  • Highway 43 Closure From 07/12 Thru 07/16 For Bridge Replacement

The Montana Department of Transportation is making roadway and bridge improvements as part of four construction projects on Highway 43 between the Chief Joseph Pass and Wise River. Construction is anticipated to begin in April and be completed in the fall 2021. About The Projects Trail Creek Bridges Improvements The Trail Creek Bridges Project is replacing two bridges over Trail Creek near the May Creek Campground and a pipe culvert at Canyon Creek. Construction is anticipated to begin in April 2021 and be completed in the Fall 2021. The Trail Creek bridges were built in 1961and have neared the end of their lifetime and need to be replaced. Although they are still safe for travel, rehabilitation and maintenance is no longer practical due to deterioration. The culvert at Canyon Creek is too small, causing heavy spring runoff to overflow onto the highway. Improvements include: Bridges Removing and replacing the existing bridges with a slightly wider design. Removing the piers from the stream to allow more water to flow through and restore Trail Creek to a more natural flow. Upgrading the bridge railings. Resurfacing the roadway with new pavement on each end of the bridges. Upgrading the approach railings on each end of the bridges. Trail Creek Bridge Wisdom West Improvements The Wisdom West Project is improving Highway 43 between the Bitterroot Big Hole Road and Wisdom. Construction is anticipated to begin in April 2021 and be completed in the Fall 2021. Improvements include: Resurfacing 19 miles of pavement and upgrading guardrails. Repairing the bridge deck and upgrading the bridge railing over the Big Hole River Bridge west of Wisdom. Repairing deteriorated pavement on both ends of the Ruby Creek Bridge near the Big Hole National Battlefield. Upgrading pullout surfaces and improving drainage. Chip sealing the pavement surface. Adding new pavement markings (painting/striping) and signs. Wisdom North Improvements The Wisdom North Project is improving Highway 43 between Wisdom and the Big Hole River Bridge (County Line Bridge). Construction is anticipated to begin in June 2021 and be completed in the Fall 2021. Improvements include: Resurfacing 16 miles of asphalt pavement. Chip sealing the pavement surface. Adding centerline rumble strips, new pavement markings (painting/striping) and signs. Wise River Northwest Improvements The Wise River Northwest Project is preserving and extending the life of Highway 43 between the Sportsman Campground and Wise River. Construction is anticipated to begin in June 2021 and be completed in the Fall 2021. Improvements include: Chip sealing approximately 14 miles of pavement. Upgrading guardrails. Adding new pavement markings (painting/striping).

  • FWP Keeps Traps In Ovando Area, More Details Released

After two days of searching by helicopter and on the ground, the grizzly bear that killed a woman Tuesday morning has not been found. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks bear specialists and wardens are continuing to monitor culvert traps set in the area. The search even included the use of infrared technology from Two Bear Air Rescue out of Kalispell, but efforts to find the bear are now focusing on traps near Ovando. Details surrounding the circumstances of the attack indicate the bear entered town Monday morning and came to an area near the post office at about 3 a.m., where the victim was sleeping in a tent. Another couple in her party were sleeping in a tent nearby. The bear initially woke the campers but then ran away. The three campers removed food from their tents, secured it, and went back to bed. The bear was captured by a video camera at a business less than a block away at about 3:15 a.m. At about 3:30 a.m. the two people in the tent adjacent to the victim were awakened by sounds of the attack. They exited the tent and sprayed the bear with bear spray. It has not been seen since. The bear pulled the victim from the tent during the fatal attack. At some point during the night the bear also got into a chicken coop in town, killing and eating several chickens. While the initial search for the bear was unsuccessful, FWP wardens and bear specialists will continue to monitor the area closely. “At this point, our best chance for catching this bear will be culvert traps set in the area near the chicken coop where the bear killed and ate several chickens,” said Randy Arnold, FWP regional supervisor in Missoula. FWP bear experts believe the bear was an approximately 400-pound male, judging by behavior and footprints. DNA from the bear was collected at the scene of the attack and will be analyzed. Should a bear be caught in a trap, DNA can quickly be compared to the DNA already collected to determine if it is the same animal. Anyone who spots a grizzly bear near Ovando should call the FWP Missoula office at 542-5500.

