37 BCHS FFA members competed in the Forestry, Livestock Judging, and Soils & Range contests. Over 500 students representing 33 FFA chapters from across Montana were in attendance at this year's event. All of our BCHS teams placed very well and qualified to compete at State FFA Convention in March. Results are as follows: Junior Livestock Evaluation: 6th place overall, 2nd among SW District FFA chapters. Top individuals were Porter Hopman (6th individual), Taylor Yecny, Asher Burch, and Scarlett Garrison. Senior Livestock Evaluation: 3rd place overall, 2nd place among SW District FFA chapters. Top individuals were Gavin Garrison (3rd individual), Katie Johnson, Savanna Freitas, and Clinton Ford. Forestry: 3rd place overall, 1st place among SW District FFA chapters. The University of Montana Western will hold its Homecoming activities, Alumni Weekend, and Athletics Hall of Fame events September 26 - October 1, 2022. This week is an exciting opportunity for alumni, friends, students, faculty, staff, and community members to gather and enjoy all events on campus. The Montana Western rodeo team competed this past weekend in Havre, Mont. at the MSU-Northern Rodeo. Tavy Leno won the women's all-around buckle as she won the goat tying average with a score of 11.8. Trevor Kay won the bareback average with a score of 146 over the weekend. The women's team placed second overall and the men's team finished up in third overall on the weekend. "Going into the rodeo, I knew I just needed to be smooth and have solid runs to make it back to the short go. I just kept it simple and trusted my horses would do their job while I did mine. I ended up third in the long-go of the goat tying and sixth in the team roping with my brother Teegan. In the short-go, we did not have the team roping run we wanted, but I ended up winning the short-go and average in goats and the women's all around for the weekend." freshman Tavy Leno said. The University of Montana Western is proud to participate in College Football Mental Health Week from Sept. 26-Oct. 1 started by the Hilinski's Hope Foundation. The Hilinski's Hope Foundation (H3H) was founded in 2018 by Mark and Kym Hilinski to honor the life of their son Tyler, who died by suicide yet never showed any signs of depression or struggle. Hilinski's Hope Foundation is a non-profit organization formed to promote awareness and education of mental health and wellness for student athletes. The Foundation's mission is to educate, advocate, and eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness, while funding programs that provide student-athletes with the tools and resources that support their mental health and wellness. Two-thirds of student-athletes indicated knowing where to go on campus for mental health concerns, and a majority (56%) reported knowing how to help a teammate experiencing a mental health issue. However, fewer than half (47%) felt they would be comfortable personally seeking support from a mental health provider on campus. Sixty-three percent of student- athletes felt their teammates take mental health concerns of fellow teammates seriously, and a slightly lower percentage (53%) reported that coaches take mental health concerns of their student-athletes seriously. Half of student-athletes believe that mental health is a priority to their athletics department. ( NCAA ) The goal of this week is to raise mental health awareness, destigmatize mental illness, and provide quality resources to student athletes nationwide. Hilinski's Hope and UMW are partnering together as there is a shared belief that mental health is a crucial part of being a successful student-athlete. UMW is joining the mission alongside 100+ universities for this cause. Over the course of the week, UMW Athletics will be putting out social media content leading up to the football game on Saturday. UMW Sports Press Release The Montana Western football team fell to (RV) Montana Tech by a score of 33-24, despite holding the Orediggers to only three points in the second half. Jon Jund led the Bulldogs with 217 passing yards, 101 rushing yards, and a touchdown. The Bulldog defense struggled to perform as they have in weeks past. How It Happened Montana Tech jumped out to a fourteen-point lead early in the first quarter of the game. With 6:52 on the clock, the Bulldogs answered off of a drive that was capped off by a one-yard touchdown run by Reese Neville . Just before the end of the first quarter, the Orediggers picked up a safety and two points off of a bad snap. The score would then remain 7-16 heading into the second quarter. Montana Tech then scored twice before the Bulldogs were able to answer. With 4:25 left until half, the Bulldogs scored on a five-yard touchdown run by Colten McPhee . The Bulldogs headed into the half with some ground to makeup as the score was 14-30. The second half was a defensive battle for both teams as both sides forced a three and out. The Bulldogs put the first points on the board of the half after a Jund touchdown pass to Trey Mounts for 47 yards, bringing the score to 21-30. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs had a 17 play, 76-yard drive that ended in a John Mears field goal that brought the score to 24-30. The Orediggers were able to run out the clock on their next drive which resulted in a field goal that sealed the victory over the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs ultimately fell to Montana Tech by a score of 24-33. Notables This is the first Bulldog loss at home since the 14-17 loss to College of Idaho on Nov. 3, 2018. Jund totaled 217 passing yards, 101 rushing yards, and one passing touchdown. Braden Smith led the Bulldogs with tackles as he totaled 11, 2 of which solo tackles, and 1 tackle for loss. Blake Sentman tallied five receptions and 68 yards. Braden Swank and Kameron Rauser each tacked on 10 tackles for the Bulldog defense. Up Next The Bulldogs will look to bounce back next week in their homecoming game at home against Rocky Mountain College at 1 PM MST.

