Beaverhead Search and Rescue News Submitted by Mel Rice: Public Relations Officer On the evening of October 10, 2023, the Beaverhead Search and Rescue was paged to search for two 72 year old gentlemen. The page for search managers went out at approximately 9:15 PM. The two elderly men left town the morning of the 10th with the intent of walking off the Black Mountain road and hiking to the summit of Baldy Mountain. After spending the day on the mountain, their energy and stamina had run out. The two men sat down and rested waiting for assistance to show up and help them get off Baldy. Beaverhead Search and Rescue deployed 5 teams to the field to assist in the search for the two assumed lost individuals. The 5 teams were sent to different areas around Black Mountain and Baldy Mountain. Areas that were identified as possible find locations were the Black Mountain road, Dyce Creek, Estler Creek above Kelly Reservoir, Argenta area, and the Baldy Mountain Trailhead. At 10:35 a Deputy Sheriff located the individuals’ truck as well as foot prints heading up the trail in the direction of Baldy Mountain. At 11: 59 PM, search teams met up with the deputy and formulated a plan to search the mountain for the two missing individuals. At approximately 1:48 AM the missing subjects were located by Team 2 made up of Nathan Freeman and Dusty Crowe. They made assessments of the individuals’ health and physical condition. It was determined one of the individuals would walk off the mountain and the second individual would need assistance to get down. Around 2:00 AM Dusty started the decent off the mountain. Nathan built a fire and stayed with the other party member who was experiencing extreme knee and leg pain. Teams 2 and 5, Julia Clark, Adam Norlander, Alex Dunn, and Trent Cottom headed up the trail with the rescue mule and chain saws to cut open the trail to bring the second member off the mountain. All rescue teams and the two overdue gentlemen arrived back in town at approximately 6:30 AM. Other individuals participating in the search were: Team 3 Smittie Smith and James Matthews, Team 4 Clint Rouse and Parke Scott and Jason Erickson who served as incident commander for the search and eventual rescue of the two men. At this time the BVHD SAR unit would like to remind everyone going out to enjoy our beautiful country to be prepared for any and all possible situations. Have proper clothing with you, proper equipment, and be in your best physical condition possible. Weather this time of year is at best very unpredictable. The Butte Veterans’ Home has a Foundation that handles donations for resident Veterans. That foundation is operated by Trustees appointed by each of the 6 counties who sent veterans to deliberate the issue of where to locate the Veterans’ Home. Beaverhead County needs to appoint a new trustee. To be considered you must be a veteran who is willing to attend meetings at the Veterans’ Home in Butte about once a month. Bannack State Park will be switching to winter hours next week. Starting Monday, Oct. 16, the park will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The visitor center will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bannack will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25. Summer hours will resume on April 13. Clark’s Lookout State Park will close for the season on Nov. 1 and will reopen on April 1. About 20 miles west of Dillon, Bannack State Park is a National Historic Landmark and the site of Montana’s first major gold discovery in 1862. UMW Sports Press Release After an impressive weekend, Montana Western linebacker Kameron Rauser earned ERCK Hotels Frontier Conference Player of the Week honors. Rauser made five tackles (four solo) and had two pass breakups as UMW upset No. 11 ranked Montana Tech in Butte. His key play was a 43-yard fumble return for a touchdown – the first for the Bulldogs since 2019 – midway through the first quarter. This is the second weekly honor of Rauser’s career. The Beaverhead Bale Maze and Pumpkin Patch is back for its sixth year of groovy fun. This year's theme is Scooby Doo and you track down the clues to find all six stations, the stations have little bits of history along with a scan bar that gives you some insight into the cartoon Scooby Doo. Once you have stamped all six stations you can go back and solve the riddle to win a prize. The maze is in a different location this year and does not have the corn maze section, but don't let that discourage you from going. They have all the same attractions they have had in the past along with a few new ones as well. The maze is located at 121 Top Rank Ln just a little ways past LS Ready mix on the left hand side as you head north. Admission is $7/person and children 2 and under are free. Hours of operation are Thursdays thru Sunday noon to 8 P.M. They have a pumpkin patch where you can pick a pumpkin for purchase as well as the Braap Shak that serves sodas, water, pulled pork nachos, french fries, and my personal favorite soft pretzels with cheese. The maze of brews will return this year on October 21st with the help of Fetty's Bar and Grill. As Halloween approaches they will set the dates for the maze of scares. If you are looking for a fun way to burn off the kids energy as well as get in your steps head out to the Beaverhead Bale maze and find all six of the stations and solve the clues to get your prize.

