  • Volleyball Finishes Preseason Play With Back To Back Sweeps

Lindsey Branch, UMW Sports Information SURPRISE, Ariz. —  The no. 15 ranked Montana Western women's volleyball team (8-2) finished up their preseason slate by winning a pair of matches at the OUAZ Invitational. They downed both Arizona Christian and Ottawa University Arizona in straight sets. How It Happened vs. ACU UMW found themselves on top early in the first set following a serving run by Taylor Ketchum who served up a pair of aces to put the Bulldogs out three early on. Two kills from Jaiden Perez paired with Firestorm errors fueled a 7-1 scoring run for the Bulldogs. The Red and Black were able to go on and hold ACU to just 13 points in the set to take a 25-13 first set win. With set two shaping out to be a close contest, the two teams battled down the stretch with neither team taking more than a four-point lead. UMW would claim the final set win 25-23 after hitting a game-high of .294 with just four hitting errors. Taylor Petersen found success at the service line, serving up another pair of aces for the Bulldogs to give them a five-point lead. A kill from Peyton Vogl forced an ACU timeout late in the set, but the Bulldogs proved to be too much for ACU as UMW powered on to win 25-18. How It Happened vs. OUAZ OUAZ errors helped UMW get out to a hot start in the first set, with UMW jumping out to a quick 9-3 lead. Despite a quick 4-1 run for the Spirit mid-set, UMW was able to get back on track following three kills from Jazi Smith down the stretch to win the set 25-17. Errors continued to prove to be OUAZ's kryptonite in the matchup, seeing the Spirit hit a team -.032 across the match and racking up 24 errors, with nine coming in the second set alone. The Bulldogs went on to win the set 25-20. It was Smith once more who fired up UMW, knocking down three kills in a 6-1 run to open the set. Up 14-5, OUAZ found a bit of a groove and ran behind a 7-0 run to close the gap to just two points. Leading by three, the Bulldogs allowed just two points from OUAZ at the close of the set to win 25-19. Notables Today's back-to-back sweeps were the first time the Bulldogs have accomplished two straight sweeps this season. Smith and Vogl led the way in the first set with nine kills apiece and matching hitting percentages of .333 percent in the game. Smith led the Bulldogs in game two today with 15 kills. Kelsey Goddard led in the back row on the day, totaling 30 digs between the two matches. Danyel Martin led in the front both games with a total of eight blocks in both matches.   Up Next The Bulldogs move to 8-2 this season and will kickstart Frontier play on Sept. 13 against MSU-Northern at 7 p.m. for the Bulldogs' home opener.

  • Firefighters Quick Response Stops Lightning Caused Fire From Spreading Near Lima

Monday afternoon a thunderstorm brought high winds a little moisture and a lot of lightning to Beaverhead County. Along with the lightning and high winds come fires and Monday was no exception. Most of the fires were contained and the acreage burned was kept to a minimum thanks to the quick response of our local fire agencies. The fires are listed below: COYOTE Newly reported, the Coyote Fire was an unattended campfire along Delmoe Lake Road southeast of Butte. It was contained at less than one acre in size. TEX Newly reported, the Tex Fire is located northwest of Coyote Lake in the Big Sheep Creek area west of Lima. Estimated at 3 acres in grass, responding resources knocked down the flames and will mop-up areas of heat this evening. MCDERMOTT Located northwest of Philipsburg in the Upper Willow Creek area between McDermott Gulch and Corduroy Creek, the fire increased in activity in heavy timber. The fire is estimated at 20 acres. RATIO MOUNTAIN Fire behavior was active, with short crown runs, group torching, and isolated torching. The fire pushed westerly on the southwest corner, progressing beyond the unnamed drainage where it was previously hung up. Crews will address this area of heat if it advances further and backs down toward Little Whitetail Creek. A helicopter assisted the ground firefighters with water bucket drops. The fire is estimated at 1,158 acres. GROUSE Fire behavior was active, with the majority of movement north up the Reservoir Creek drainage and west towards the Cow Creek drainage. Firefighters worked to hold the fire along Pettengill Road and keep it north of Pettengill Creek. Two helicopters dropped water to cool areas of heat in the Grouse Lakes area to keep the fire south of Stine Mountain. Pictures are of the Tex Fire courtesy of Beaverhead County Sheriff

  • Big Hole River To Close To All Fishing Starting At Midnight

HELENA –  The entire Big Hole River will be closed to fishing starting at midnight tonight, Aug. 30, due to low flows, high water temperatures and an unseasonably warm and dry forecast. Fishing restrictions and closures like these are designed to protect fish that become more susceptible to disease and mortality when conditions, such as low flows and high water temperatures, combine with other stressors, including catch-and-release fishing. Anglers can reduce stress on fish at all times of the year by getting fish to the net or in hand quickly, keeping them in the water, and reviving them prior to releasing them back into the river. Along with monitoring stream temperatures, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks also monitors stream flows, and in some streams, holds instream flow water rights. FWP’s water program can issue a call on junior water users, when appropriate, to contribute to stream flows through the late summer and early fall. For more information on FWP water rights, click  here . For a list of current drought-related fishing restrictions and closures, click  here .

  • Big Hollow Fire at 3414 Acres & 40% Contained

The fire is 3,414 acres and 40% contained. CURRENT STATUS + PLANNED ACTIONS: Yesterday, crews took advantage of lower temperatures and higher relative humidity's to extinguish any residual heat along the southern edge of the fire resulting in an increase of containment to 40%. Containment is a measure of confidence that even in the event of strong winds or other adverse weather, control lines will continue to hold. The fire did not experience any forward progression. Today, personnel will focus efforts on the northwest corner of the fire in the timber on Forest Service ground. This area of the fire experienced short-range spotting, ignition that occurs ahead of the main perimeter of the fire, and crews will begin to line and extinguish heat within the spots to ensure security in preparation for the expected high wind and low relative humidity that is expected over the fire area tomorrow. Helicopters will continue to concentrate water placement the northwest corner to aid ground resources. Light smoke will still be present from large fuels smoldering in the timbered portions of the fire. WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR: Yesterday cooler temperatures and lower wind speeds allowed for low to moderate fire behavior. The fire area did not receive any moisture.  Today’s forecast shows a small chance of showers along with a high of 57 to 62 degrees Fahrenheit. Winds are predicted to range from 10-15 mph out of the west with gusts up to 20 mph in the afternoon. A cold front passage forecasted for Tuesday will bring an increase of winds with gusts up to 30-40 mph out of the southwest and relative humidity's in the teens. EVACUATIONS AND CLOSURES All evacuation orders have been lifted. The public has also been asked to remain clear of the area to avoid impeding firefighting activity.
