- Firefighters Make Significant Progress On Sawlog Fire In Montana; Containment Reaches 90%
Wise River, MT Fire crews battling the Sawlog Fire have achieved a major milestone, now reaching 90% containment. Efforts are focusing on patrol and mop-up operations along the western edge of the fire to secure containment lines and extinguish residual hot spots. As part of ongoing strategy, firefighters have dismantled temporary "spike camps" near the fire and returned to the Incident Command Post with their gear. A helicopter supported cargo operations during a two-hour weather window, while unmanned aerial systems (UAS) conducted infrared missions to locate and map lingering heat along the perimeter. Resource managers from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Forest Service (FS) are evaluating environmental impacts and formulating repair plans. Crews continue patrolling containment lines and addressing residual heat, especially in the Walker Creek drainage northeast of the fire, an area linked to the Alder Fire of 2021. Weather conditions remain a variable factor. Recent storms brought gusty winds up to 40 miles per hour but little precipitation. Today’s forecast predicts temperatures in the 60s with a slight 10% chance of light rain and southwest winds up to 35 mph. However, a larger system is expected to bring widespread rain and sustained wetting conditions on Tuesday, aiding suppression efforts. Fire behavior remains relatively limited, primarily creeping and smoldering within unburned patches. Minimal smoke production indicates that the fire is now mostly contained but still needs monitoring. Public safety measures are in place, with the Montana Fish, Wildfire, and Parks Department closing the Fishtrap Creek Fishing Access Site from Mudd Creek Bridge to Sportsman’s Park due to fire activity. Additionally, the Bureau of Land Management has issued a temporary closure for the Sawlog dispersed camping area at the Big Hole River ford site. Fire officials and resource agencies continue assessments and preparations as they monitor weather conditions to support ongoing firefighting operations. Updates and detailed closure information are available on the InciWeb page: https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident/mtbdf-sawlog

- Walsh Legislative Report
Rep. Ken Walsh: Delivering Tax Relief & Conservation Wins in Montana By Representative Kenneth Walsh, House District 69 The 69th Montana Legislative Session wrapped up on April 30th, marking the 85th day of productive debate and policymaking. As a third-term member of the House of Representatives, I am proud of the work accomplished to ease financial burdens, cut taxes, and expand conservation efforts for Montanans. Historic Property Tax Relief One of the most significant achievements this session was passing Senate Bill 542 and House Bill 231 , providing much-needed property tax relief . Senate Bill 542 delivers a $400 rebate to Montana property taxpayers next year, while House Bill 231 restructures residential property tax rates, bringing substantial cuts: 0.76% on the first $400,000 of property value 1.1% on values between $400,001 and $1.5 million 2.2% on property above $1.5 million These reforms will result in average property tax savings of 34% compared to last year and 40% compared to what taxes would have been under previous laws . Importantly, this package protects Montana’s agriculture and industry sectors from rate hikes, ensuring fairness across all communities. The Largest Income Tax Cut in State History Tax relief didn’t stop at property taxes— House Bill 337 introduced major reductions in income tax rates to help working families across Montana. The new tax structure will lower rates from 5.9% to 5.65% in 2026 , followed by a drop to 5.44% in 2027 . For families filing jointly, the threshold for a higher tax rate jumps from $41,000 to $95,000 in 2026 , and to $130,000 in 2027 —a significant win for working-class Montanans. Expanding Conservation Efforts One of my proudest accomplishments this session was House Bill 932 , which I sponsored and successfully sent to the governor’s desk. This bill unlocks new opportunities for conservation funding by expanding the use of revenue from the state’s marijuana tax special account. Previously, these funds were restricted to land purchases and easements, but now, they can be used for critical environmental projects such as: Irrigation infrastructure Forest management and prescribed burns Noxious weed mitigation Wetland protection Wildlife crossings Riparian protection and repair Wildlife friendly fencing Range and soil management practices By empowering conservation districts, private landowners, and public land users alike, HB 932 marks a significant victory for Montana’s natural resources . Looking Ahead This session was one for the books, filled with challenges and triumphs alike. I am honored to serve alongside dedicated legislators on both sides of the aisle, and I remain committed to representing House District 69 with integrity. As we move into the interim, I encourage all Montanans to stay engaged and share their concerns, ideas, and priorities. Your voice matters in shaping the future of our state, and I look forward to continuing this work for the people of Montana. Representative Ken Walsh kenneth.walsh@legmt.gov 406-596-0418

