FRONTIER FOOTBALL COACHES PICK PRESEASON FALL FAVORITES WHITEFISH, Mont., July 26, 2022 — Montana Western is the preseason favorite to win the 2022 Frontier Conference football championship in a poll of the league’s head football coaches. Carroll College and Rocky Mountain College tied for second in the balloting. College of Idaho finished fourth followed by Montana Tech, Eastern Oregon, Southern Oregon and MSU-Northern. Montana Western received four-first place votes, Carroll College received three-first place votes and College of Idaho received one-first place vote. College of Idaho, Montana Western and Rocky Mountain College tied for the conference championship in 2021 with identical 7-3 conference marks. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. First place was worth seven points, second place worth six points, third place worth five points, fourth place worth four points, fifth place worth three points, sixth place worth two points and seventh place worth one point. Plan for the week is to finish up the services on Idaho between Glendale and Bannack street as well as the storm drain. The services will be installed on Bannack between Washington and Idaho as well. The final connection on Montana and Bannack will be done on Wednesday or Thursday and then all the pipe will be installed. The paving prep will continue on Washington St. I don't know the exact paving date but I will find out and let you know. We are still waiting to get the survey fixed on Idaho between Center and Bannack. As soon as we have that we'll get the subgrade finished up and graved. It shouldn't take more than a day or two to gravel it and open it up. We will probably begin cutting some subgrade on Idaho between Bannack and Glendale late this week. Right now we are scheduled to have the curb machine on Aug 15. Concrete patching is in progress on Bannack.

First responders were called out to a one vehicle accident Sunday afternoon on I-15 Southbound mile marker 65. A red passenger car was traveling southbound when the occupant lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll onto the roof and come to a stop on the fence beside the road. The occupant was talking to first responders and was transported to the hospital for injuries sustained in the wreck.

Dillon History Days is on their third year of providing community minded activities to the people of Beaverhead County as well as those passing through, today the events kicked off with an open house at the PIMA Medical Institute located on Poindexter street. A Teddy Bear Picnic was held at Jaycee Park, despite having to be cut short due to sprinkler line testing and project workers stating the task needed to be completed and they couldn't wait for the event to finish. The Horse Power Roundup being held at the Depot Park started at 5 p.m. tonight along with the Beat The Heat car smash. Phillip Page will be singing his cowboy songs at the Jaycee Park, and starting at 8 p.m. you can put on your boots head down to the Elks Lodge and get your country line dancing on. If cornhole is your thing the Tap House right across the street will be hosting a tournament. If you missed todays activities they will start again tomorrow at 10 a.m. on Bannack street with vendors. The vendors had to be moved from Idaho St to Bannack due to the promises made by both the city and contracting crews not living up to them and having the street ready. Also a huge shout out to Mark Boka for taking matters into his own hands and watering down the streets to keep dust at a minimum. Watching people come together to make this event successful is what will help keep it coming back year after year and giving the Dillon Community something to look forward to in July. We will have a full picture gallery up of tomorrows activities.

The Jaycee Park has seen a lot of work and changes going into it each summer as it inches closer to the goal of completion. This year's improvements included new sidewalks and shading for those who enjoy the park. The Friends of Jaycee Park had started this year's improvements in April hoping to have them completed by the beginning of June, but mother nature had other plans that delayed the completion date. This pushed back both the splash pad opening and closing the park as the project moved along. The Dinner in the Park series was one of those events that also was pushed back later in the summer. Thursday's first Dinner in the Park did not disappoint, as those who attended were able to purchase taco salads and an ice-cream bar before being entertained by Levi Blom. Parents were able to kick back and enjoy the show when the kids would get restless they could head to the playground equipment, or cool off in the splash pad. Dinner in the Park will return next Thursday, July 28 with Christy Hays and dinner will be served by United Way. Dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. and the music will start at 6 p.m.

