Evidence Confirms Grizzly Bear Attacked Hunter Near Augusta

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Evidence collected following a bear attack southwest of Augusta confirms that a grizzly bear injured an archery hunter Monday morning, according to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

The hunter encountered the bear on state land along Elk Creek. The hunter suffered significant injuries, but officials said they were not life-threatening.

Investigators collected bear hair from the victim and the attack site, along with tracks found in the area. That evidence confirmed a grizzly bear was involved.

Investigators also found the carcass of a domestic cow about 150 yards from where the attack occurred. Officials suspect the cow was killed by a bear.

FWP specialists are continuing to investigate the attack in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services.

In coordination with the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, officials have posted signs and closed the area where the attack occurred. The closure took effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice.

FWP said it cannot release the hunter’s identity or additional information about the person’s health.