UMW Sports Press Release The Montana Western football team (4-1, 2-1) took down the No. 11 ranked Montana Tech Orediggers (4-2, 3-1) this afternoon after the Bulldog offense rattled off a total of 497 yards. The Bulldog defense also held the Orediggers to a single score in the second half. “Really proud of the guys and what they did during the bye week. Our three goals were to improve, improve and improve and that is what they did,” Head Coach Ryan Nourse said. “They went out and they improved on the details that they knew they would need to. This week, they were just focused and workmanlike. It was all straight up let’s do what it takes to win the game.” How it Happened The Orediggers were quick to score in the first quarter, picking up an early 7-0 just over two minutes into the game. Montana Western answered on their opening drive of the game, going 75 yards in four minutes to score a touchdown off of an 11-yard rush from Jake Humphrey. The following Oredigger drive was cut short following a fumble by the MT offense that was picked up by linebacker Kameron Rauser who recorded a scoop and score for a total return of 43 yards. With the Bulldogs up 14-7, the Orediggers worked to tie the game just before the second quarter at 14. UMW remained in control of the ball heading into the second quarter and capped off a 15-play 8-minute drive with a field goal from John Mears that gave UMW the lead once more. Following another successful drive for the Orediggers that gave them the scoring edge, the Bulldogs were able to capitalize just before the half on a pass from Michael Palandri to Eli Nourse for a touchdown. Up 24-21 at the start of the second half, the Bulldog defense held strong throughout the quarter. The Orediggers worked to get down to the Western 25-yard line, but were forced to kick a field goal after a big third down stop by the defense. Bulldog linebacker Braden Smith was able to get a hand on the ball and block the kick from Oredigger kicker Ryan Lowry. The Bulldogs capitalized and scored on the following drive as Palandri rushed it in 13 yards for a touchdown, claiming a 31-21 lead. The Bulldog defense held strong once more forcing a stop that fueled a 9-play scoring drive once more for the offense. Palandri’s hand-off to Nourse was good for a touchdown to bring the score to 38-21. Despite allowing the Orediggers to claim their lone score in the second half, the Bulldogs were able to claim victory by a score of 38-28. Notables • The Bulldog offense was on fire today, racking up 497 total yards and scoring on all but two drives. Palandri threw for a total of 224 yards, a touchdown, and rushed it in for a touchdown. • The Bulldog run game saw a total of 273 rushing yards across four different ball carriers. • Pete Gibson led the ground game with a total of 102 rushing yards with an average of 9.3 yards per carry. Humphrey followed closely with 98 total rushing yards and a touchdown. • Nourse led the Bulldog receiving corps with a total of 81 receiving yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown and seven yards. • Brady Mounts and AJ Ulrichs led the Bulldog defense with eight tackles apiece. • Rauser recorded the first fumble recovery for a touchdown since the UMW’s 2019 season when J.D. Ferris scored on a 24 -yard fumble recovery for a touchdown against Southern Oregon. Up Next The Bulldogs will return to Dillon next week on Oct. 14 and host the Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears for homecoming weekend. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Vigilante Field.

Before Friday night's football game against the Hamilton Broncs the athletes took to the field to receive an award from Northwestern Energy. Students involved in extracurricular activities in Beaverhead County High School have the highest G.P.A. over all other class A schools. The G.P.A. average was 3.605 Senior Jon Peterson of the BCHS Football accepted the award while surrounded by the football team and fellow contributing students. Those contributing to the award are all varsity letter winners in all MHSA sanctioned sports, all music students who received a superior rating at the district music festival, all speech/drama students who participated in the state meet, and all varsity cheerleaders.

Leading up to Friday nights game some polls had Dillon Ranked number 2 and Hamilton ranked in first place while other polls showed the Beavers in first place. Friday night Dillon took to Vigilante Field to prove they are number one. The game got off to Dillon scoring quickly and ending the first quarter 13 to 0. Hamilton would come back in the second quarter to put up 7 points on the board. Hamilton would not see the endzone the rest of the game as the beavers put 12 more points up to end the game with the win and a final score of 35 to 7. Click on image for full size

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks along with the Montana Department of Health and Human Services are advising hunters to have their deer, elk and moose tested for chronic wasting disease (CWD). FWP strongly recommends that hunters receive a negative CWD test result before bringing their deer, elk or moose to a meat processor or donating it to a foodbank. While it is not a requirement, FWP is asking hunters to have a negative CWD test result in hand before bringing their animal to a processor for donation. If the animal tests positive for CWD, FWP will advise the hunter on proper carcass and meat disposal and give instructions on how to request a replacement license. There is no known transmission of CWD to humans. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that hunters harvesting a deer, elk or moose from an area where CWD is known to be present have their animal tested for CWD prior to consuming the meat, and to not consume the meat if the animal tests positive. Roxanne Engellant, from the University of Montana-Western Foundation Board of Directors, will be the guest speaker at the Dillon Rotary meeting on Wednesday, October 11th at noon. Roxanne will share an update on the "Sports and Activities Complex" accomplishments and future time line. The University of Montana Western Foundation, UMW Athletics Department, and several community volunteers will host the 31st Annual Bulldog Bash dinner and auction on October 14, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. in the Keltz Arena on the UMW campus. The day’s events start at 11:00 a.m. with a tailgate celebration at Vigilante Field followed by the Montana Western vs. Rocky Mountain College football game. Doors open for the Bulldog Bash at the Keltz Arena after the football game with dinner being served at 5:30 p.m. An impact video, silent auction, and live auction will take place during the Bash. “This year’s video feature shows the impact that the Bulldog Bash has on all of our student-athletes. The University of Montana Western’s Residence Life team is excited to announce that this year's "Trunk or Treat" event will be held on Wednesday, October 25, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the BARC parking lot on campus. The University of Montana Western would like to invite community members to apply to host a TEDx presentation by October 15. The University of Montana Western is excited to host its first TEDx event on March 23, 2024. This event will feature presentations by faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members in front of a live recorded audience. All presentations will have the opportunity to be featured on the TED global network. Speaker applications and nominations are open for those who have an “idea worth spreading” that will represent the campus and community during the event’s series of TEDx Talks.