On 07/21/22 around 8:19 AM, Beaverhead County Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting a roll-over accident on I-15 Southbound near mile marker 98, near Moose Creek Hill. The call was directed to Butte Silverbow County as the accident was in their county. It became known to Montana Highway Patrol that the occupants of the vehicle were picked up by a passerby and dropped off in Melrose. Around 9:00 AM a concerned citizen called in to report two suspicious males that were looking in cars at the Salmon Fly Campground/Fishing Access just outside of Melrose. Beaverhead County Sheriff Deputies responded to the area to look for the males as well as assist Montana Highway Patrol. It was determined that the two males that were looking in the vehicles were the occupants of the roll-over accident that had fled the scene of the crash. Prior to Law Enforcement arriving the two males had fled from the campground and into the wooded area near the campground. Law Enforcement pursued the two males but were unable to locate them due to the densely wooded area. Montana Highway Patrol called upon their Special Response Team to come and assist with the search of the two males. Along with the Special Response Team came two highly trained tracking K9’s. They deployed into the wooded area and proceeded to track the two males. One male, identified as Antonio Baca Ramirez Jr. (age 28) of Thompson Falls, decided he had had enough and turned himself into Law Enforcement. He was transported by ambulance to Butte for his injuries sustained from the roll-over, where he was later released to Adult Probation and Parole. Around 3:00 PM Beaverhead County Dispatch received a call from Butte Silverbow who advised a local rancher had located the second missing suspect near his residence. The rancher held the suspect at gunpoint until Law Enforcement could arrive and place him in custody. The male was identified as Stephen Goodman (age 27) of Missoula. Goodman was taken into custody and transported by ambulance to Butte for his injuries sustained from the roll-over accident. Goodman was found to be on the run after escaping a pre-release detention center in Oregon and had a Nationwide arrest warrant issued by the U.S. Marshall Service. In total, the events totaled an almost seven (7) hour manhunt through three (3) counties and involved Beaverhead County Sheriff’s Deputies, Federal Law Enforcement, and Montana Highway Patrol Troopers. It utilized four (4) K9’s to track and for dangerous drug recovery, two man-powered drones with inferred cameras, and the Special Response Team, totaling roughly 25 Law Enforcement personnel. This incident showed the importance of coordinated cooperation between agencies. The Beaverhead County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all the Law Enforcement agencies that assisted in this incident, as well as the helpful citizens of Melrose who lent a hand. If you build it, they will come, that was the message in the movie Field of Dreams. For some parents, Coaches, and local businesses that was also what they had in mind as they looked out over the gopher infested and neglected baseball fields of Ray Lynch Park. They wanted to build it back to a field that would attract baseball players and be able to host tournaments that would keep the play in one centralized location. After years of hard work, running into hurdles along the way and many more unforeseen problems, those all involved got to witness the dream become a reality. The Beaverhead Little League held the district tournament on July 15th thru the 18th. The tournament brought in 15 teams along with family members to cheer them on. With a dedication ceremony to kick off the weekend, both Beaverhead Little League All Star teams were the first to play on the field, followed by a weekend filled with tournament play. After a few rainstorms, some high wind and some hot weather the Beaverhead 8-10U team pulled out a third-place spot in the tournament and punched their ticket to state. The Beaverhead 10-12U would place third in the tournament and will not be going to state. The tournament brackets and winnings are below:

Due to an imminent safety concern, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is closing the Yellowstone River from the Mayor’s Landing Fishing Access Site (FAS) to Sheep Mountain FAS, which is about an 8-mile stretch of the river and includes the Highway 89 Bridge FAS. Mayor’s Landing FAS will remain open for take-out access for river users, and Sheep Mountain will remain open for launching. FWP is working closely with the Montana Department of Transportation, which reports the railway bridge near U.S. Highway 89 that crosses the Yellowstone River east of Livingston is dangerously close to falling into the water. The closure will remain in effect until the safety issues are resolved. For all restrictions and closures, look at the FWP website.

