Fishing Closure Lifted on Upper Big Hole River Near Wisdom as Water Flows Improve

WISDOM, Mont. — Anglers can once again fish a section of the upper Big Hole River near Wisdom after Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) lifted a fishing closure that had been in place since August 12, 2026.
The closure affected the stretch of river extending from Saginaw Bridge on Skinner Meadows Road upstream to the confluence with the North Fork of the Big Hole River.
The restriction was originally implemented due to low water flows under the Big Hole River Drought Management Plan.

Improved River Flows Allow Fishing to Resume
According to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, water flows in the affected section of the upper Big Hole River have improved enough to allow the closure to be lifted.
The closure was part of drought management measures designed to protect fish populations during periods of low streamflow.
Low water levels can create stressful conditions for fish, particularly when combined with warmer water temperatures and reduced habitat availability.
With improved flows, FWP has determined that the drought-related closure is no longer necessary for this section of the river.
Other Big Hole River Fishing Closures Remain in Effect
While the upper river section near Wisdom has reopened, anglers should be aware that annual spawning-related fishing closures remain in effect on other portions of the Big Hole River.
These seasonal restrictions are separate from the drought-related closure that has now been lifted.
Anglers are encouraged to review current regulations and closures before heading out, as restrictions may vary depending on the section of river.

Check Current Fishing Restrictions Before Heading Out
The Big Hole River is an important fishery in Southwest Montana, drawing anglers from across the region and beyond.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks continues to monitor river conditions and maintain fishing restrictions where necessary.
