The Cadet was located on top of the roof at the Lewis & Clark Dinning Hall. With the quick action of UMW Staff, MYCA Staff, Officer Wheatley, Dillon Voluntary Fire Department and Assistant Fire Chief Wade Hucke the Cadet was able to be safely removed from the roof without further incident. These are the true professionals that the community of Dillon rely upon day in and day out. The Montana Department of Commerce announced today that the 2023 Tourism Grant program application cycle is now open. The Tourism Grant program funds projects that strengthen Montana’s economy through the development and enhancement of the state’s tourism and recreation industry. A total of $1 million is available for projects that develop and enhance tourism and recreation products which have the potential to increase out-of-area visitation. “Tourism is one of Montana’s leading industries. Out-of-area visitors add money to the state’s economy, supporting jobs and reducing state and local taxes for Montana residents,” said Montana Department of Commerce Director Scott Osterman. “Recently, Montana’s tourism economy took a significant hit, largely due to flooding. These grants will help support the development of tourism and recreation projects, increase visitation, and stabilize our tourism-dependent communities while reinforcing Montana’s draw as a destination for travelers from all over the world.” Applications for the grant funding will be open to Montana-based non-profit 501(c) organizations, Tribal governments, city governments, and county governments. Funds are generally awarded to tourism and recreation projects within these categories: Digital product development for online assets that create or contain a destination brand for the tourism and/or recreation industry. Heritage preservation projects which preserve, protect, or restore Montana’s arts, culture and/or heritage treasures. Infrastructure upgrades or enhancement projects of tourism facilities to enrich visitor experience and increase revenue. Niche product development projects within the three brand pillars of interest to out-of-area visitors as identified in the Montana Destination Brand Research Study . Wayfinding for a community or outdoor recreation opportunity through signage, mapping, or destination development. The 2023 annual application cycle closes at midnight MST on September 15. The Tourism Grant Program is funded by the 4% Lodging Facility Use Tax , commonly known as the “Bed Tax.” Enacted by the 1987 Legislature, the Bed Tax is collected from guests of hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, guest ranches, resorts, short-term vacation rentals, and campgrounds in Montana.

Traffic was backed up on Highway 278 near mile marker 22 this afternoon as first responders attended to a single vehicle crash. A Chevy SUV appears to have rolled, and ended up sideways across a portion of the road. As of now they are reporting injuries, multiple agencies were on scene in helping to control traffic and tend to the accident. We will have more information if it becomes available.

Dan Cahill, Director of the Dillon Women’s Resource Center, will be the guest speaker at the Dillon Rotary Club meeting on Wednesday, August 10th at noon. Block Management Area (BMA) Program information for 2022 will be available to hunters beginning Aug. 10. Hunters can request their BMA Access Guide online and can print individual BMA property maps and rules at fwp.mt.gov/BMA . The FWP website, fwp.mt.gov/BMA , allows hunters to download the Access Guide, up-to-date BMA maps and rules for every individual BMA enrolled in the program. These individual BMA property maps and rules are important for hunters to know and understand for each property they plan on hunting. Not all rules or instructions for obtaining landowner permission are listed in the overview guide and are unique to each BMA. The website will also feature a list of BMAs that are restricted or initially closed due to fire danger. Hunters need to use extreme caution when afield due to dry conditions at this time. Individual BMA property maps and rules are also available at self-serve sign-in boxes, or by calling or visiting FWP regional offices. Also, as in previous years, some BMAs may have varying dates they are taking hunter reservations. While reservations cannot start before Aug. 22, some BMA reservation start dates will be scattered throughout the season to better accommodate hunter demands. Hunters should check their BMA Access Guide or view the individual BMA map and rules to determine when or if a given BMA will start taking reservations. And as you’re in the field this hunting season taking advantage of the access provided by landowners through the Block Management Program, don’t forget to say thank you to Montana landowners who collaborate on access opportunities that benefit wildlife and public hunters. The Block Management Program, through partnerships with private landowners, government agencies and conservation organizations will provide access to over 7 million acres of private and isolated public lands for the 2022 hunting season.

