  • Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture Partners with UMW Glass Program on Summer Treasure Hunt

The Beaverhead County Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture and the University of Montana Western Glass Program have partnered to create a fun scavenger hunt activity throughout Beaverhead County this summer. One-of-a-kind glass cowboy hat paperweights, custom made by UMW Glass students, will be hidden at local businesses from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Proudly presented by the Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, over 100 glass cowboy hats made by the students in the University of Montana Western Glass Arts Program, under the instruction of Professor Ruth King, are hidden in the shops of: Bannack, Dillon, Lima, Dell, Grant, Jackson, Wisdom, Wise River, Dewey, Glen, and Melrose. Visit these towns’ businesses for a chance to find a glass cowboy hat paperweight from Memorial Day through Labor Day! According to Chamber Executive Director, Rebecca Jones, “Anyone who finds a cowboy hat gets to take it home and enjoy the fun memories of finding it! Each limited-edition paperweight is etched with a registration number. Participants can bring their prize into the Beaverhead Chamber office located at 10 W. Reeder St. in Dillon for another prize and to receive a certificate of authenticity. And there is a special prize for finding cowboy hats in colors other than blue!” The rules of the Beaverhead Treasure Hunt are: Ten cowboy hats are hidden weekly from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Cowboy hats remain hidden rain or shine, Each participant is limited to taking home one cowboy hat paperweight this summer, so everyone has a chance to join in the fun! The term “hidden” is used loosely; some of the cowboy hats have been cleverly hidden in plain sight in public areas, historical sites and local businesses. Participants are asked to be respectful of these areas while searching. The Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture thanks the University of Montana Western Glass Art Program for sponsoring the Treasure Hunt as well as to all of the students for designing and producing these unique paperweights. • Governor Gianforte Signs Landmark Investment In Broadband Expansion

Governor Greg Gianforte today signed into law the ConnectMT Act, providing $275 million in federal funds to expand access to reliable broadband across Montana. “Too many of our communities, particularly in rural and frontier Montana, don’t have access to reliable broadband,” Gov. Gianforte said in Hamilton. “Greater access to broadband will increase opportunities for Montanans, whether in ag or high-tech or other Montana industries, but we need to get more cable in the ground. Today, we make a historic investment to close the digital divide. I thank Sen. Ellsworth for being a champion for expanding Montanans’ access to broadband.” Sponsored by Senator Jason Ellsworth (R-Hamilton), Senate Bill 297 captures $275 million in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act for broadband deployment. According to the Federal Communications Commission, about 1 in 3 Montanans do not have access to broadband, which is three times the national average. The digital divide is even greater in Montana’s rural communities where 3 in 5 Montanans do not have access to broadband. “Thanks to Governor Gianforte signing SB 297 into law, Republicans’ promises to create jobs, increase access to high-quality education, and improve our broadband infrastructure are being kept,” said Senate President Pro Tempore Jason Ellsworth. “With the potential for additional matching funds still on their way, this could be the largest broadband investment in Montana’s history – worth around half a billion dollars. There’s no doubt that this investment in Montana will pay major dividends for state of Montana.” Expanding access to reliable broadband is a central element of Gov. Gianforte’s Montana Comeback Plan.

  • Campsite Reservation Process on Madison District

Madison Co, Mont., May 05, 2021 — The number of campers in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest increased dramatically in the past year, as COVID-19 increased the number of visitors and campers looking to enjoy time on public lands. In response to this influx of visitors, beginning May 14th, 2021 reservations will be required to secure a campsite at Cliff Point, Wade Lake, and Madison River campsites located in the Madison District of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest (BDNF). Due to the popularity of these sites, these campsites can now be reserved through Recreation.gov , the vendor that handles booking and permitting for the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and more. These campsites have limited availability and we encourage those members of the public wanting to camp here to make reservations online as soon as possible to ensure they have a reserved campsite. The move to making these reservations available online ensures the public can make reservations at any time, rather than requiring time during normal business hours or making the trip then realizing there are not any campsites available. Anyone with questions is welcome to call the Madison District office at 406-682-4253 .

