Hunter Injured in Bear Attack South of Augusta

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is investigating a bear attack that left an archery hunter with significant injuries Monday morning on state-owned land south of Augusta.

According to FWP, the hunter was in the area of Elk Creek and Haystack Butte on September 14 when he encountered a bear and was attacked.

The hunter sustained what FWP described as significant but fortunately non-life-threatening injuries. Following the attack, the hunter was able to drive himself home before being transported by private vehicle to Benefis Hospital for treatment.

Bear Species Remains Unknown

FWP game wardens and bear management specialists are investigating the incident. Officials said the agency's priority is human safety, and signs are being posted in the area warning the public about bear activity.

At this time, officials have not determined what species of bear was involved in the attack.

No additional details about the circumstances surrounding the encounter have been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.

FWP Reminds Hunters to Be Bear Aware

With hunting seasons underway across Montana, FWP is reminding hunters that they can reduce the risk of bear encounters by packing meat out as quickly as possible and remaining especially vigilant when returning to a harvested animal.

Hunters should carry bear spray, watch for fresh bear sign and avoid approaching an animal carcass that has been claimed by a bear. FWP also recommends moving gut piles into open areas and at least 100 yards from a carcass when possible.

Bird hunters should use additional caution around thick brush and waterways where grizzly bears may use heavy cover for day beds. Hunters with dogs should also remain alert for fresh bear activity.
