Friday morning, November 4th at 8:36 AM, the Beaverhead Search and Rescue was paged out to rescue a 60+ year old gentleman from Butte who was diabetic and had high blood pressure. A party of two was driving a road in the Teddy Creek area up the West Fork of Blacktail. They attempted to drive through a snow drift around 3:00 PM on Thursday the 3rd of November and became stuck. After trying to dig themselves out they became very wet, cold, and tired. They could not dig out and darkness came before anyone found them. They had no cell service in this location and did not have an emergency location device like the SPOT or InReach. Both men stayed with the vehicle even though it had quit running. The party had blankets, sleeping bags, and plenty of food. It was a waiting game for them. At daylight the next morning, November 4th, two hunters from Dillon, Dave Lovell and Josh Regan, ventured upon them and offered assistance. The elderly gentleman said he would not be able to walk to the other vehicle. At that time it was decided by both parties to go to Dillon and request Search and Rescue’s assistance. They left the older gentleman in the stuck vehicle with food, water, and lots of warm blankets. At 9:35 AM on the 4th two hasty teams were deployed to the rescue area along with the hunting partner and Dave and Josh the two hunters that had given aid that morning. An ambulance was also requested and dispatched to the Teddy Creek turnoff. Upon arrival at the Teddy Creek turnoff, Graden Greenslade took a 4 wheeler with tracs up to the stuck vehicle while other rescue members took vehicles as far as possible and then walked up to the stuck vehicle. All involved got the gentleman out of the truck and into a retrieval sled. Once he was to a vehicle he was transferred from the sled and taken to the awaiting ambulance. Medical personnel, Kathy Hilton and Yvon Phillips, evaluated his condition and transported him to the hospital. The incident ended at 1:30 PM with the return of the hasty teams back to Dillon. Search and Rescue members participating in this incident were: Lawrence Morrisroe, Julia Clark, James Mathews, Mel Rice, and Graden Greenslade. Alan Holt was the IC commanding the operation from the Search and Rescue building. Search and Rescue would also like to offer a hardy thank you to Dave and Josh who offered assistance to the stuck hunting party. They gave up their entire morning to help individuals in need rather than thinking of themselves and doing what they went to do, hunt. The two individuals stuck had multiple vehicles drive by who never checked on the two occupants. We would also like to remind all hunters we have a moral and ethical obligation to offer assistance to those in need. You just may save the life of an unsuspecting individual. Put yourself in that situation; you would want those driving by to stop. With more weather being predicted for later this week, make sure you are prepared for the worst of worst scenarios. The Montana Western Men's and Women's Cross-Country teams competed in the Frontier Conference Championship Meet Friday morning. Jonathan Harrison and Araceli Ramirez led the Bulldogs as the men's team placed second overall and the women's team placed fourth overall in a very close race. Harrison placed second overall in the men's 8k and with a race time of 25:40.5. Araceli Ramirez placed sixth overall in the 5k race with a time of 19:43.2. "Proud of the effort today. We had some great results individually. We put in some really hard work this season and it's awesome to see much of it come to fruition." Head Coach Dylan Zitzer said after the race. Men's 8K Race The Bulldog men got things started on the day with the first race. Jonathan Harrison led the way for the men with a second-place finish in a time of 25:40.5 to earn All-Conference honors. Freshman Brant Heiner had a great race and came in next for the Bulldogs. He ran the course in a time of 26:45.0 and came in ninth, placing him on the All-Conference Team. Luke Lutz had a tenth-place finish that also put him on the All-Conference Team after his ran the course in a time of 26:45.6. Harrison Silverio (27:10.9, 13th) and Joe Lamb (27:35.2, 17th) rounded out the scoring five for the Bulldogs, giving them a team score of 51 and a second-place finish overall. Carlin Onstad (27:51.1), Will Hyatt (29:55.9), Jesse McMurtrey (30:57.1), and Isaiah Powell (33:24.6) all ran in the race and competed hard. Women's 5k Race The Bulldog women's team followed the men's race. Araceli Ramirez placed sixth overall in the race with a time of 19:43.2 and a solidifying her All-Conference honors. Morgan Baseley ran a great race and placed in the top ten. After running a 20:01.9, Morgan earned All-Conference honors with an eighth-place finish. Cecily Eagleton followed closely behind with a 13th place finish after she ran a 20:36.2. Liz Varner (20:58.3, 17th) and Mason Baseley (21:49.2, 25th) rounded out the women's team's scoring five, giving them a team score of 69 points in a highly competitive race. The Bulldogs were just eight down from the second and third place teams in this competitive race. Rylee Brackman (23:28.9) and Tahja Hunt (24:12.2) also raced today and competed well. Up Next The Bulldogs will be waiting to see if they qualify for the NAIA Cross Country Nationals that will be held in Tallahassee, Fla. On Nov. 18.