The Hoofin' it for Hunger 10k and 5k plus one mile fun walk, was held on Saturday September 17th in Dillon. Participants lined up at the starting line next to Depot Park between two John Deer tractors. Runners ran down Reeder Street to Ten Mile Road before turning onto the Wheat property to run in some beautiful scenery. The Hoofin' it for Hunger is hosted by the Montana Farm Bureau's YF&R to benefit the Montana Food Bank Network. The University of Montana Western Fine Arts Gallery is proud to announce the return of Montana native, artist David Rathman. The gallery will host a reception and artist talk on September 30, 2022 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery located in Main Hall. David Rathman, born in 1958 in Choteau, Montana, is known for his delicately rendered paintings of stereotypically male motifs from American history and contemporary culture. He focuses on the testosterone and character of male subjects entangled with the allure of the American West. Rathman portrays a rough, decayed, and barren landscape to further depict the personality of the Wild West. While mainly a painter, Rathman has produced numerous video works, along with a poster for the band The Black Keys. Rathman earned a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1982. He was the recipient of a Bush Foundation Fellowship, two McKnight Foundation Fellowships, and the Minnesota Book Award. Rathman’s work has been placed in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, Stanford University, and the Walker Art Center. David Rathman lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The reception and gallery talk are free for all to attend and will feature light refreshments and music. Rathman’s exhibition will be open for viewing from September 30 to November 18. Barrett Hospital & HealthCare’s Board of Directors announces that Taylor Rose has been named as the new Chief Executive Officer for Barrett Hospital & HealthCare. Beginning September 26, Rose will oversee all strategic, operational and clinical initiatives for the “Top 20” 18-bed critical access hospital. Rose will succeed Scott Manis, who has served as interim CEO following the departure of longtime CEO Ken Westman in January. The Barrett Hospital & HealthCare Board of Directors, together with HealthTech, conducted a nationwide search for a new CEO beginning in January 2022. Through an intensive and in-depth process, the board, along with an internal employee committee, interviewed several candidates from various backgrounds. It was Rose's extensive healthcare background, passion for quality care, and enthusiasm that ultimately made him stand out as the ideal candidate. Board President Patti Mitchell said Rose will be a welcome addition to the Barrett Hospital & HealthCare family: “Taylor will lead this organization with integrity, compassion, adaptability, respect and excellence - all of the values on which this organization was founded. Rose holds a Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of Utah, a Master of Business Administration from David Eccles School of Business in Utah and a Bachelors in Behavioral Science & Health from the University of Utah. Beyond his broad work history, Rose has a real desire to be involved in the community in which he lives and works. Rose currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Big Sky Chamber of Commerce. Previously, Rose was a board member of Covington Washington Chamber of Commerce and co-chair of the Covington Economic Development Council. Planning is well underway for another terrific Beaverhead County HS/JH Rodeo Team annual rodeo this fall.  We are scheduled for September 23rd-25th, 2022 at the Beaverhead County Fairgrounds. We are targeting to have over 150 junior high and high school youth competing in barrel racing, pole bending, tie-down and team roping, steer wrestling, rough stock events and more.  In addition to the rodeo events, there is a shooting sports competition Friday, September 23 rd at 4:00 pm and Saturday, September 24th immediately following our rodeo at the Dillon Trap Club & Rifle Range where junior high and high school students compete in light rifle and trap shooting competitions. Plus, new this year, we are also hosting a breakaway roping jackpot for our junior high and high school athletes Friday, September 23 rd at 7:00 pm at the fairgrounds. We are so appreciative of the support the community provides to the Beaverhead County HS/JH Rodeo Team and would not be able to host one of the largest attended MHSRA events in the state without it. With over 150 contestants and their families from all over Montana expected to attend, it will be a great opportunity to promote your business and be recognized throughout the weekend and afterwards.
