Elk hunters interested in signing up for an opportunity to hunt cow elk on private lands enrolled in Elk Hunting Access (EHA) agreements can do so today through Aug 1. The resulting EHA public hunter list will be randomized with hunters contacted sequentially starting at the top of the list. This email contact will include instructions for timely next steps the hunter needs to take to participate in the access opportunity. The participating private lands are located in hunting districts 416, 426, 445 and 590. The required hunting licenses are Elk B 004-00 and Elk B 005-00. There will be a separate sign-up list for each license and hunters may sign-up for both lists. To be placed on the EHA public sign-up list, resident and nonresident hunters can sign up through the MyFWP portal: https://myfwp.mt.gov/fwpExtPortal/login/login.jsp . This process requires hunters to keep their email address current in their ALS record. Possession of a qualifying Elk B license is not required to sign up on the EHA public hunter list, but hunters must possess the required license when they go hunting. Both the Elk B 004-00 and Elk B 005-00 licenses will be available to purchase over the counter starting Aug. 8 to both residents and nonresidents. If selected, hunters must finalize their acceptance of the hunting opportunity within the time frame specified in the email; otherwise, the opportunity will be offered to the next hunter on the randomized list. Hunters will be required to agree to terms set by the EHA agreement including but not limited to land use restrictions, harvest reporting and participation in FWP’s annual program satisfaction survey. Once a hunter declines a hunting opportunity, he or she will not be eligible to be selected for any other 2022 EHA hunting opportunity. The morning is started off early with a flag raising ceremony at 6:15 AM, then a free pancake breakfast follows at Fetty’s on the Main Street, down town Wisdom. This year our Patriotic Speaker is Greg Fellows. Greg and his wife Chris are newcomers to Wisdom but both grew up in Montana Greg was a pilot flying all types of missions all over the world. After breakfast, the locals get their horses, and tractors, and their buggies, and their kids, and all go out to enjoy the annual Wisdom Fourth of July Parade. During the parade much candy and other goodies are tossed to the crowds of children watching by the parade participants. A lot of people dress in red/white/and blue to honor old glory. The parade will start at 10:00 AM. Entry in the parade is free, so if you want to be in the parade meet behind Larry’s Automotive by 9:30 am. After the parade we have a fund raiser Bar-b-que to benefit our local Volunteer Fire Departments and EMT/Ambulance crews. Hamburger's and hot dogs hot off the grill, along with many other side dishes served "potluck" style is sure to fill you up. The University of Montana Western Foundation is pleased to announce that Joelnell Momberg and Darcy Walker have been awarded the 1970s Western Montana College (WMC) Alumni Scholarship for 2022-23. UMW Press Release To be awarded this scholarship, students must hold at least a 3.0 GPA and have a relative that is an alumni of the University of Montana Western. Each student will be awarded a $500 scholarship for the 2022-23 academic year. The 1970s WMC Alumni Scholarship has been providing students with financial support since 2019. Starting as a conversation between alumni Wally Feldt and Tom Tucker in 2018, the idea quickly developed into establishing a scholarship that would begin a legacy of providing financial support for students and honoring the institution that was instrumental in shaping their lives and the lives of many others who attended Western Montana College in the 1970s (now the University of Montana Western). University of Montana Western Foundation Director, Roxanne Engellant, was able to guide their efforts in establishing the scholarship by helping to define the award parameters, reaching out to other alumni, and creating the process for how their group of donors could be involved annually in the selection of the scholarship recipients. “This scholarship is so special not only because of the impact it has on our students but because of the collaborative efforts of so many Western graduates from the 1970s who have made it possible. Their desire to make a difference for future generations of Montana Western students is inspiring and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with all of them,” said Engellant. After 3.5 years of fundraising and the generosity of the donors, the group has endowed their scholarship with a core group of 38 donors. Every donor that has contributed any amount to the scholarship fund is eligible to participate in the annual selection of the scholarship recipients. The Dillon Jaycees held their annual demolition derby this Saturday night, and it did not disappoint as over 24 cars competed to bring home some of the $15,500 in purse money. This years competition also had the popular herby derby, the UTV barrel races, and the kids power wheels balloon pop. The kids balloon pop saw around 10 entries as the little ones where set loose, they didn't always follow the plan but a Jaycee was there to get them back on track. As parents rewired batteries a battle of the ages would play out with only two remaining. To declare the final winner the last two raced around the track as El Toro Loco driven by Brixie Clark, would come out the winner. The ATV barrel race pitted drivers to a course one is use to watching during a rodeo only it is done with UTV's. This year all the contest completed the course without suffering a rollover. The herby derby saw compact cars fight it out to see who would be left standing, the full size cars would fight it out tell only one car would be declared the winner. A full night of thrills and spills was had by the crowd as they enjoyed a legendary Jaycee burger and put back a few of those cold ones that accompany a Jaycee event. Local Fire, Sheriff, and Ambulance responded to a single vehicle accident Sunday afternoon June 26, after receiving reports of a single vehicle wreck near mile marker 8. Montana Highway Patrol has the accident listed with injuries. First responders were on scene to help with traffic flow as well as making sure those involved received medical treatment and transportation to the hospital. We will update this article if more information becomes available.

On Thursday June 23 the Dillon Cubs took on the Missoula Mavericks at Ray Lynch Park. The double header was opened up with a strong showing by the Cubs in game 1. The Cubs pulled a 5 to 2 win in game one. Game two would see the Mavericks hold the score closer throughout the entire game. The wind was blowing as usual that led to some deep hits into the outfield. By the end of the game the Cubs pulled another win in with an 8 to 7 score. The Beaverhead County Museum in Dillon, Mt, has a new exhibit entitled Indigenous Peoples of Southwest Montana. To celebrate the occasion they held a day to show off the exhibit as well as activities to help people understand the period of time the museum exhibit covers. On Friday night a private viewing and trip to the Wheat Bison Jump, followed by a presentation by local author and Archeologist Carl M. Davis and a presentation on the new display by curator Ron Loge. Kicked off the activities. On Saturday you could take a short bus trip to the buffalo jump and learn how the Indigenous people used them to hunt and kill animals. At the museum one could learn first hand on the tanning of hides. The use of a primitive weapon called an atlatl, one could sample bison tongue as well as beaver tail and many other informative events. With the Dillon Jaycees demolition derby being held today one would think the only cars you would see around town would be those preparing for tonight's entertainment. But if you take a drive past The Den your eyes will be treated to a different type of car. Car enthusiasts have gathered at The Dens parking lot to show off their pride and joy at the Car-Ona car show. One might still have time to swing on down and catch a glimpse of these beauties before they are gone.
