- Bulldogs Track & Field Competes Well At Montana Open
Lindsey Branch, UMW Sports Information Photo Credit Gary Marshall MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana Western track & field team continued to show improvement this weekend with another impressive six personal bests set at the Montana Open. "We had some strong performances this meet which is exciting as we had into conference next week. Justene was able to place 6th out of our conference schools in steeplechase. Additionally, Brody was able to drop five seconds off his 1500m personal record which was exciting to see," Head Coach Taylor Grove said. "Gracie and Wade were both able to improve their times in the 100m and 110m hurdles. Ruby was able to run a 5k personal record and Olivia was right near hers as well. Justin keeps improving week to week, being able to grab a personal record in the discus again. I think we are in a good spot going to the conference meet next week." Highlights Six Bulldogs earned personal bests with Justene Santi placing sixth in the Frontier Conference 3000m steeple event after she earned a personal best time in the event. Brody Henry , Wade Dahood , and Justin Maier each earned personal bests for the men's team in their events. Ruby Smith and Gracie Yakos each earned personal bests on the day, with Smith earning hers in the 500m race and Yakos in the 100m hurdles. Bats were blistering as the Dillon Beavers defeated the Ronan Varsity Maidens 12-11 on Saturday in a dramatic match. Despite being out-hit 12 to 8, the Beavers showcased tenacity and determination by coming back from a 11-7 deficit in the fourth inning. The Ronan Varsity Maidens began strong, scoring three runs in the first inning when Nevaeh Perez homered to left field. The Maidens added another run in the second inning after Kailyn Marengo grounded into a fielder's choice. In the second inning, the Dillon Beavers flipped the script, scoring six runs on just one hit to take a 7-4 lead. The inning's highlight was a defensive error by Ronan that allowed three runs to score. However, Ronan responded in the top of the third, reclaiming the lead by scoring five runs on two hits. Marengo delivered a crucial single following a 6-pitch at-bat, driving in two runs and putting the Maidens ahead 9-7. In a back-and-forth battle, the Beavers regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Kailyn Marengo induced Bailey Blake to hit into a fielder's choice, scoring two runs, followed by a double from Bridget Lovaas that brought in another. Trenton Moreni , Kanin Engelhardt , Jase Alvarez , Sawyer Tackett , and Cohen Hartman each contributed a hit for the Beavers, demonstrating a strong offensive effort. Both teams showcased solid pitching, with the Laurel Locomotives’ pitchers striking out seven batters while the Beavers recorded six strikeouts in response. Laurel was the first to score, taking the lead in the top of the third inning when Eric Haus hit a sacrifice fly and Dallas Jackson lined out, each contributing one run to the scoreboard. This is a memoir with a specific focus on what it means to grow up in the West as a man. Russell Rowland’s father took a job as a ranch manager when Russell was ten, and it led to two of the worst years of his parents’ marriage because his mother, who grew up on a ranch in Southeastern Montana, never wanted to live on a ranch again. Rowland explores how this period in his family’s life, and how growing up in Montana impacted his view of the world. Russell, a fourth-generation Montanan is a critically-acclaimed author, a teacher, and a radio and podcast host. His radio show called 56 Counties can be heard on Yellowstone Public Radio. From the written to the spoken word, he is a true voice of the Big Sky Country. Rowland was born in Bozeman, Montana. He teaches at the Gotham Writer’s Workshops, taught at Boston University where he received him MA in creative writing. At one time he lived in San Francisco where he was employed writing fortunes found in fortune cookies. - UMW P.A.T.H. & Women's Resource Center Hosts “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” Event
DILLON, MT – The phrase “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” took on a new meaning Thursday afternoon as the University of Montana Western’s P.A.T.H. (Peers Advocating Towards Health) and the Women’s Resource Center held their second annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event. This initiative is part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and aims to raise awareness about sexual violence, gender-based violence, and the critical importance of supporting survivors. Participants were encouraged to don high heels and navigate a course that began at UMW, traveled down Atlantic Street to the Catholic Church, and returned to campus. The event drew a diverse group of participants, including officers from the Dillon Police Department and firefighters from the Dillon Volunteer Fire Department , who joined in the spirit of the event by sporting flashy heels and strutting their stuff to help raise awareness. A highlight of the event was a heartfelt speech delivered by sexual assault survivor Cherie Lewis , who shared her personal experiences and underscored the invaluable support provided by victim advocates throughout her journey. “Having this type of support is essential for survivors,” Lewis expressed, reminding attendees of the importance of community involvement in raising awareness and assisting those affected by sexual violence.