- Progress Continues On The Sawlog Fire With Increased Acreage And Ongoing Operations
WISER RIVER, MT – An infrared (IR) flight conducted last night mapped the fire perimeter and confirmed heat remains throughout the area. Based on improved mapping accuracy, the estimated size of the fire has increased to approximately 1,834 acres . The IR flight also verified that heat persists across the entire fire footprint, excluding the roughly 200-acre interior “donut hole” of unburned fuels. Strategic firing operations were completed yesterday in the interior “donut hole” on the north side of Sawlog Creek. Using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), firefighters lit and burned fuels between the uncontrolled fire edge and existing control lines on the eastern flank. Today, firefighters plan to continue strategic firing on the south side of Sawlog Creek to reduce available fuels between the uncontrolled edge and control line. Crews also completed fireline just north of Tucker Creek from the south side, with fire suppression teams working along the existing fireline. Support includes two skidgen units conducting mop-up operations south along the fire boundary, with multiple smokejumpers and hotshot crews assisting on the eastern flank. Helicopters continue to deliver supplies to keep crews operational and well-equipped. Firefighters are actively checking and cold-trailing along the western and northern edges, extinguishing hot spots. A boat is being used to ferry personnel across the Big Hole River on the fire’s west side. This work will continue into the coming days to secure and improve containment lines. Weather conditions today and tomorrow are expected to be challenging, with strong southwest winds and afternoon thunderstorms likely to produce gusts exceeding 35 mph . Sunday could bring continued high winds, with a low chance of precipitation, but any rain is expected to be minimal. Public Safety & Closures: The Fishtrap Creek Fishing Access Site on the Big Hole River is closed from Mudd Creek Bridge to Sportsman’s Park due to fire activity. The Bureau of Land Management has issued a temporary closure for the Sawlog dispersed camping area at the Big Hole River ford site. Details are available on the InciWeb Sawlog Fire page . Fire officials remain focused on firefighter safety, protecting live and property safety, and working toward full containment.

- Progress Continues On Sawlog Fire: Containment Up To 30%
WISER RIVER, MT – Containment of the Sawlog Fire has increased to 30 percent as firefighters advance along the northern, southern, and western edges. While progress is steady, some residual heat remains along Sawlog Creek’s sides and in isolated hotspots inside the burn area. Today, firefighters plan to execute strategic firing operations on approximately 200 acres, creating a “donut hole” on both sides of Sawlog Creek. This tactic targets the high concentration of unburned fuels in the dead and downed timber, aiming to reduce the risk of further spread. A combination of hand and aerial ignitions, supported by Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) technology, will be used. On the southern flank, crews will continue to secure and hold lines, hot-spotting residual heat from the Big Hole River northward towards Sawlog Creek. Heavy equipment will soon be used to construct firelines directly adjacent to the fire’s edge from Sawlog Creek toward Tucker Creek. In the north, smokejumpers and hotshot crews are patrolling containment lines and mopping up hotspots south toward Tucker Creek. A helicopter continues to support firefighting efforts with cargo missions on the eastern flank. Crews will also focus on cold trailing and hot spotting along the entire western perimeter, working to reinforce and improve containment lines over the coming days. Last night’s higher humidity helped limit fire behavior, but warmer and drier conditions are expected today with only a small chance of showers or thunderstorms. Gusty southwest winds up to 25 mph are forecasted in the afternoon. Saturday may bring scattered showers and isolated storms with gusts exceeding 35 mph, followed by similar conditions on Sunday with gusts over 30 mph. Safety and Closures: The Fishtrap Creek Fishing Access Site on the Big Hole River is closed from Mudd Creek Bridge to Sportsman’s Park due to fire activity. The Bureau of Land Management has issued a temporary closure for the Sawlog dispersed camping area at the Big Hole River ford site. Details are available on the InciWeb Sawlog Fire Page . Fire officials emphasize that firefighter safety and the protection of life and property remain their top priorities during this ongoing incident.
