Rocky would answer as they went on to outscore Western 17-9 across a seven-minute span behind and take a 69-62 lead into the final ten minutes. A contested layup that resulted in a pair for Abi Adedo sparked a 7-0 run for the Bulldog men and tie the game with eight minutes on the clock. It was Haverfield who continued to keep Western in the game, hitting a pair of free throws and taking it to the hoop for a narrow 77-76 lead with five to go. Pitcher added to the score following a bit time dunk on an open hoop. With neither team getting out to more than a three-point lead down the stretch, the Bulldogs would head to overtime with Rocky knotted up at 87 apiece. Western remained hot from the start in overtime, seeing Kevin Bethel go coast to coast to put UMW up five at 94-89 with just under three in extras. • Momberg Ties Western Three-Point Record In Win Over Rocky Mountain

Lindsey Branch, UMW Sports Information Picture credit Terri Haverfield DILLON, Mont. – Montana Western put together an impressive performance today after they defeated the RV Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears 86-65 this afternoon. Joelnell Momberg's seven threes helped her to a career-high 24 points in the game. She ties the school record with the total, a record she now shares with alumni Alison Burlingame (1999) and Jill Dana (2007). How It Happened Western took control of the first quarter early on, pushing to a 16-7 lead in the first four minutes behind six from Momberg. Momberg would hit nine points on the way to a 21-14 Western lead heading into the second quarter. Shainy Mack banged a pair of three-pointers that kicked off a slew of triples for the Bulldogs. Montana Western would go on to hit seven threes in the first half alone and take a 45-32 lead at the half. The Bulldogs continued with their three-point barrage as Mack drained her fourth three just seconds into the third quarter. Despite the hot start, Rocky went on a 9-2 scoring run across a three-minute stretch to close back in to 50-41. Momberg continued to add to the Bulldog three count as she hit a pair of threes down the stretch to help UMW to get back out to a 62-50 lead heading into the final ten minutes. Western kept the momentum and rattled off four threes and rode a 64.3 shooting percentage through the fourth to outscore Rocky 24-15 in the quarter and win by a final score of 86-65. Notables Western's three-point total of 14 threes neared the record of 16 total in a game, a record that has been held since 2007 against Walla Walla College. Keke Davis led the team in rebounds after she totaled nine in the contest. • Five Bulldogs Score In Double-Digits In Win Over Orediggers

Lindsey Branch, UMW Sports Information BUTTE, Mont. – After a two-game slide, the Bulldog women's basketball team got back in the win column and defeated the Montana Tech Orediggers (10-7, 1-3) tonight by a final score of 75-55. After taking a narrow 30-26 lead into the half, Montana Western (10-7, 2-2) outscored the Orediggers 45-29 in the second half to run away with the game. Five Bulldogs surpassed double-digits in scoring. How It Happened Montana Western was hot from the start, hitting 63.3 percent from the field and drained three shots from the arc in the first quarter alone. With the Orediggers taking a two-point lead two and a half minutes into the second quarter, Isabella Lund broke the scoreless streak and Jordan Sweeney hit a triple to give UMW the lead once again. Oredigger Challis Westwater answered and brought the game back to one point, but the Bulldogs would pull away down the stretch as Western went on a 6-0 run. UMW would take a four-point lead into the break at 30-26. Western found their stride in the third quarter, running on to score 28 points in the third and holding the Orediggers to 14. Shainy Mack led the way after she hit three triples in the quarter. UMW would take as much as an 18-point lead in the fourth before the Orediggers pushed back. A three from MT's Ally Cleverly sparked a 9-0 run that brought the game back within single digits. Despite the scare, Lund's four-point play ended the hope for the Orediggers and UMW closed the game on their own 13-0 run. Notables Western's defense forced the Orediggers to 14 turnovers in the game. The Bulldogs were able to convert those to 25 points in the game. UMW hit 50.8 percent from the field tonight. This is the first night the Bulldog's have surpassed 50 percent shooting from the field since Dec. 19 against Benedictine-Mesa (Ariz.). Five Bulldogs hit double-digits in scoring, with Sweeney leading the way with 19 points. She also added seven assists and four rebounds. Mack followed with 18 points and three rebounds. Maddy Moy , Joelnell Momberg , and Lund each hit double-digits. Moy also led the Bulldogs with six rebounds and Lund led with three steals. Up Next Montana Western moves to 2-2 in conference play and will return to Dillon for a matchup with Rocky Mountain College. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in the Straugh Gymnasium.

