Search & Rescue Called Out To Gibbons Pass For Two Stuck Vehicles

Beaverhead Search and Rescue News

The Beaverhead Search and Rescue was called out on one rescue and one lost individual the evening of Saturday November 30.  The first incident was a rescue on the divide between Ravalli County and Beaverhead County.  The second was to be a search for 1 lost hunter.

The Dillon Sheriff received a forwarded 911 call from Ravalli County Sheriffs dispatch about 4 stuck vehicles on the Gibbons Pass road.  At 6:07 PM Dillon Sheriff paged search managers and members to aid in getting all individuals to safety.    It was determined there were actually two stuck trucks and one with a broken tire chain.  In one of the vehicles was a 30-40 year old man on oxygen with 2 kids, 3-5 years old.   It was not known how many in the other vehicles.   Three hasty teams were deployed between 7:15 PM and 7:25 PM with a side by side, snowmobiles, and 4 wheelers with tracks.

At 8:45 PM one of the parties called from Lost Trail and reported all individuals from the stuck truck incident were out and safe.  At this time, they believed there may be a cross-country skier that was further up the road from where they were.  Deputy Peterson from Wisdom was on site and headed up the road to try and locate the skier.  The SAR hasty teams arrived at Lost Trail at 9:20. Deputy Peterson returned at 9:45 and said there was no reason to continue the search. All three hasty teams were dispatched back to Dillon with a chance of being rerouted to another possible search in the Medicine Lodge area.

The second incident was paged at 8:50 PM for a male individual who had sent an SOS message from his Garmin InReach stating he was lost.  The message gave a precise location of the individual.  Sheriff Wendt drove to the location to investigate and located the individual before hasty teams could be deployed.   The lost individual was in good health and returned to his hunting party.  Thank you for having the proper equipment.  It makes all the difference in the world when locating individuals out there in the world.

Thank you to all the S&R members who responded to the two incidents.  Working the first incident were Kolby Malesich and Russ Sigman IC command, and hasty teams made up of Steve Mock, Josh Yeadon, Weston Helle, Jack Bazemore, Aaron Beard, Adam Norlander, Keri Carson, and Wade Bush.  Those showing up to work the second incident were John Helle working with IC, and hasty team members Dalton Tamcke, Shane Puyear, and Trevor Hyland.  Both events were completed with all Search and Rescue members safely back in town at 11:00 PM.