Officials at the University of Montana Western said current headcount for the fall semester shows the university’s total fall semester enrollment is 1,347 students, with this year’s incoming class the largest since fall 2017. The number of full-time equivalent students is 1,170. Montana Western Director of Institutional Research, Charity Walters, said this year’s incoming class increased by 7% in comparison with last fall and increased 18% from two years ago. Fall 2022’s incoming class includes 267 new freshmen, 136 transfer students and 26 readmits. “We are excited to see this increase in our enrollment because it means that more students are having the opportunity to benefit from our unique Experience One program and block scheduling model. Our top priority is providing students with immersive experiences in their fields of study, and the combination of experiential learning and the ability to focus on one course at a time opens so many doors for our students as they graduate and pursue careers or graduate school,” said University of Montana Western Chancellor, Michael Reid. Montana Western is the only U.S. public four-year institution offering Experience One where students take a single course at a time. This innovative program of teaching and learning has realized great success and stability over the past two decades in several student outcomes including retention, class completion, graduation rates, career placement, and graduate, law, medical, and veterinary school acceptance rates. UMW Sports Press Release This past weekend, seven Bulldog athletes competed this weekend in Kalispell, Mont. at the Northern Rodeo Association (NRA) finals. The Northern Rodeo Association is the premier rodeo organization in the Northwest, providing high quality rodeo events. It is the largest rodeo association in the U.S. and this season there were 31 events leading up to the NRA Rodeo Finals. Trevor Kay won the Bareback Riding event over the weekend after winning two of the three rounds and winning the average with a score of 255. Below are the results from the event and the overall results from the NRA 2022 season. NRA Finals Rodeo 2022 Trevor Kay came in first overall in the Bareback with an overall score of 255. Mikayla Witter came in second overall in Breakaway Roping with a 27.6. Matt Goings came in third overall in Team Roping (Header) with a 29.4. UMW Sports Press Release: The University of Montana Western women's basketball team is eager to start the 2022-23 season after a fourth-place finish in Frontier conference play last season. The Bulldogs will begin their season with a home opener against Dickinson State (N.D.) this Saturday, their first home season opener since the 2018-19 National Championship season. After going 15-13 in the regular season, the Bulldogs received an opening round bid to nationals where they lost 67-78 to the University of Science and Arts (Okla.) in Santa Barbara, Calif and finished the season 15-14 overall. The Bulldogs earned a preseason ranking of No. 23 in the country. "I like the makeup of our team this year." Coach Lindsay Woolley stated. "We have a few kids who have a bunch of experience in Brynley, Mesa, and Shainy; a couple transfers who will add a different dimension to our guard group in Jordan and Payton, and a strong group of freshmen. It might take us a little while to define roles with all of our new faces but we are excited about the team we will have come January." Preseason Outlook The Bulldogs are returning six from last seasons squad. Of these six, the Bulldog return all-conference and third-team All-American forward Brynley Fitzgerald . Last season, Fitzgerald started in 25 games and was her team's leading scorer as she averaged 18 points per game. She totaled 451 points on the season, was second in the conference with points per game, fifth for rebounds per game with 6.9, tallied 173 total rebounds on the season, and shot 44.6 percent from the field. "Brynley is extremely competitive and that competitiveness should lead our group. She has improved a different aspect of her game every summer and expect this year to be no different." Coach Lindsay Woolley said. The Bulldogs are also returning redshirt senior Mesa King , junior Shainy Mack , and sophomore Joelnell Momberg . King started and played in all 25 games last season. She averaged 6.