highway Vehicle Advisory Committee (OHVAC). The public is invited to comment on the funding requests.
