- Three Black Bears Euthanized After Repeated Conflicts In Missoula Neighborhoods
MISSOULA – Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks trapped and euthanized three black bears today in Missoula that were responsible for repeated conflicts in Missoula neighborhoods. The conflicts began last fall and picked up again first thing this spring. FWP wildlife specialists reported that the female and two subadults began getting into garbage, bird feeders, garages, and other attractants last fall in Missoula’s Rattlesnake neighborhood, as well as in some temporary camps and tents along the Clark Fork River in Missoula. FWP and local residents worked to secure attractants last fall, but even after the winter, the family group of bears remained in neighborhoods and around homes and local businesses in the middle of town, exhibiting bold behavior that indicates they were conditioned to these food sources. Once bears become conditioned to garbage and other attractants, it is a habit that is very hard to break and causes human safety concerns. Unfortunately, when bears start showing extreme food conditioned behavior, the only way to prevent further conflict is through euthanization. Preventing bears from becoming food conditioned in the first place is always best, and FWP helps communities avoid bear conflicts by working with local neighborhoods and residents to secure attractants that can lure bears in. FWP recommends that in addition to keeping garbage in bear-resistant garbage cans or in a secure building until the morning of trash collection, remove bird feeders when bears are out; consider using electric fencing around chickens, garden areas and compost piles; and move attractants such as pet food, barbecue grills and ripe fruit indoors or into a secure building. Bear-resistant garbage containers or enclosures are required within the newly expanded Missoula Bear Buffer Zone. The new rules, adopted last fall, go into effect in phases, and are an important part of conflict prevention, although it will take time for some bears to adjust their habits. After years of accessing uncontained garbage, certain bears will continue to persistently attempt to get into secured garbage. Phase 1 of the expanded Missoula Bear Buffer Zone applies to Missoula’s Rattlesnake and Grant Creek areas and began on April 30. For information on the Bear Buffer Zone and the Missoula Garbage Ordinance see the Missoula County page on bears and wildlife or its Bear Smart Missoula page. For more information on living, working, and recreating in Montana’s bear country, visit the FWP Bear Aware page at fwp.mt.gov/conservation/wildlife-management/bear/be-bear-aware .

- Partial Spring Fish Population Estimates Completed For Big Hole River
WISE RIVER – Fisheries staff with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks are conducting annual fish population estimates in the Big Hole River. Estimates from two of the four sampling areas are completed, showing several increases in trout numbers from historic lows last year. In the Melrose section, which is immediately downstream of Salmon Fly Fishing Access Site, biologists found an estimated 192 rainbow trout per mile and 506 brown trout per mile. These figures are increases from 2023 estimates, which were 161 rainbow trout and 324 brown trout. Both estimates for 2024 still remain well below the long-term averages, which are 488 rainbow trout and 908 brown trout per mile. In the Hogback section, which runs from Glen Fishing Access Site to Tony Schoonen Fishing Access Site, biologists found an estimated 263 rainbow trout per mile and 722 brown trout per mile. Rainbow trout numbers decreased slightly from 2023’s estimate of 288 fish. Brown trout estimates, however, more than doubled from last year’s estimate of 289 fish. The long-term averages for this section are 473 rainbow trout per mile and 920 brown trout per mile. Jim Olsen, FWP’s fisheries biologist for the Big Hole River, says good water levels in 2023 likely helped improve the survival of juvenile trout because most of the population increase observed this year was in 2-year-old fish. “While trout populations are still well below the long-term average, this year’s estimates so far are encouraging,” Olsen said. Population estimates are still pending for the Jerry Creek and Pennington sections, which respectively include the upper and lower reaches of the Big Hole River. These results and updates from other waterbodies in the upper Missouri River Basin will be published as they become available. FWP and Montana State University embarked on a new cooperative research effort when annual sampling found fish numbers to be at or near historic lows in sections of the Big Hole, Beaverhead and Ruby rivers last year. This partnership includes hiring three PhD students and additional staff to study fish mortality, recruitment and health. This spring, FWP staff tagged fish in the three rivers, as well as the lower Madison River. As anglers report each tagged fish they catch, they’re helping researchers identify individual fish and monitor their health, survival, movement and other indicators over time. Anglers who submit reports could also be eligible for rewards. To learn more about the research effort and how to report a tagged fish, click here .

- Injured Snowmobiler Prompts Search & Rescue Call, Along With Life Flight
Beaverhead Search and Rescue News Submitted by: Mel Rice Public Relations On Saturday, May 4, the Beaverhead Search and Rescue received a page to retrieve a snowmobiler on the west side of the Big Hole Valley. At approximately 5:15 in the afternoon, a call came in from the Salmon Sheriff’s office to the Dillon Sheriff explaining they had received a 911 call from an individual who was sledding on the west side of the Big Hole. After attaining information about the accident Salmon called for life flight out of Idaho Falls, but when they realized the incident was on the Montana side of the boarder they referred everything to Dillon Sheriff. Salmon informed Dillon there had been a snow machine accident on a steep slope and they had an injured male with a compound fracture of one of his femurs. Dillon Sheriff in turn canceled Idaho Falls Life Flight and got Butte Life Flight involved. Life Flight lifted off the ground almost immediately and headed to the incident. Meanwhile Beaverhead Search and Rescue had been paged and members were preparing to head to the victim’s location, which was northwest of Homer Young Peak and above Little Lake Cr Lake. By the time S&R was ready to send hasty teams in that direction, life flight was on scene. They were able to land relatively close to the injured individual and began critical patient care immediately. Within 20 minutes of landing they had the patient packaged, loaded, and at 6:39 the ship was back in the air heading to Missoula St Pat’s hospital. As of 5:30 Sunday evening the man was in stable/good condition. Thanks to sheriff deputy A Cross for keeping S&R appraised of the progress of Flight and the situation on the mountain. MD and Sam Peterson were called and put on standby in case Life Flight couldn’t land or the LZ wound up being too far from the patient. Other Beaverhead SAR members showing for the incident were: Tommy Goins, Mike Clarke, Trent Cottom, Keri Carson, Trevor Hyland, Don Smith, Parke Scott, Russ Sigman, Mel Rice, and Clint Rouse. Be prepared when you go out to play and be safe out there, lots of things can go wrong.. “In the Business of Saving Lives”, your Beaverhead Search and Rescue.
