NPLD Cave Cleaning Contact Zack Story at zack.story@mt.gov if you are interested in participating.

It's time for some post-season cave cleaning! In this volunteer event you'll get the chance to see the caverns up close and personal as we reduce some of the impact of our presence in the cave. The caverns need a bath. Over the course of the season, algae, lint and dust have built up with the thousands of visitors who have come to experience the cave, so it's important to periodically give the formations a good scrub so that they can continue to grow and change! In honor of National Public Lands Day, participants will help restore parts of the cave that have the most human impact.

Never cleaned a cave before? No problem! Everyone will meet for an orientation at 9am on Saturday Oct 2nd at the main (lower) visitor center and then we will continue on to the cave, toothbrushes in hand. We ask that all volunteers bring a mask, clean gloves (these can be gardening gloves), a water bottle, a headlamp, and clothing that has never been worn in another cave or mine (due to White Nose Syndrome). If you have a helmet or kneepads, we encourage you to bring these as well. All cleaning supplies will be provided.

If you would like to participate, please contact Zack Story at your earliest convenience, as there is a limit to the amount of people we can take into the cave this year. Please email him at zack.story@mt.gov before September 25th with your name, the number of people you would like to bring, and the equipment you will be bringing for yourself/may need us to supply.