  • Bulldogs Come Up Short In Clash With No. 8 Orediggers

Lindsey Branch, UMW Sports Information BUTTE, Mont. – The Montana Western men's basketball team (8-9, 1-3) came up just shy of an upset tonight after they played the No. 8 ranked Montana Tech Orediggers (14-3, 4-0) to an 81-76 game. Stepney led the Bulldogs with 23 points on the night. He also went a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe. How It Happened A battle for position early on in the game saw the Bulldogs take a five-point lead after Michael Haverfield hit a three pointer for a 14-9 Western lead. Tech pieced together a quick 5-0 run that was capped by a triple from Asa Williams to take the lead back from Western with 11:00 minutes remaining in the first half. The remainder of the half continued much like the start, with neither team taking more than a five-point lead before the other would charge back to flip the lead. Though down five with under a minute to play, Jalyn Stepney capitalized on a layup with just 12 seconds left until half. UMW would trail Tech 35-32 at the break. Unlike the first half, the Bulldogs were slow to get going as the Orediggers ran on an 11-2 scoring run through the first four minutes of the second half. Trailing 46-37, Western found their spark behind Stepney who hit a pair of triples on back-to-back possessions. A pair of layups from Christian Pitcher coupled with a free throw from Haverfield got the Bulldogs right back in it, tied up at 51 all. The power struggle continued down the stretch, seeing neither team pull away and a perfect storm for a battle to the end. Despite a three from Stepney that cut the game within four, the Bulldogs were unable to overcome the Orediggers in the amount of time left and fell 81-76. Notables So far this season, Western is 4-7 in games that have been decided by 10 points or less. Both teams were neck and neck in shooting, with the Bulldogs taking the slightest edge after they hit 45.8 percent from the field. The Orediggers hit 45.5 percent from the field. Western struggled from the charity stripe, hitting just 13 of 20 from the line. Stepney led the way with 23 points, hitting four of six from the three-point line. He also added three rebounds and a steal. Haverfield and Abi Adedo each hit double-digits in scoring. Haverfield totaled 15 points on four out of nine threes. Adedo added 14 points. Up Next Montana Western moves to 1-3 in conference play and will be returning to the Straugh Gymnasium this Saturday with a game against RV Rocky Mountain College. Tip-off is at 4pm MT.

One cold, clear, winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents of Almost, Maine, find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream. Performances will be held at the University of Montana Western’s Small Auditorium located on the third floor of Main Hall. Evening shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday with matinee shows available at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Written by John Cariani and directed by Stephen Alan Seder, this performance features students from UMW’s “Introduction to Acting” course and guest artist Christina Scruggs. • Commission To Consider Amendments On Upland Game Bird, Black Bear Regulations