  • Beaverhead Bomb Squad Host Mother’s Day Baseball Tournament

Beaverhead Travel Baseball hosted their first official tournament this Mother’s Day weekend. It was a hit having seven teams total play in the tournament, with the 10U and 12 U Beaverhead Bomb Squad, the Butte Dirt Ballers, Butte Diamonds, Idaho Falls Bandits, and the Salmon Pirates. After three years of trying to have the tournament, this was the first year the tournament was able to be pulled off without a hitch. In the previous two years, tournament organizers saw a cancellation due to rain, and just last year, they had to cancel due to COVID. This year the Bomb Squads 10U team came out as the tournament champs, with a win over the Dirt Ballers. Talking with Andy Bartlome, he wanted to thank all the parents who pulled off every type of duty from concessions, scorekeeping, and even some janitorial work. My wife for dealing with me during the tournament. The players who were no longer eligible to play showed up to do some umpiring for the games, as well as RJ Fitzgerald and other fathers who umpired the games and donated the pay back to the league. Any money raised from the tournament will go back to future tournament fees and help in keeping down the cost of the program. Andy also stated, “We want to thank the community for their show of support, and we hope this helped to stimulate the local economy with the players and parents it brought to Dillon.” “With the 10U team, they have had some long years, but they are starting to come into their own and we couldn’t be prouder of them. Next up for our teams will be the Max Hemmert Memorial Tournament on Father’s Day weekend in Salmon, ID.” The Beaverhead Bomb Squad players and coaches are as follows: 12U Team Roster: Andrew Bartlome, Ben Peacock, Brant Nelson, Chase Hutchison, Chris Valach, Cole Freitas, Garrett Tackett, Levi Stonebraker, Logan Fox, Steven Lubinski, and Ty Wellman 10U Team Roster: Colton Bartlome, Austin Blando, Brody Curnow, Gage Curnow, Colter Evans, Easton Oswald, Gordon Broeder, Jaxon Nagle, Knox Peacock, Landon lovaas, Noah Feenstra, Tanner Stonebraker Coaches are: Andy Bartlome, Evan Peacock, Erik Broeder, and Zach Oswald See tournament results below along with a picture gallery from the tournament.

  • Search And Rescue Responds To Second Call In May

Beaverhead Search & Rescue News Submitted by Mel Rice – Public Relations Saturday afternoon, May 8th at 5:30 P.M., the Beaverhead Search and Rescue was paged out to assist two elderly individuals on the west side of the Big Hole Valley. An 82 year old gentleman and a 75 year old lady from Hamilton were out for a drive on the Foothills Road west of Wisdom in the early afternoon. They had driven approximately 2.75 miles off hi-way 43 when their vehicle, a Nissan truck, became stuck. Not being able to get the vehicle out, they started walking out for help. After walking about a half mile, the couple became fatigued and cold. Doing the right thing they used their cell phone to call 911 for assistance. At 6:40 P.M. two members of the Beaverhead Search and Rescue, Jake Peterson and Toby Shephard, who live in the Big Hole, were deployed as the hasty team to the elderly couple’s location. At the same time Team #2 made up of Clint Rouse and Park Scott and team #3 made up of Tara Remely, Tommy Goins, and Mark Smith was deployed from the S&R building. At 7:08 P.M. Peterson and Shephard located the couple and were turning around to take them to the Crossing restaurant in Wisdom where they would meet family/friends who would take them home. Teams 2 and 3 were called back to headquarters at that time. The entire incident was culminated at 9:45 P.M. The IC team which remained at the Search and Rescue building to manage the incident were Lawrence Morrisroe, Allen Holt, Lee Deidrich, Kolby Malesich, Shane Puyear, Trent Cottom, and Cody Schnee. Two other members, Tom McKnight and Nathan Freeman, were also at the building in case more assistance was needed. The entire incident involved 54.75 man hours. Resources used were three pickups and one side by side. This is the second call-out in a week for the Beaverhead Search and Rescue due to individuals driving vehicles back into the high country. Be aware that even though it is spring time, we are still in Western Montana where snow pack can remain even on roads well into June. Please, don’t push your luck. Help us out by being reasonable when trying to venture into the back country. However, if you do run into the unexpected and need the S&R’s assistance, be assured we will be there to help because we are “In The Business Of Saving Lives”. Take care and enjoy the great outdoors of Beaverhead County