Fish, Wildlife & Parks has closed the Stillwater River to all watercraft between Absaroka Fishing Access Site (FAS) and the confluence of the Rosebud River, which is just upstream of Jeffreys Landing FAS. Working closely with Stillwater County commissioners, FWP is providing an emergency closure of the area until further notice. The closure will begin at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9. The closure is for watercraft on the river, not other river access. An exposed natural gas pipeline has created a dangerous obstacle in the river and is impeding floaters’ ability to safely negotiate around it. Low water levels have reduced the width of the river and is now forcing floaters to go over the pipeline twice and into a debris pile on the lower portion that could potentially cause injury or drowning. The pipeline company is working on a solution.

Montana Western Men's Basketball Head Coach Mike Larsen has signed five recruits for the 2022-23 season. This incoming class features three incoming freshman and two college transfers. "I am extremely excited to welcome these five guys to the Montana Western family and the Dillon community. Our goal with the '22 class was to find impact players that can compete with our returners to take this program to the next level. We are ready for them to arrive on campus so we can get to work." coach Mike Larsen said. Brenton Woods | Guard | Compton, Calif. / Dominguez High School / Central Arizona College Woods joins the Bulldogs as a transfer from Central Arizona College and a 2019 graduate of Dominguez High School. He is a 6'2" guard that averaged 16.1 points per game last season. Woods was fifth overall in the ACCAC (NJCAA) in free throw percentage (84.6%), sixth in three-point percentage (40.2%), and tenth in three pointers (68-169). He also ranked fifth in the conference in total assists (149). He is an explosive guard that will add to the 2022-23 squad. Woods is the son of Brenton Woods and Conya Lofton. "Brenton is an incredible point guard that has the ability to play at any level of college basketball." Coach Larsen commented. "He has a unique ability to get all players around him involved and still score the ball at a very high level. We feel Brenton will make an immediate impact in our program." JaVon Lee | Point Guard | Kearns, Utah / Kearns High School Lee joins the Bulldogs as a 2022 graduate of Kearns High School in Utah. He is a three-year varsity point guard for the Cougars that averaged 11.1 points per game and made 45 three pointers in 21 games his senior season. Lee brings the quickness needed for the guard position and is able to get to the paint to score or create for others. Lee is the son of Arianne Sentence and plans on majoring in business at Montana Western. "JaVon is one of the most athletic players I have seen in my career as a coach. He is explosive, quick, and shifty. He also has the ability to score with the ball at any moment. Javon has the ability to control the game on both sides of the ball and we are excited to see that happen." Larsen said. Trent McMaster |Guard | Jefferson City, Mont. / Jefferson High School McMaster joins the Bulldogs as a 2022 graduate of Jefferson High School. He is a 6'2" four-year varsity guard for the Panthers of Jefferson High School. During his senior year, he averaged 11 points per game, four rebounds, and four assists. McMaster is the son of Jeff and Mandy McMaster and he plans on majoring in business with a minor in outdoor guiding and fishing. "Trent had a very good high school career here in Montana and we are happy to have another local guy on our team." Larsen commented. "Trent has been one of the hardest workers I have seen in the four years I have been in Montana. He is going to make an impact in this program during his career at Western." Christian Pitcher | Forward | Walnut Creek, Calif. / Berean Christian High School / Lewis & Clark College (Ore.) / Chabot College Pitcher is a 2019 graduate of Berean Christian Academy in Walnut Creek, Calif. who joins the Bulldogs as a transfer from Chabot College where he averaged nine points per game and five rebounds per game last season. During the 2019-20 season at Lewis & Clark College, Pitcher averaged 7.3 points per game and had a total of 51 rebounds on the season. At Berean Christian, Pitcher averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds during his high school campaign and earned first team all-league honors three years in a row. Standing at 6'7", Pitcher will bring size and athleticism to the forward position for the Bulldogs. He is the son of Roger Pitcher and Kimberly Gibson and plans to major in business at Montana Western. " Christian is a player that we followed all season last year and loved his growth. He has unbelievable upside because of his length and athleticism and we are very excited about him." Larsen said. Deontavius Smith | Point Guard | Montgomery, Ala. / Park Crossing High School Smith joins the Bulldogs as a 2022 graduate of Park Crossing High School in Montgomery, Alabama. During his senior year, Smith averaged 15 points, 8.9 assists, and six rebounds per game to help lead his team in winning their first regionals and area championship in school history. His junior year, he averaged 14 points and seven assists per game. Smith made the All-State second team, All-Metro first team, and is the school's all-time assists leader during his career as a Thunderbird. Deontavius is the son of Ronald Robinson and Diandria Smith and plans to major in business at Montana Western. "Dee is an outstanding high school player that we feel is going to make the jump to college athletics seamlessly. He is a great point guard that can really pass the ball and score at a very high level." Larsen said.