HELENA – The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission will consider two amendments to the proposed 2024 Upland Game Bird Regulations and one to the Black Bear Regulations when it meets Feb. 16. The proposed 2024 Upland Game Bird Regulations are currently out for public comment. The two amendments would adjust the regulations for nonresident bird hunters. The first amendment would move the upland game bird season start date from Sept. 1 to Sept. 15 for nonresidents. The second amendment would adjust the bird dog training season start date for nonresidents from Aug. 15 to Sept. 1. The amendments are sponsored by Commission Chair Lesley Robinson but were requested by FWP. The amendments reflect comments FWP has received on the regulations. Black Bears The commission will also consider an amendment from Commissioner Brian Cebull that would adjust statewide black bear regulations. The amendment would have the spring season end June 15, subject to already established quotas and subquotas. The amendment would set the season in Bear Management Unit (BMU) 520 to May 1 to June 15. It would also set a female bear quota of 11 in the fall and 12 in the spring for BMU 580. The amendment would also establish that “any BMU without a quota or sub-quota … would close with regular public notice after May 31 if the cumulative spring harvest to that point exceeds 37 percent of female bears.” Cebull’s amendment would also expand the pilot project in FWP Region 1 that allowed hunters to submit extracted teeth rather than presenting head and carcass to FWP. This would expand to FWP regions 2, 3, and 4 and would require hunters to submit two extracted molars rather than one. The commission will take comment on the two amendments through Jan. 31. To comment on the amendments, please email FWPComm@mt.gov . Comment on the amendments can also be made during the Feb. 16 commission meeting. To comment on other commission items, click here .

  • BCHS Class Of 1969 Donates New Beaver Mascot

Friday night the Class of 1969 would like to present the BCHS with a new taxidermy Beaver for the B.W. Lodge Gym Lobby. The BCHS alums would like to dedicate and donate the Beaver, symbolizing the school’s mascot. The original Beaver, located in the gym’s lobby for 50 years, was donated to the school in 1969 by the DeLeon brothers, Dan, Class of 1969 and Jack, Class of 1971. The beaver had been trapped on the Big Hole River by their older brother, Nick, Class of 1967. During a tour of BCHS during the Class of 1969’s 50th Reunion, it was noted that the original Beaver had deteriorated due to age and UV light damage. The class agreed that it needed a face lift. The Class paid to have the Beaver revived and renovated and put in a new UV resistant glass case to again grace the lobby of the Lodge Gym. The new Beaver is mounted on the original log used in the DeLeon mount. The new mount includes the original plaques and one new plaque. Taxidermy work was done by Tyler Barnes of Hunter Taxidermy of Dillon. The large evergreen tree on the west side of the main entrance to the B.W. Lodge Gym was also donated by the Class of 1969.   A new bronze memorial plaque, rededicated in June 2021, is placed at the foot of the tree to honor Phil Hawkins, Tom Mooney and Ray Rebich, three Class of ‘69 classmates killed during their senior year. The tiny tree planted in 1969 has grown to the stately giant that beautifully adorns the building and honors their memory.

  • 3 Fishing Access Sites In Southwestern Montana Close On Jan. 16 Due To Flooding

Emergency closures went into effect on Tuesday at three fishing access sites in southwestern Montana due to flooding. The sites include Selway Park Fishing Access Site on the Beaverhead River, and Valley Garden and Ennis fishing access sites on the Madison River. These sites will be closed until further notice. Recent cold weather has led to ice jams on rivers in these areas, causing ice and debris to flow into the sites. The combination of unsafe conditions includes flooded areas, moving ice and debris, and potentially unstable trees. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will reopen the sites when conditions allow. Additional site closures may be in effect already or required later, depending on weather and river flows. Current restrictions and closures of FWP-managed lands and waterbodies can be found online at fwp.mt.gov/news/current-closures-restrictions . Recreationists are encouraged to use caution when visiting rivers because of unseen hazards, as well as flow and ice conditions that can change suddenly. For more information about river recreation safety, visit fwp.mt.gov/activities/boating/river-ethics .

  • Cold Weather Causes Ice Jams And Flooding On Beaverhead River & Selway Park

This weekend’s record cold temperatures are causing not only headaches for homeowners with frozen pipes but also with ice jams that lead to flooding. Sunday morning Dillon saw ice jams on the Beaverhead River causing it to back up on the bridge for Lakner Lane. This has caused flooding into Selway Park as well as neighboring fields. At the time of this release Southwestern Montana News spoke to Sheriff Wendt who made a phone call to Disaster and Emergency Coordinator Tom Wagenknecht who stated they are working on getting some gravel and sand with the help of locals to try and detour and stop the flooding. Please avoid these areas as they can be dangerous.