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, while also tacking on 17 blocks. "We can see that Mesa worked really this summer and it will pay off for her during the season. She brings a ton of leadership and experience to the table." Woolley said. Mack returns after she averaged 9.2 points per game for the Bulldogs last season. She had a 3-point percentage of .322 and tallied 110 rebounds. "Shainy is a tireless worker who sets a standard for her teammates every day. We are expecting a big year for her." Woolley said. Momberg joined the Bulldogs last season as a freshman and earned an important role for this upcoming season after she averaged 5.4 points per game, shot .354 from the three-point line and .436 from the field. "With a year in our system under her belt now, we can see Nelly getting more comfortable and assertive in her role." Woolley said. "She's a kid with a lot of tools at her disposal on the offensive end and we are expecting to see more of them this year." The Bulldogs added eight to their roster this season, including three transfers. Jordan Sweeney joins the Bulldogs for her redshirt junior year after transferring from Idaho State University. Sweeney played in 26 games for the Bengals last season and tallied a season high of seven points and six rebounds in a game against Northern Arizona. Payton Hagy joins the Bulldogs as a transfer from North Idaho College. She averaged 9.4 points per game and was her team's leading scorer last season. "Jordan is a highly skilled guard who is going to fit really well with our style of play and Payton is another guard who can handle it, shoot it, and has a really high IQ. This is a talented group we are bringing in. It might be the deepest freshman class we have signed since I have been here. We expect them to push our returners for minutes right away. As a group they are athletic, competitive, and high character student-athletes that are eager to be coached." Woolley said. The Bulldogs will take to the court this Saturday at home against the Dickinson State (N.D.) at 3PM MST in the Straugh Gymnasium.

On October 30, 2022, at 0134 hours, Dillon Police Department Officers, Beaverhead County Sheriff Deputy, and Montana Highway Patrol Trooper responded to the Sundowner Motel where there was a report of three gunshots heard. Upon arriving on scene a male, identified as Robert Zawlocki age 26, was taken into custody without incident. The fired rounds have been recovered and did not appear to have injured anyone. We are grateful that no one was injured in this matter. The intended target is unknown at this time. The University of Montana Western Lucy Carson Library has received a collection of books donated from Northern Idaho College Professor of History, Paul Brasil. The donation features over 350 scholarly publications on World History topics including books on African, Middle Eastern, European, and Latin American history. Professor Brasil earned a B.A. in History and International Politics from California State University, Stanislaus and an M.A. and C.Phil. from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). A specialist in Modern European, Latin American, and U.S. History, Brasil has taught many courses in these fields at colleges and universities across the Northwest including the University of Montana Western during the late 1990s. Professor Brasil remembers his time teaching at Montana Western fondly and wanted to donate the collection to a university that would use it well. The collection Brasil has donated to the Lucy Carson Library originally comes from renowned historian of Portuguese and Brazilian History, Dr. Francis Dutra, who was a Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara but passed away in March 2021. A prolific scholar and generous student mentor, Dr. Dutra graduated with a Ph.D. in History from New York University shortly before arriving at UCSB in 1967 where he taught until 2013. His scholarly work focused on imperial, political and social history of colonial Brazil and Early Modern Portugal. During Dr. Dutra’s distinguished career, he became widely respected in the History Department at UCSB and in his scholarly field. The witches, warlocks, and those who just like to get out and fly a broom met again this Sunday on all hallows eve eve. It was the 5th annual Dillon Witches Brigade get together. The group meets every all Hallows eve eve at the Depot Park in Downtown Dillon. After a short meeting of spells and a good cackle to set off the ride, the witches and warlocks mount up and take the town by storm. This year's event saw a little over fifty riders dressed as witches, warlocks, and ummmmm cowboy bananas. Yep, a cowboy banana was there, folks. Most witches choose a bicycle, but a few mounted their trusty steed as they rode throughout Dillon, Bluetooth speaker playing appropriate songs and cackling along the way. Fun was had by all and those not expecting this sight, stopped and pulled out their phone to catch a quick photo of the witch’s coven of Dillon.