- Bryan Mussard To Receive UMW Alumni Distinguished Service Award
The University of Montana Western’s 128th Annual Commencement Ceremony, to be held on Saturday, May 10, will honor Bryan Mussard with the University’s Alumni Distinguished Service Award. Mussard was raised in Dillon, Montana and graduated from Beaverhead County High School. He earned his Associate’s Degree in Business from Montana Western in 1991 and has remained a proud alumnus and dedicated supporter of the university and community ever since. Bryan and his wife, Marcia, reside in Dillon, where they own and operate Big West Management and Reminisce Angus Ranch with their family. For nearly four decades, Mussard has built a reputation for excellence, integrity, and innovation in ranching and business. A successful entrepreneur, he founded Gorgeous Vodka, an award-winning, 93-point-rated brand that has earned five gold medals. He also founded Cattle Baron Cigars, a nationally distributed line rated between 91–93 points, and Reminisce Angus Beef, which supplies premium beef to high-end resorts along the Rocky Mountain Front, as well as grocery stores across Montana and the United States. Mussard credits Montana Western for helping to shape the direction of his life. As a senior at UMW, he developed a business plan that led to the creation of the Mussard Bull Development Center, a business that focused on the development and performance testing of bulls from across the United States for nearly a decade. In addition to his professional achievements, Mussard has supported Montana Western and the Dillon community for over 30 years. He has been a member of the Montana Stockgrowers Association for more than 20 years, serving as president in 2017 and 2018. “Bryan’s leadership, entrepreneurial success, and mentorship of the next generation reflect a lasting commitment to both his industry and our community. The University of Montana Western is proud to recognize him with the 2025 Alumni Distinguished Service Award,” said UMW Foundation Executive Director, Roxanne Engellant. They continued to build momentum in the third, with Kinzy Creighton extending the lead to 3-0 through another single. The fourth inning proved to be a breakout moment for the Beavers, as they scored an impressive 13 runs. Sidney Morris led the team with two walks, contributing to their efforts as they accumulated a total of six walks during the game. - Dillon Construction Update April 22
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its partner Jeffery Contracting, LLC are improving the road surface and sidewalk along North Montana Street from East Helena Street to North Interchange Road. Construction crews anticipate beginning work in May, with activity continuing through July. This project aims to extend the service life of the road while improving sidewalks to support mobility for all users and ensure a continuous, accessible route along the segment. Proposed work includes new pavement, seal and cover (chip seal), sidewalk ramps, connecting sidewalk sections, and upgrading signage. All work is subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. During construction, travelers can expect minimal delays and maintained two-way traffic, with occasional use of flaggers as needed. MDT and Jeffery Contracting appreciate the public’s cooperation in following traffic control measures and remaining alert for workers in the project area. - Henry Takes Top Spot In 800m Race, Six Bulldogs Earn PRs At Trudnowski Open
Lindsey Branch, UMW Sports Information HELENA, Mont. – The Montana Western Track and Field team continued their season at the Trudnowski Open hosted by Carroll College this weekend. Four women and two men recorded person records at the meet. Highlights Brody Henry had an impressive day on the track, winning the men's 800m race in the field of seven competitors. Four Bulldog women recorded personal bests on the track, with two Bulldogs earning marks in the women's 1500m race. Ruby Smith and Kylee Wyatt each recorded PRs, with Smith placing 8th and Wyatt 12th in the race. Gracie Yakos competed in the women's 100m hurdles, finishing with her own personal best with a 12th place finish. Olivia Canney rounded out the personal bests for the women's side on the day with a 3rd place finish in the 800m race. Two Bulldog men finished with personal bests on the day. Wade Dahood finished in 3rd place in the men's 110m hurdles. Bridger Wheeler competed in the men's 800m race, recording a personal best time and placing 3rd.
