- When Recreating On The Water This Summer, Be Safe And Follow The Law!
Unseasonably warm weather is occurring early in Montana, and many boaters and anglers have been going to the local reservoirs and other waterways to get some relief from the heat. However, along with having fun, folks need to follow all the laws while out and about. Wardens have been checking a slew of boaters and anglers recently, and some common issues are recurring as summer is getting underway: License possession while fishing : Many anglers contacted this spring and summer have not had their license in possession while fishing. This is a requirement by law. Anglers are required to produce their fishing license when requested by a game warden. A good recommendation is to carry the original printed license and hold a digital “copy” on a phone as a backup. The digital phone copy is legal, provided the license is quickly accessible and saved as a PDF, *screenshot of the license or a photo of the license. Sometimes, anglers have tried to rely on spotty cell phone service to look up their licenses via the internet, which has not always worked. Save a copy that you can find immediately! Required Safety Equipment on boats : Multiple citations have been issued this summer for insufficient safety equipment on boats. By law, the following are required for noted watercraft: A wearable U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device must be readily accessible for every person on the vessel, regardless of age. This includes, but is not limited to, all boats, kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis and canoes. All vessels 16 feet in length and over must have one U.S. Coast Guard approved throwable personal flotation device that is immediately available for use. Children under 12 years of age must wear a life jacket on a boat less than 26 feet in length that is in motion. Towing/Skiing: There must be at least two people on board a towing vessel, one operator/driver and one observer. If the operator is 12 or younger, the observer must be at least 18. The person(s) being towed must be wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket Fire extinguishers: All motorboats must carry a U.S. Coast Guard-approved type B fire extinguisher. * Exception: motorboats less than 26 feet long that are propelled by an outboard motor and are completely open construction (no closed spaces where gasoline fumes may be trapped) are not required to have a fire extinguisher. Validation Decals on Boats : Wardens have found that most boats have followed this rule, however, a few boats are still missing their required decal. All motorboats, sailboats or personal watercraft that are registered in Montana must display two validation decals. Current validation decals are red in color and are in effect for a three-year period expiring Feb. 28, 2023. Validation decals may be obtained, free of charge, at any Fish, Wildlife & Parks regional office or at the fwp.mt.gov website. AIS Check Stations: ALL WATERCRAFT are required to stop at all open AIS check stations. Folks doing “drive-bys,” whether intentionally or unintentionally, are being cited. ALL NONRESIDENT WATERCRAFT must be inspected before launching in Montana. This is required by law. Proof of Inspection Paperwork : Many nonresident boats that have been contacted do not have their proof of inspection paperwork in their boat while on the water. Please always carry these. For more information on fishing or boating laws, please pick up a copy of the 2021 Fishing Regulations or Montana Boating Laws. Good luck and be safe out there!

- Montana Western Regents Professor Nominated for High Plains Book Award
Dr. Robert Thomas is a Regents Professor of Geology in the Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Montana Western and co-author of “Roadside Geology of Montana.” The publication was recently nominated for the 2021 High Plains Book Award in the Medicine & Science category. According to the High Plains website, “the High Plains Book Awards recognize regional authors and/or literary works which examine and reflect life on the High Plains. The High Plains region includes Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.” The “Roadside Geology of Montana” book is a complete guide to the geological history of Montana designed to be utilized from the state’s many roadways. Whether a professional or a curious traveler, this book is intended to be used by anyone fascinated by the geology of the Big Sky state. The publication is a revised second edition of the original “Roadside Geology of Montana” authored by Don Hyndman and Dave Alt in 1986. Hyndman is a recently retired Professor of Geology at the University of Montana and taught Thomas when he earned his master’s degree in the late ’80s. Hyndman approached Thomas about being a co-author for the updated second edition. “It was a great honor to be asked to be the co-author of this book, especially given the high profile of the book with the general public and the fact that I was replacing Dave Alt, one of the most well-known geologists in the profession in Montana,” Thomas said. Thomas worked on the publication for five years, traveling to almost every corner of the state gathering data, taking photos, and creating many of the illustrations used throughout the book. Thomas’s focus was on his backyard of southwest Montana, but he has traveled from the Yaak in the northwest to Alzada in the southeast, filling in new road guides and any other gaps in the book. Thomas says that even though it is technically a second edition, everything is new and is an entirely different book. The Roadside Geology series originated in 1972 with “Roadside Geology of the Northern Rockies.” Now, nearly every state and one Canadian province have a book. According to Thomas, no other Roadside Geology book in the series has been nominated for a literary award like the High Plains award. Winners for all Book Awards will be announced at an Awards Banquet held in conjunction with the High Plains BookFest in September 2021 in Billings, Montana, circumstances permitting. To view the complete list of 2021 High Plains Book Awards Finalists, visit highplainsbookawards.org . Thomas hopes to tour the book this fall at local bookstores for signing events and presentations on Montana geology. For more information, please contact Robert Thomas at Rob.Thomas@umwestern.edu . To purchase a copy of the “Roadside Geology of Montana,” call The Bookstore in Dillon, Mont., at 406-683-6807 or visit mountain-press.com.
- Emergency Closure Announced For Cooney Reservoir Updated 06/22/2021
As the Robertson Draw fire near Red Lodge continues to burn, boaters and others planning to recreate at Cooney State Park this weekend should be aware that Cooney Reservoir will be a water source for firefighters and will be closed to recreational use. Aerial firefighters will scoop water from Cooney Reservoir to drop on the fire, requiring an emergency closure of reservoir. The park will remain open to camping and day use. On Thursday, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks announced that campfires are banned at all Fish, Wildlife & Parks properties in Carbon, Yellowstone and Stillwater counties starting this week because of fire danger. UPDATED 06/22/2021 Anglers and water skiers can return to Cooney Reservoir following an emergency closure. Aerial firefighters had been scooping water from the reservoir to drop on the Robertson Draw fire near Red Lodge. The fire is now 45 percent contained, and firefighters are using the Buffalo Bill Reservoir in Wyoming as the primary water source to treat the fire. Cooney Reservoir is open until further notice. Cooney State Park is open to camping and day use. Campfires are still banned at all Fish, Wildlife & Parks properties in Carbon, Yellowstone and Stillwater counties starting this week because of fire danger. FWP followed the lead of Carbon, Yellowstone and Stillwater county commissioners, who voted this week to enter Stage I fire restrictions countywide. The restrictions are in response to dry, warm weather that could increase the danger of human-caused wildfires. They will be in effect until further notice.