Dillon Elks Lodge #1554 Hoop Shoot Results BW Lodge Gym-October 30, 2022 On Sunday, November 7, 2021. three girls and three boys, ages 8-13, were crowned Champions at the Dillon Elks Lodge “Hoop Shoot”® free throw contest, which took place at BW Lodge Gymnasium in Dillon. The participants, who qualified from their School Hoop Shoot, were from the following towns: Dillon, Ennis, Sheridan, Twin Bridges, Harrison and Lima. Saturday was a busy day for Dillon, the morning kicked off with the 5th annual Run The Boo Race hosted by the Montana Running Company. The race included a 10k, 5k, and a kids race. Participants were encouraged to wear costumes while they ran. The 10K started at the Sleepy Hollow Ranch. The 5K started at the Paffhausen Farm, and the kids race started and finished at Beaverhead Brewing. Asher Burch placed first in the 5K. Followed up by Jacob Harvey and Colton Yoakum. In the 5K ladies Faye Holland was first with Abbi Lemelin coming in second and Laura Martin placing third. The 10 K results for the men are Caylon Yellow Robe first place, Corbin Greene in second, and Connor Steward in third. The ladies top three are Mandy Dearborn first, Krystin Slater second, and Kathy Lentz in third. The UMW Football team took on the MSU Northern Lights that story can be found here . The streets of Dillon were then transformed for Fall Fest. Trick or Treaters gathered in mass to walk up and down Idaho street and adjacent streets in search of candy and prizes. Businesses handed out goodies as participants took turns playing carnival like games. The library was transformed into a haunted house and clicked as people dared to venture through the doors. At the end of the day they recorded 696 clicks. The Metlen Hotel was a place for the brave to venture into as well as they hosted a haunted tour. DRM Motors parking lot and cars were transformed into a trunk or treat for those needing even more candy. Later in the evening the Dillon Montana Community Foundation hosted a 21 and older ladies night ride. Ladies dressed in their finest most witchiest costume and flew throughout the town. The Old Depot Theater hosted the movie Hocus Pocus 2. If you missed out on Saturday's fun there is still plenty to do the next couple of days. Tonight Be The Change 406 will be hosting a drive in movie night behind Town and Country Foods. The Witches Brigade will meet at the depot Park at 6 P.M. all ages and gender are welcome. Also don't forget The Beaverhead Maze and Pumpkin Patch is holding a haunted maze. On Monday Halloween Day you can stop by R.E. Miller & Sons for the costume contest they are hosting. Sugar Fest will be held at the old Wells Fargo Building hosted by the DA Church and Love Inc. as well as KDBM/KBEV costume contest to win a $100 gift certificate to Town and Country Foods.

The Cottage is a new business that will be having their grand opening on Monday, October 31. The Cottage is a woman-owned business. They are a metaphysical shop that focuses on one's spiritual well being. The Cottage will be carrying herbs, stones, books, candles, self-care products, crystals, jewelry, and a little bit of everything in between. The Cottage is located at 1025A Webster Lane right off of Lakner Lane. They will be holding a grand opening from 10 till 4 P.M. on Halloween. Check out this new business. You may find some early Christmas gifts or a little something for yourself.
