Two men were hiking with a dog off-trail in the Bear Creek, Madison Range area, around 8:30 PM on Tuesday, August 10. They encountered a sow grizzly with cubs. The close proximity to her cubs caused the bear to attack, both men sustained injuries before being able to use bear spray.
The two men were able to leave the area where the attack occurred without help. They both were treated for minor injuries at a later time.
According to a Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks news release a game warden investigated the scene of the attack along with law enforcement, and staff from the US Forest Service. The trails near the incident have been closed and signage has been put up warning people of the attack and a grizzly may be in the area. No further actions are planned at this time.