  • Traveling Volunteers Help Revitalize Facilities At Bannack State Park

Volunteers and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks staff recently completed a major revitalization project at Bannack State Park. The 23-person volunteer crew participated through A Year to Volunteer . This project brings together people who travel in their recreational vehicles to perform service in communities around the country. With help from FWP staff, volunteers donated 1,011 hours of service over the course of nine days. Their work accomplished several projects benefiting the park: 500 feet of boardwalk reconstructed New steps and stringers installed on the Hotel Meade front porch 253 windows cleaned 35 buildings deep cleaned Porch roof and floor replaced at the Mabel Ovitt House Graffiti removed in 10 buildings This project was also supported by AmeriCorps, as well as donations from the Bannack Association and The Home Depot. About 20 miles west of Dillon, Bannack State Park is a National Historic Landmark and the site of Montana’s first major gold discovery in 1862. More than 50 historic buildings line Bannack’s Main Street. The park holds events throughout the year to commemorate Bannack’s significant role in Montana history. Their service will benefit the park and its visitors for many years to come.” For more information about Bannack State Park, visit fwp.mt.gov/stateparks/bannack .

  • Beaverhead Search & Rescue News

On Wednesday May 5th, the Beaverhead Search and Rescue held its monthly meeting at the S&R building. Commander Lawrence Morrisroe called the meeting to order at 7:05. There were 28 members in attendance with some of them attending via zoom. It was a very short general meeting so there was time to do equipment inventory of all the unit’s equipment trailers. The first order of business was to recap the search that took place in the Crystal Park area. There were four members that participated in the search: Mel Rice, Tara Remely, Alex Dunn, and Lawrence Morrisroe. Each year BVHS S&R is invited to cook for an Elk’s Club stag night. April was the unit’s month. We prepared steak, French fries, scones, vegie, and salad. Preparing the meal were members: Tater and Jennifer McKay, Tara Remely, Brian Demars, Alan Holt, Trent Cottom, Lawrence Morrisroe, and Kolby Malesich. Nathan Freeman, training officer, informed the members of several training opportunities forthcoming. Thursday night Life Flight was down to teach about packaging patients, safety operations around a helicopter, landing zones, and procedures for getting them involved in a search/rescue. Toward the middle of June there will be First Aid and CPR training. It is a requirement of the Unit that every member must have current certifications in CPR and First Aid. Then on July 10th, there will be a joint training with the Forest Service in the Gravelly Range on how to perform duties and work safely in Grizzly Bear country. On the 3rd of October we will be participating in a multi-agency training exercise at Maverick Mountain. It is called Mass Casualty. Commander Morrisroe informed the membership that the storage units which were going to be auctioned off in lieu of the BVHD S&R auction, had been sold during a storage war type auction sponsored by “The Storage Place”. Thank you to Jim Harvey for his support of Beaverhead Search and Rescue and for letting us piggy back on his auction event. There will not be an auction at this time but will resume in the future. With any luck the Search and Rescue sign out on Hwy 41 North will be hanging again by the end of the week. A 70 mph gust of wind snapped the sign in half. With a little tender loving care it was salvaged. The last order of business was the recognition of Luke Lenski and Steve Scott who have turned in letters of resignation. Luke was a member for a short time helping out where ever and whenever he could. Steve Scott on the other hand has been an exemplary member for 47 years. Steve is one of the original members of the unit which started around 1974. He has served as commander 2 years, vice commander 2 years, Auction chairman 6 years, Fish Derby chairman 8 years, on the board of directors multiple years and many other committees over the years. He was elected member of the year by his peers 2 different times. Steve could be counted on anytime there was a search/rescue, a work party, and for any other official business related to the S&R. His knowledge of operations, training experiences, field experiences, and ground knowledge of Beaverhead County will be greatly missed. Thank you, Steve Scott, for your 47 years of dedicated service to the Beaverhead Search and Rescue. The meeting adjourned at 7:40. On behalf of your Search and Rescue I would like to remind everyone to have wonderful times enjoying the great outdoors of Beaverhead County. However, please be prepared for different situations that might arise during your adventures. Weather this time of year can change in a heartbeat so don’t take anything for granted. Whether you are in your car, hiking the great mountains, or on the water, be safe, be prepared, and take care of yourselves. “In The Business of Saving Lives”, your Beaverhead Search and Rescue.