  • Gov. Gianforte Secures Federal Drought Disaster Aid for 10 More Montana Counties

After declaring a statewide drought emergency last week and following his request to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Governor Greg Gianforte today announced USDA has designated ten counties as natural disaster counties. “I appreciate Secretary Vilsack responding to my request and designating additional Montana counties as natural disaster areas, but there’s more USDA needs to do now to help our ag producers,” the governor said. “With every region of the state facing severe to extreme drought conditions, I continue to call on USDA to declare the entire state a drought disaster area.” “Our ag producers are experiencing devastating impacts to forage and stock water availability due to drought conditions,” Gianforte continued. “They need relief as quickly as possible and cannot afford unnecessary delays from the federal government.” Hill and Wheatland counties have been designated as primary disaster areas, with eight contiguous counties also eligible for assistance from the Farm Service Agency (FSA), including Blaine, Chouteau, Fergus, Golden Valley, Judith Basin, Liberty, Meagher, and Sweet Grass counties. To date, USDA has designated 26 of Montana’s 56 counties as primary or contiguous counties for disaster designation areas. On July 1, Gov. Gianforte issued an executive order declaring a statewide drought emergency in Montana. As of June 22, approximately 91 percent of Montana faced abnormally dry to extreme conditions. At the same time last year, approximately 52 percent of the state faced similar conditions. The governor’s letter calling on USDA Secretary Vilsack to identify all counties in Montana as primary natural disaster areas may be found here . Secretary Vilsack’s response may be found here .

  • FWP Adds Features To New Online Hunt Planner Map

Staff at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks have added new features to FWP’s online Hunt Planner map, a free interactive mapping website for researching hunting opportunities in the state. These new features will become available starting July 7. The new Hunt Planner, which became available to the public last year, uses current technology to provide hunters with a better map experience. It now has all the tools and data layers of the old Hunt Planner and more, with better performance and compatibility with mobile devices. In a time when most traffic to FWP’s website comes from mobile devices, FWP staff created the new Hunt Planner to replace the old Hunt Planner, which was built more than 10 years ago with technology that isn’t mobile friendly. Due to this, the old hunt planner will be discontinued on July 7. Updates to the new Hunt Planner include: A cleaner user interface A harvest opportunity tool, rather than individual data layers, to display opportunities for species, hunter type and season options A lookup tool to view where your hunting license or permit is valid A feature to find your location on the map Improved help tools and links to other FWP resources Other features of the Hunt Planner include: Customizable map layers, including harvest opportunities for huntable species, land ownership, Block Management and other options Links to hunting regulations Export and print a geo-referenced PDF map Create a GPX file to upload to your GPS device Drawing tools Coordinates of cursor location The Hunt Planner can be found at fwp.mt.gov/gis/maps/huntPlanner , and updated tools and functionality will be available starting July 7. Several resources are available in the Hunt Planner map to help new users become familiar with it, including video tutorials and answers to frequently asked questions. FWP is the official source of hunting information in Montana. That information can change quickly, and the Hunt Planner contains the most current updates on hunting regulations, hunting district boundaries, restricted areas, access program updates and other information critical to planning your hunt. Third-party mapping applications, while helpful in many aspects, may not provide the most current hunting information.

  • Gov. Gianforte Calls on USDA to Declare Montana a Drought Disaster Area

With every region of Montana facing severe to extreme drought conditions, Governor Greg Gianforte today called on U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to identify all counties in Montana as primary natural disaster areas. “As we continue to see record-breaking temperatures from Libby to Glendive, it is imperative that the U.S. Department of Agriculture aid Montana communities in accessing critical resources, such as the Livestock Forage Program, Emergency Conservation Program, and Emergency Livestock Assistance Program, to respond to continued severe drought conditions on the ground,” the governor wrote in a letter to Secretary Vilsack. The governor provided the current outlook, advising Vilsack that approximately 91 percent of Montana faces abnormally dry to extreme conditions as of June 22. At this time last year, approximately 52 percent of the state faced similar conditions. Gov. Gianforte also noted, despite current conditions and forecasts, USDA has identified only 16 of Montana’s 56 counties as primary natural disaster areas. Stressing the devastating impact of drought conditions on Montana agricultural producers, Gov. Gianforte continued, “Relief is needed as swiftly as possible, particularly for our agricultural producers, who are seeing impacts to forage and stock water availability due to drought conditions.” With many Montana ranchers in need of forage, the governor also called on Vilsack to allow for emergency haying and grazing on all of Montana’s participating Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acreage. “Because we expect record-breaking heat and associated drought, it is imperative that Montana can take advantage of viable acres of CRP land,” the governor wrote. In response to drought conditions, Gov. Gianforte on Thursday morning declared a statewide drought emergency in Montana. Gov. Gianforte’s letter urging USDA Secretary Vilsack to identify all counties in Montana as primary natural disaster areas can be viewed here .
