  • Sweeney Breaks Single-Game Scoring Record And Surpasses 1,000 Career Points in Win Over Battlin’ Bears

Lindsey Branch, UMW Sports Information photo credit Terri Haverfield BILLINGS, Mont. –  The Montana Western women's basketball team (16-12, 8-7) closed out the regular season this afternoon with a road win over the Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears (15-12, 4-11) by a final score of 86-73. Jordan Sweeney broke her previous career-high in a game and the Montana Western single-game scoring record after she scored 43 points in the game. The previous record of 40 points was set by Brianna King back in the 2017-18 season against Menlo College.  "Jordan was an unstoppable force for us today. But it was a full team effort win. Our ladies did a great job moving the ball and found advantages" Head Coach Britt Cooper said. With her total, she breaks 1,000 career points in the win, a total that she surpasses in just her second year with the Bulldogs. She joins teammate Shainy Mack this season who previously surpassed 1,000 career points earlier this year. How it Happened A jumper for Sweeney got the contest started before Rocky would jump out to a 9-6 lead in the first four minutes of the ball game. Maddy Moy found the bucket on three straight attempts and got Western back out in front to push them out to a 17-13 lead heading into the second quarter. Sweeney continued to lead the Bulldogs, rattling off five three-pointers in the second quarter and putting the Bulldogs out to a 44-32 lead at the half. It was Sweeney again who kept the Bulldogs out in front, hitting 6-6 from the free throw line and creating enough space to take a 66-54 lead into the fourth. Payton Hagy's three-pointer stretched the UMW lead out to 13 points with 8:14 remaining in the game. Despite the surge, Rocky found success behind a quick 5-0 run and cut the lead back to eight. Sweeney hit her sixth three of the contest and Keke Davis followed with a layup, giving Western another 13-point lead into the final four minutes of the ball game. The Battlin' Bears gave it their best shot, but were unable to grab enough momentum to swing the score in their favor. Western took the win by a final score of 86-73. Notables The Bulldogs finish off the regular conference slate with an overall record of 16-12 and a conference record of 8-7. Today's win is the 100th victory over the Battlin' Bears since 1971 and the Bulldogs' seventh straight victory over RMC. Sweeney led all scorers, putting up a whopping 43 points on a 14-22 shooting performance and a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe. She also hit seven threes in the game, tying the single game conference three-point record that teammate Joelnell Momberg set previously this year. Moy followed up with 11 points and a team high seven rebounds. Mack added 11 points, five rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Up Next Montana Western finishes the regular season with a 16-12 record and enters the Frontier Conference tournament as the number three seed following an 8-7 conference record. They will now take on Montana Tech on Feb. 29 at 7pm. With a win, the Bulldogs will return to the court on March 1. All tournament games will be held at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls, Mont. "Really proud of our guys for getting a win on the road. We have to build and learn from this going into the tournament" Head Coach Patrick Jensen said. Four Bulldogs scored in double-digits in today's game, with Jalyn Stepney leading the way with 24 points. How it Happened Rocky Mountain was the first to take an early edge in the duel, pushing out to a 10-6 lead early in the game. A layup from Quincy Taylor and a jumper from Stepney rounded out the score and kept the Bulldogs tight with RMC. With just over ten minutes to play in the first half, Michael Haverfield hit a three-pointer to give Western their largest lead thus far at 16-12. Rocky fought back and the two teams continued to battle for position down to the final three minutes of the half. Riding a 7-0 scoring run that featured a three from Taylor and a pair of buckets from Stepney, the Bulldogs were able to grab a 33-29 lead heading into the half. Western wasted little time from the start of the second half and rode a 10-0 scoring run to a 14-point lead. Rocky Mountain kept working to cut into the Bulldog lead, bringing the score back to as much as a five-point deficit. In spite of the comeback, Haverfield hit back-to-back threes with under three minutes on the clock for the Bulldogs to keep the Bulldog men out by an arm's reach through the remainder of the game. UMW took the win by a final score of 73-64. Notables The Bulldogs finish off the regular conference slate with an overall record of 6-9 heading into the Frontier Conference tournament. • Bulldogs Shine On Senior Night, Down Orediggers 73-63

Lindsey Branch, UMW Sports Information photo credit Terri Haverfield DILLON, Mont. –  The Montana Western women's basketball team (15-12, 7-7) defeated the Montana Tech Orediggers (12-15, 3-11) by a final score of 73-63. UMW sent the senior class off in style as they rattled off an impressive 15 team three-pointers in their final home game of the season, surpassing their previous season high of 14 threes in a game. How it Happened The Bulldogs got off on the right foot in the matchup, finding early success following triples from Jordan Sweeney and Joelnell Momberg . Western's powerful start hit a road block after Montana Tech ran behind a 12-0 run to take a 17-12 lead into the second quarter. Despite the lull in scoring, the Bulldogs turned the tides in the second quarter after Sweeney drained another three-pointer and UMW ran on to take a 34-30 lead into the half. Sweeney continued to lead the charge in the third quarter. She put up 13 points in the 27-16 scoring advantage and a 9-13 shooting performance from the field in the quarter. Up 61-46 heading into the final frame, Shainy Mack drained her fifth three of the night and pushed Western out by 15 points. Despite being outscored 17-12 in the final quarter of the game, the Bulldogs had enough of an edge from 15 total threes to ride on to a ten-point win at 73-63. • Bulldogs Battle With No. 10 Montana Tech, Fall 76-62

Lindsey Branch, UMW Sports Information photo credit Terri Haverfield DILLON, Mont. –  The Montana Western men's basketball team (12-15, 5-9) put up a fight in their final home matchup of the season with the no. 10 ranked Montana Tech (23-4, 13-1) by a final score of 76-62. Western struggled from the field on the night, hitting just 33.8 percent from the field and 3-10 from the three-point line. How it Happened Both teams had a rough start to the night, with neither team hitting double-digits in the first nine minutes of the game. Montana Tech broke the cold snap with a layup from Bridger Deden to take a 10-9 lead over the Bulldogs. Michael Haverfield drained a three-pointer with 8:06 left in the half to cut the Tech lead to two and Western kept just behind the Orediggers for the next five minutes. With under three minutes to play in the first, Jalyn Stepney grabbed a steal and found himself primed for a wide-open dunk and brought the game back within five points. Despite the momentum grab, the Orediggers went on to take a 35-25 lead at the half. Abi Adedo knocked down a jumper and Jacksen Burckley hit a three of his own to combine for five from the start of the second half. They would cut the MT lead to seven. Despite the narrow deficit, the Orediggers kept the pressure on and stretched their lead to as much as __ down the stretch.