Celebrating their 50th season, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks will be holding a free performance of Shakespeare’s tragedy “King Lear” on Monday, July 25, at 6:00 p.m. at the University of Montana Western Pioneer Federal Amphitheater on Legacy Plaza. Just bring your lawn chair, blanket, and a picnic dinner and enjoy an evening of Shakespeare! King Lear is a Shakespearian tragedy which introduces two fathers: King Lear, who has three daughters, and the Earl of Gloucester who has two sons. King Lear, the aging monarch of Britain, announces a plan to divide his kingdom among his three daughters. When asked to show their love of their father, his eldest daughters played along saying what he wanted to hear while his youngest daughter who truly loved him refused to say anything. This resulted in the banishment of the youngest while the eldest two split the kingdom. The eldest daughters turn on their father leaving him without a place to stay and struggling in a storm. At this point, Lear is going mad with rage from the way he has been treated by his daughters. Meanwhile, the younger son concocts a plan to show that his elder brother is untrustworthy and has plans to kill their father and take over his inheritance. On the run, the elder brother disguises himself and befriends the King. With a plan between the youngest daughter and the King to take back the kingdom, there is misplaced trust that results in their capture and order of execution. As with any Shakespearian tragedy, a series of deaths ends the play as others are left with the weight of the tragedy. In the summer of 1973, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks opened for their first season. At the time the company was comprised of students and community members under the direction of Dr. Bruce Jacobsen. The first season featured 13 performances in 7 Montana communities. Today, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks has become a mainstay of Montana summers, catering to the entire state of Montana in addition to regional performances in North Dakota, Idaho, Wyoming, and Washington. Local first responders are on scene battling a haystack fire on Highway 91N. The fire is right off of Spring Creek Road. They look to have the fire contained to the one haystack, but they do have some high winds to contend with. We will have more information if it becomes available.

Governor Greg Gianforte today announced Montana’s Registered Apprenticeship program has added 515 new apprentices and 41 new employer sponsors in the first half of 2022. Under the governor’s leadership, Montana’s apprenticeship program has expanded rapidly. More apprentices were added in the first six months of this year than in the first six months of 2018, 2019, and 2020 combined. New apprenticeship registrations this year have already far surpassed full-year totals in 2019 and 2020. “Apprenticeship programs empower Montana workers, expand their lifetime earning potential, and ensure employers have a highly-skilled workforce,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Everybody wins when we give both workers and employers the tools they need to thrive, including the more than 500 new apprentices and more than 40 new employer sponsors from the first half of this year. We’ll continue expanding apprenticeships as we develop our workforce, ramp up housing supply, and create more good-paying Montana jobs.” Montana’s Registered Apprenticeship program, administered by the Department of Labor & Industry, enables workers to receive paid, supervised, on-the-job training in more than 100 different occupations across Montana. “Nearly half of all job growth in Montana over the next ten years will come in apprenticeable occupations,” said Laurie Esau, Montana’s Commissioner of Labor & Industry. “One year after graduation, average wages for individuals who complete an apprenticeship are more than twice that of degree holders from other institutions. Each new apprentice registered and each new employer sponsor help us build Montana’s workforce pipeline. Expanding apprenticeship opportunities to even more Montana workers will continue to be a top priority of the Department.” The vast majority of the new apprentices and employer sponsors were added following reforms adopted by the Department of Labor & Industry at the governor’s direction earlier this year. Those reforms dramatically expanded employers’ ability to offer apprenticeships. The revised program rules enable more apprentices to work under the supervision of a trained journeyman, giving employer sponsors more flexibility in adding apprentices to their programs. The changes were widely praised by industry leaders that utilize apprenticeship training programs. Promoting and increasing access to apprenticeship opportunities and trades education to build a stronger Montana workforce are key pillars of Gov. Gianforte’s Montana Comeback Plan.