Plan for the week. We will be pouring curb on Bannack and poaching concrete where service lines were installed. Asphalt prep will be happening on Bannack as well as Idaho and the asphalt crew plans on paving Wednesday and Thursday. We have the new model for Idaho Street between Canter and Bannack so sub grad should be prepped and we should be graveling today or tomorrow. Pipe laying will continue in the fairgrounds and should be wrapped up by the end of the week.

NAIA Conference Champions of Character criteria includes the conference have established a Champions of Character committee, have a conduct in competition committee composed of a minimum of three conference members and have at least 60 percent of member institutions receiving the NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institution Award. The NAIA worked to collaborate with member institutions to better reflect efforts that were impacted by transition and adjustments from COVID-19. The Frontier Conference repeated as a Champions of Character Five-Star Conference. Carroll College is the only Frontier Conference member to earn the Five-Star, Gold Level Institution Award. MSU-Northern and Montana Tech earned Silver Level status. Montana Western and the University of Providence earned Bronze Level status. “As Commissioner I couldn’t be more proud of our institutions attention to detail which has led to the high individual rankings compiled on the NAIA scorecard and in turn has allowed the Frontier Conference to be once again designated as a Five-Star Award Winning Conference,” Frontier Conference Commissioner Kent Paulson said. The conference Champions of Character criteria includes the establishment of a Champions of Character committee, has a Conduct in Competition Oversight committee composed of a minimum of three members and at least 50 percent of members institutions must receive the NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institution Award. Institutions are measured on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earned points in character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Institutions earned points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by having minimal to no ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public comment on proposed 2022 snowmobile grant proposals. Public comments will be accepted through Monday Sept. 5, at 5 p.m. Montana’s Snowmobile Program received 25 grant requests and proposes to award $460,000. The program receives funding through snowmobile registrations, gas tax and Snowmobile Trail Pass revenues. Montana’s Snowmobile Program supports projects such as grooming, trail maintenance, signs, ethics education and avalanche safety. Grant awards are allocated by FWP with recommendations from the citizen-based Snowmobile Advisory Committee (SAC). The public is invited to comment on the funding requests. The University of Montana Western will hold New Student Orientation from Thursday, Aug. 18 to Sunday, Aug. 21 UMW Press Release Activities will begin Thursday morning as students move into the Residence Halls. Convocation, the official start of the school year ceremony, will take place Friday at 10:00 a.m. in the Straugh Gymnasium and will feature an inspirational keynote address by Melinda Pfundstein. Melinda Pfundstein is a joyful student of life and loves making curiosity cool. It is her personal mission to inspire creativity, wholeness, and authenticity in every space she facilitates. Through story, interactive engagement, tool-sharing, and more, the audience will: gain tools for building resiliency through self-assessment, receive a practice for leaning into inquiry and learning, acquire steps to fire up the imagination, and learn ways to engage the inner compass to navigate college (and life!) with purpose. Parents, friends, and the community of Dillon are invited to attend Convocation and the Legacy Plaza Ceremony that follows. During the last week of July, members of the Dillon Rotary Club donated and installed eight new benches in Jaycee Park. These were in addition to the four benches installed around the splashpad which were donated by the Rotary Club in the summer of 2018.
