- Man Hospitalized In Bear Encounter North Of Columbia Falls
KALISPELL — A man was hospitalized after an encounter with a grizzly bear on Thursday evening approximately 2 miles north of Columbia Falls in Flathead County. A 72-year-old man was alone picking huckleberries on Flathead National Forest lands off the North Fork Road when he reported encountering a bear that charged and attacked him. The individual shot and killed the bear with a handgun. FWP wardens and bear specialists responded to the incident and confirmed that an adult female grizzly bear was killed. FWP is working to verify if any cubs are present. FWP determined it to be a surprise defensive encounter. No additional information is available at this time. Be bear aware Montana is bear country. People should be prepared to encounter grizzly or black bears in Montana. Avoiding conflicts with bears is easier than dealing with conflicts. Here are some precautions to help avoid negative bear encounters: Carry bear spray and be prepared to use it immediately. Travel in groups whenever possible and make noise, which can help alert bears to your presence. Stay away from animal carcasses, which often attract bears. Watch for signs of bears such as bear scat, diggings, torn-up logs, turned-over rocks, and partly consumed animal carcasses. Follow food storage orders from the applicable land management agency. If you encounter a bear, never approach it. Keep garbage, bird feeders, pet food and other attractants put away in a secure building from March until December. Keep garbage in a secure building until the day it is collected. Certified bear-resistant garbage containers are available in many areas. Never feed wildlife. Bears that become food conditioned lose their natural foraging behavior and pose threats to human safety. It is illegal to feed bears in Montana. - Hoot-Owl Restrictions Placed On Additional Rivers In Southwest Montana
Full fishing closure on stretch of Madison below Ennis Dam HELENA – A full angling closure and two new hoot-owl restrictions will go into effect on additional sections of the Madison River in southwest Montana. The full closure will go into effect at midnight tonight. The hoot-owl restrictions go into effect at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 18. Hoot-owl restrictions prohibit fishing from 2 p.m. to midnight each day. These closures and restrictions, which are due to warming temperatures and low flows, will stay in effect until conditions improve. Full closure takes effect at midnight tonight on the Madison River: From Madison Dam at Ennis Reservoir on the lower Madison to the footbridge at NorthWestern Energy powerhouse Hoot-owl restrictions take effect Thursday, July 18, include: From the footbridge at NorthWestern Energy powerhouse to the confluence with the Jefferson River From the Yellowstone National Park boundary to Hebgen Reservoir Hoot-owl restrictions remain in effect for portions of the Beaverhead, Big Hole, Blackfoot, Clark Fork, East Gallatin, Gallatin, Madison, Ruby and Sun rivers, as well as the Bitterroot, Jefferson and Silver Bow Creek in their entirety. To view a full list of restrictions, click here . FWP's drought policy provides for angling restrictions when flows drop below critical levels for fish, when water quality is diminished or when maximum daily water temperatures reach at least 73 degrees for three consecutive days. Water temperatures of 77 degrees or more can be lethal to trout. These restrictions are designed to protect fish that become more susceptible to disease and mortality when conditions like this exist. One short-term strategy to address heat-induced stress in Montana's wild trout is to reduce catch-and-release mortality by alerting anglers to fish only in the morning. Anglers can reduce stress on fish at all times of the year by getting fish to the net or in hand quickly, keeping them in the water and reviving them prior to releasing them back into the river. If high temperatures and extremely low flows persist, anglers may want to consider fishing areas with less stressful temperatures and conditions, such as larger lakes or reservoirs, or higher elevation waterbodies. Along with monitoring stream temperatures, FWP also monitors stream flows and in some streams holds instream flow water rights. FWP’s water program can issue a call on junior water users, when appropriate, to contribute to stream flows through the late summer and early fall. For more information on FWP water rights, click here .

- D.V.F.D. Along With DNRC Responding To Fire Along MT-324 Updated
Saturday evening the Dillon Volunteer fire department along with the DNRC, Lima Fire, Grasshopper Valley Fire, and USFS responded to a fire along MT-324 between mile marker 8 and 9. The fire was burning alongside the road in various places stretching about a quarter of a mile. Residents had water and shovels and were working on the fire before firefighters showed up. Mixed reports stated it jumped the road. As of now the fire is not reported as being extinguished. It is listed at 1 acre. Remember to check trailer chains are tight to prevent them from dragging and do not throw anything out the window that is flammable. We will update this story as more news becomes available. (Update) 7:48 PM Fire has been updated to 10 acres. (Update) Sunday 07/14 The fire burned a total of 63 acres. DNRC Press Release DILLON, Mont. – On July 13 at around 5 pm, what investigators believe was a trailer dragging a leveling jack, sparked a 63-acre wildfire off MT Highway 324, approximately 3 miles east of the town of Grant. Firefighters from the Dillon, Grasshopper, Grant, and Lima volunteer fire departments, alongside crews from the Montana DNRC and Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, successfully stopped forward progress by utilizing fire engines and strategic water placement by Forest Service and DNRC helicopters. Crews will continue to monitor the burn area and extinguish any residual heat. Firefighters across the state have been dealing with an uptick in human-caused wildfires, exacerbated by recent trends of high temperatures, low relative humidities, and increased wind speeds. Fire managers are asking our public to help them protect lives, property, and our beautiful natural resources by being extremely cautious with their activities. “It only takes one spark to do a lot of damage during periods of high fire danger,” said BJ Klose, Incident Commander, and Chief of the Dillon Volunteer Fire Department. “We ask that folks take extra caution and double-check what they are hauling and secure anything that can drag on the pavement and send sparks into receptive vegetation.” On average, 75% of wildfires in Montana are human caused. Residents and visitors can reduce fire risk through a few simple actions to protect themselves, their families, and the land: · Obey all fire restrictions. Visit MTFireInfo.org for information on fire restrictions in place throughout Montana. · If campfires are allowed, please do not leave your campfire unattended and fully extinguish it before leaving. If it is too hot to touch, then it is too hot to leave. · Make sure that your trailer chains or other pieces are not dragging, which can cause sparks. · If you are thinking about burning debris, make sure that outdoor burning is still allowed, and only burn on days with favorable weather. · Please call 9-1-1 to report a wildfire. For more information on wildfire prevention, active wildfires, fire restrictions, and wildfire preparedness, please visit www.MTFireInfo.org .
