DILLON — A University of Montana Western student from Nevada has been charged with felony negligent homicide in connection with a car crash that killed seven-year-old Enoch Haworth. Hunter James Stoeberl appeared Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Beaverhead County Justice Court, where Judge Randi Braddock set his bond at $25,000, with the option of a $10,000 cash bond. He is currently being held at the Beaverhead County Jail. If convicted, Stoeberl faces up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $50,000. Emergency crews arrived quickly, with paramedics working to stabilize the young patient for transport. The intersection was closed to traffic for several hours as Dillon Police, the Beaverhead County Sheriff’s Office, and the Montana Highway Patrol investigated the scene. At 9 p.m., Dillon Elementary School Superintendent Randy Shipman released a statement on Facebook confirming the tragic loss of a Parkview Elementary School student. “It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I share the tragic news of the passing of one of our beloved students at Parkview Elementary School,” Shipman wrote. “Our entire school community is mourning this unimaginable loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.” Shipman noted that grief counselors and support staff will be available at the school to help students and staff process the tragedy. He asked the community to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve. Authorities confirmed that the crash remains under active investigation. Law enforcement has asked that anyone with information contact the Dillon Police Department. The bicyclist was a young juvenile who was later pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital. The parents of the child have been notified prior to this release but due to this being an active investigation we will not be releasing any of the names involved at this point. DILLON, Mont. (Sept. 22, 2025)  – Nearly 400 community members gathered Monday evening in Jaycee Park to honor the life of Charlie Kirk, who was killed earlier this month during a debate event at Utah Valley University. The vigil opened with a prayer, followed by reflections from students involved in the Turning Point USA chapter in Dillon, as well as members of Chi Alpha and Waypoint Church. Speakers shared stories of how Charlie had influenced their lives, with some recalling personal encounters. After each speech, attendees observed a moment of silence. A single candle was lit in Charlie’s memory, and from that flame nearly 400 others were kindled, symbolizing both his life and the lives of others lost to violence in recent weeks. The gathering remained peaceful throughout. Law enforcement was present but not called upon to intervene. Volunteers offered cocoa, tea, and cookies to help attendees stay warm and comfortable as they reflected together.

WISDOM, Mont. (Sept. 21, 2025)  – A 44-year-old Wisdom man was found deceased Sunday morning after authorities located his vehicle overturned in the water along Lower North Fork Road outside of Wisdom, according to the Beaverhead County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded around 10:37 a.m. after receiving a report of a vehicle upside down in the water with only its tires visible. When a deputy arrived on scene, it appeared the driver’s side door had been forced open, suggesting someone may have attempted to escape. The search initially focused on locating the vehicle’s registered owner at his home and workplace, but when he was not found, attention returned to the submerged vehicle. Sheriff Wendt entered the water with chest waders, secured by a rope, and was able to pry open the passenger door. Inside, he discovered the body of the missing man. Investigators determined the man had been seen the previous night and had likely been in the vehicle overnight. His identity has not yet been released, pending notification of out-of-state family members. Update 09/22 5:20 pm driver of the vehicle has been identified as 44 year old Trevor Lee Nelson of Wisdom MT. The Montana Highway Patrol is leading the crash investigation. Authorities said alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the incident.

Football September 22, 2025 Claire Gay HELENA, Mont. –  Montana Western football player Maclain Burckley was named Erck Hotels/ Frontier Conference Football Special Teams Player of the week after a solid performance at Rocky Mountain Sept. 20 This marks the first Player of the Week honor of his career. "Maclain has become a huge part of the success of our team early in his career," Head Coach Ryan Nourse said. "He works tirelessly at being his best and the positive results are speaking for themselves." Burckley had a perfect day kicking against Rocky, going 3-of-3 on PAT kicks and 2-of-2 in field goals. He drilled a season-best 47-yard attempt just before halftime to put Bulldogs up 13-7. He also recorded four punts for 45.0 yards per punt, including a 51-yard effort. All of his four punts landed inside the opponent's 20-yard line His 47-yard field goal is the longest by any kicker in the Frontier Conference this season. Burckley's three made field goals on the year have all been over 30 yards. The redshirt-freshman has drained all 13 PAT attempts this season and is 3-of-4 on field goal attempts. He has tallied 11 punts for 466 yards (42.36 yards per punt). His 16 kickoffs have gone for 1,035 yards (64.7 yards per kick). The Montana Youth Challenge Academy, in partnership with the Montana National Guard 1-189th (General Support Aviation Battalion) and the University of Montana Western, will be hosting an educator airlift event on Wednesday, October 8, 2025. This event provides Montana high school administrators, counselors, and staff an opportunity to interact with current cadets and learn more about the Challenge Model of youth development and UMW’s Experience One program. Attendees will be flying in from locations across the state including the cities of: Kalispell, Missoula, Great Falls, Helena, Billings, and Bozeman. The purpose of this event is to create statewide partnerships so that MYCA can better support Montana’s youth. As part of the day’s activities, military helicopters are scheduled to land around noon on the south end of campus in the tailgating/parking area. This will be an exciting opportunity to see aircraft land on campus, but it also requires some important safety measures: The south tailgating/parking lot and the adjacent parking lot near the BARC will be closed during the event. These areas must remain clear to provide safe landing space and to account for rotor wash from the helicopters as they land and take off throughout the afternoon. BILLINGS, Mont.  – Behind a balanced offensive attack and strong second-half adjustments, the Montana Western Bulldogs claimed a 35-21 road victory over Rocky Mountain on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs (2-1) piled up 498 yards of total offense, including 350 through the air, and moved the chains 30 times while converting nine critical third- and fourth-down plays. Offensive Leaders Quarterback Michael Palandri  fueled the Bulldogs’ charge, throwing for 350 yards and three touchdowns while adding 50 rushing yards and a rushing score. Palandri also punched in a two-point conversion that gave Western a 28-14 cushion late in the third quarter. Wideout Eli Nourse  proved nearly unstoppable, hauling in 12 receptions for 148 yards and a touchdown. Seth Shook  and Jakob Humphrey  each added touchdown catches, with Humphrey also leading the ground game at 74 rushing yards on 6.2 yards per carry. Special teams provided a boost as well. Kicker Maclain Burckley  went 3-for-3 on extra points and drilled both field goal attempts, including a season-long 47-yarder just before halftime. Defensive Highlights Defensively, Keegan Muffich  led the way with eight tackles, three of them solo stops. Romeo Simpson , Brady Mounts , Jace Fitzgerald , Tyler Walker , and Taylor Schoen  each chipped in four tackles. Walker tallied 1.5 tackles for loss, while Schoen recorded the Bulldogs’ lone sack, a five-yard drop of the Rocky quarterback. Mounts iced the win with a key interception in the fourth quarter. Coach’s Take “Rocky came to play and did some things on defense that were really tough to deal with,” head coach Ryan Nourse  said. “They have a talented wide receiver group that really tested our secondary. S.D. –  The Montana Western volleyball team (6-7, 4-2 FC) fell to (RV) Dakota State (8-3, 4-2 FC) Friday evening in Madison, S.D. MATCH SUMMARY The hosts came out firing in set one, going on a 9-2 run to take the lead early. They kept up the pressure and took the first 25-12. The Bulldogs fought hard in the second frame, keeping it close throughout the set, but the Trojans pulled away at the end, taking the 25-21 win to go up 2-0. In the third, Dakota State again opened up a seven-point lead early on, and despite a valiant effort from Western, DSU completed the sweep with a 25-17 set win. Claire Gay UMW Sports MISSOULA, Mont. – Montana Western's Brant and Olivia Heiner were the top Bulldog finishers at the Montana Invite Friday evening. Brant ran a 27:58.6 to finish 47th out of 77 competitors in the men's 8k. Olivia clocked a 21:10.3 to take 41st out of 72 runners in the women's 5k. The other finishers on the men's side included Harrison Silverio (55th, 29:11.8), Wyatt Yeager (59th, 30:02.5), Cael Thilmony (60th, 30:07.1), Kreg Butler (61st, 30:19.1), Tristan Von Bargen (63rd, 30:59.0), Noah Rovente (67th, 31:29.2), and Brody Henry (70th, 32:39.9) On the women's side, Justene Santi (57th, 22:53.5), Ashley Murnion (67th, 25:57.6), Kylee Wyatt (70th, 29:13.6), and Madison Faulkner (71st, 30:08.6) rounded out the Bulldog finishers. The University of Montana Western Provost Search Committee is pleased to announce that four finalists will be visiting the UMW campus from September 23 – October 2, 2025. The four finalists include Charles Tilburg, Justin McBrayer, David Biek, and Bruce Mackh. Each finalist will be visiting UMW to meet with various departments and attend open forums with Montana Western students, faculty, and staff. Dr. Charles Tilburg Dr. Charles Tilburg currently serves as the Director of the School of Marine and Environmental Programs and the Doherty Chair of Marine Sciences Research at the University of New England, located on the coast of Maine. With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, he is recognized for his strategic leadership, collaborative approach, and commitment to student and faculty success. Under his direction, the School has become his university’s largest academic unit, with enrollment growth exceeding 60%, innovative curricular reforms, and more than $5.6 million raised in philanthropic support. Dr. Tilburg’s career includes extensive experience in academic administration, interdisciplinary research, and external engagement. He has held roles as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Director of the Arthur P. Girard Marine Science Center. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles and delivered more than 100 presentations at national and international conferences. His research portfolio includes more than $5 million in external funding, supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). His work has involved collaboration with state and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private industry on initiatives related to coastal resilience, workforce development, and applied science. Dr. Tilburg has led personnel processes for faculty and staff, mentored early-career professionals, and facilitated cross-functional teams in academic planning and institutional initiatives. He has experience navigating complex challenges, including accreditation, budget management, and program development. His leadership approach emphasizes shared goals, transparent communication, and professional development across all levels of the institution. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Tilburg enjoys skiing, rock climbing, mountain biking, and hiking – usually accompanied by his two Siberian huskies. He currently lives in Maine with his wife and two children. David Biek David Biek is the founding Dean of the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences at Middle Georgia State University. David earned his doctorate in developmental psychology at Cornell University and completed his master’s work at Columbia.  His scholarly and applied work is focused on understanding the informal factors behind academic achievement. David has served as co-chair for MaconAIM, a human service collaborative, as a board member for Carlyle Place – Atrium/Navicent Health in Macon, and has organized a community-wide Thrive Summit in the middle Georgia region.  He also serves on the statewide Executive Council for AARP Georgia. David lives in Forsyth, GA with his wife and three children. Dr. Justin McBrayer Dr. Justin McBrayer is Professor of Philosophy and former Associate Dean, Provost’s Fellow, and member of the Board of Trustees at Fort Lewis College, a regional comprehensive college in Durango, Colorado. He holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Montana and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. Dr. McBrayer’s academic interests span a wide range of topics, from social epistemology to ethics, and he is a nationally recognized expert on the nature, origins, and harms of fake news. He is a frequent contributor to public discourse on philosophical issues and a prominent advocate for open inquiry and free speech in higher education. He is a two-time Fulbright professor, once at the University of Innsbruck, Austria and a second appointment at the University of Genoa, Italy. Dr. McBrayer and his family lived on the Fort Lewis campus for five years as faculty-in-residence, and he has taken students on study abroad courses to four different countries. As a teacher, Dr. McBrayer has offered a wide array of courses from ethics to logic to philosophy of religion. His goal is to help students to think philosophically about the important questions in their lives, with a focus on learning how to interpret others charitably and evaluate arguments rigorously. As an administrator, Dr. McBrayer’s work is centered on student success. Notable wins include converting temporary faculty lines to permanent ones, developing outdoor classrooms to keep campus open for in-person learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, building a Washington, DC internship program, and securing permanent space for a Grub Hub that serves students facing food-insecurity. Dr. McBrayer was the Executive Director of his professional association, the Society of Christian Philosophers where he increased membership, raised over $400k for an endowment, and worked to convert the society’s scholarly journal from a subscription-based, hardcopy service to open-access and online, expanding global readership tenfold. Bruce M. Mackh, Ph.D Bruce M. Mackh, Ph.D., is a seasoned higher education leader whose career spans more than a decade of academic and student affairs leadership at institutions ranging from regional comprehensives to R1 research universities. Most recently, he has served as Vice Provost for Assessment and Chief Accreditation Officer at Wright State University, where he led academic planning, general education, program prioritization, institutional assessment, and accreditation compliance. His work included designing new degree programs, implementing multi-term registration and block scheduling to improve first-year persistence, and aligning program offerings with workforce needs and strategic priorities. Prior to his service at Wright State, Dr. Mackh was the Associate Vice President of Teaching and Learning at Chadron State College, where he oversaw student support services, including the library, writing center, disability services, tutoring, and career services, while revitalizing the Teaching and Learning Center and improving retention. He also served as Department Head at Valdosta State University, leading initiatives in curriculum redesign, faculty development, and enrollment growth. His earlier roles include Dean of Faculty at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design and directing two graduate programs at Michigan State University. After beginning his higher education journey as a first-generation, adult commuter student, Dr. Mackh is passionate about expanding access and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed. His leadership commitments are guided by his dedication to experiential learning, faculty empowerment, and student-centered decision-making. He holds a Ph.D. in Critical Studies from Texas Tech University, an MFA from Tulane University, a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and he is completing an Ed.D. in Higher Education and Student Affairs at St. Cloud State University.

HAMILTON– Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks game wardens are seeking information on two spike elk shot and left to waste on private land near Likes Ranch Block Management Area south of Hamilton. The two elk were found on Monday, Sept. 8 and are believed to have been shot on the evening of Friday, Sept. 5 around 7:30 p.m. Both were unlawfully killed, and all meat was left to waste. FWP game wardens say that wildlife crimes like this one are often solved because of leads from the public and encourage anyone with information to make a report. Anyone with possible tips on this incident is encouraged to contact Bitterroot area game warden Taylor Gagnon at 406-552-9335.
