The University of Providence stretched their lead out to as much as 13 with 7:18 left in the game, enough to keep the Bulldogs at an arms' distance away for the remainder of the game. It was Stepney once again who hit a jumper to cut the lead to five, but UP's Jevon Burton answered quickly with a three that sealed the deal and put the Bulldogs down eight with under a minute to play. - Museum Host Matt Stanchfield Firearm History Presentation
Thursday, February 15th, the Beaverhead County Museum hosted a presentation on firearms and how they helped in the shaping of American History. Matt Stanchfield, local firearm expert and historian presented to a group of about 50 attendees a short history on certain make and models of firearms and how they helped shape parts of American History. Matt had ten different models of firearms starting with the Brown Bess. This rifle started in 1719 and was around 1839. A flintlock musket the Brown Bess was used for hunting as well as a defense weapon. how people lived in this time period gave those a sense of just how tough living in the past was. Made one thankful for the heat and comfort of the Depot Theater, a building some would consider old and outdated. Matt then went on to give a brief history on the Colt Walker, Springfield 1861, 1860 Henry, 1884 Springfield, 1876 Winchester, 1889 W.W. Greener Shotgun, 1896 US Krag, 1917 US Winchester Enfield, and finally the M-1 Grand. Matt's knowledge of each firearm along with his humor kept the crowd entertained as well as learning from the firearms that helped shape parts of American History. - Hot Three-Point Shooting Lifts Bulldogs Past Skylights
Lindsey Branch, UMW Sports Information photo credit Terri Haverfield DILLON, Mont. – The Montana Western women's basketball team (14-11, 6-6) got back in the win column tonight after they defeated the MSU-Northern Skylights (10-15, 4-8) in a home contest by a final score of 69-57. "After a rough start, our team did a great job of keeping their composure and moving the ball offensively. I am proud of how they continued to hunt great shots and fly around on defense." Head Coach Britt Cooper said. The Bulldogs were hot from the arc, shooting a 46.2 percentage and hit a total of 12 from the line. How it Happened The Bulldog women took the edge early at 11-7, benefitting from a quick five points from Jordan Sweeney in the first four minutes of the game. The early Bulldog magic slowed, with the Skylights taking their own jabs and fighting out to a 19-14 lead at the end of the first behind a 53.8 quarter shooting percentage. Despite the deficit, Montana Western found their groove once again after Joelnell Momberg hit a three at a shot clock buzzer. She followed with a jumper and tied the game at 24 with six minutes to play in the half. The Skylights continued to put the pressure on with a strong defensive front, but Payton Hagy broke the scoring lull with a triple. Kyla Momberg followed and flipped the lead back in favor of the Red and Black and the Bulldogs were able to take a 34-30 lead into the half break. Hot shooting coupled with a rough start for the Skylights at the start of the third helped Western to a 52-43 lead heading into the final frame. Momberg's pair of threes was enough to put the Bulldogs over the edge down the stretch and the Bulldog women rode to a 69-57 win over the Skylights. Notables The Bulldog women outshot the Skylights 46.4 to 36.5 percent from the line. UMW totaled just seven turnovers in the game, their fifth straight game recording single-digits in turnovers. - Bulldogs Lose In Tight Battle With MSU-Northern
Lindsey Branch, UMW Sports Information Photo Credit Terri Haverfield DILLON, Mont. – The Montana Western men's basketball team (12-13, 5-7) lost their second-straight game after falling 72-68 in a tough battle with the MSU-Northern Lights (11-14, 3-9). In a game that saw numerous lead changes and knotted up action, the Lights found themselves at the charity stripe for 30 free throws in the game. They would go on to earn 24 points from the free throw line as Western put up an 11 for 13 performance from the line. How it Happened After what proved to be a slow scoring start for both teams, MSU-N got the first jump taking a 17-10 lead with 11 minutes to play in the first half. Abi Adedo hit a jumper that sparked a quick 7-0 run. Following a three-pointer from Kevin Bethel and a free throw from Adedo, the Bulldogs tied the game at 17 all with seven to play in the quarter. With just over a minute to play in the half, UMW took a narrow 29-27 lead behind a jumper from Quincy Taylor and a three-pointer from Jalyn Stepney . Despite the lead, the Lights capped the quarter with five unanswered points to take a 32-29 lead into the second half. A quick jumper from the hands of Michael Haverfield gave UMW the first points of the second half. The quick jumpstart was enough to keep the Bulldogs close with the Lights, though trailing for the next five minutes. It was Haverfield once more who finally got the Bulldogs over the hump and tied the game at 39 with 15:28 on the clock. After battling for position throughout much of the second half, the Lights ran behind a 9-0 scoring advantage across a two and a half minute stretch to take a 65-55 lead. Haverfield knocked down a three and converted it into an and one for the four-point play to close the gap to six with two minutes left. Despite closing the gap to two with 10 seconds after Stepney found the hoop on a quick three, the Bulldogs were unable to make it happen with the little time left and lost 72-68 to the Lights. Notables The Bulldogs outshot the Lights 45.5 to 35.7 percent from the field. MSU-N picked up 24 points from trips to the free throw line. UMW totaled twice the number of fouls of the Lights. They totaled 22 fouls compared to 11 from the Lights. Haverfield and Adedo led the Bulldogs, scoring 15 points apiece. Haverfield also added three rebounds, a pair of blocks and a steal. Quincy Taylor followed with 13 points, four rebounds and two assists. Bethel racked up six assists in the game while contributing eight points to the board. - Barrett Hospital & HealthCare Leads Montana with Advanced Olympus EVIS X1TM Endoscopy Technology
Dillon, Montana, Feb. 16, 2024 — Barrett Hospital & HealthCare is proud to announce a significant upgrade to its endoscopy department, with the acquisition of EVIS X1TM endoscopy equipment and endoscopes from Olympus, a global leader in medical technology. With this important advancement, Barrett Hospital & HealthCare has become the first healthcare institution in the state of Montana to fully update its endoscopy suite with the latest Olympus products. This upgrade reflects Barrett Hospital & HealthCare’s commitment to delivering a high standard of care to its patients. By embracing these advanced medical tools, we are enhancing our ability to perform efficient screenings and diagnose and treat a variety of gastrointestinal conditions. The Olympus EVIS X1 endoscopy system provides a combination of diagnostic and therapeutic innovations to help improve patient care and streamline endoscopic procedures. Physicians use endoscopy systems to help diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract such as acid reflux, ulcers, Crohn’s disease, Celiac disease, and colorectal cancer (CRC). An endoscope is commonly used during a screening colonoscopy, when a physician examines the lining of the colon and may remove any potentially cancerous growths, known as polyps. CRC represents the third most common cancer diagnosis for men and women with an estimated 153,000 cases diagnosed annually, according to the American Cancer Society. The lifetime risk for developing CRC is about 1 in 23 for men and 1 in 26 for women but varies based on individual risk factors. CRC is a preventable and treatable disease with a 5-year survival rate of up to 91%, if caught at a localized stage 2. The new Olympus EVIS X1 endoscopic equipment is designed to deliver sharp images and improved handling. 3 The system’s diagnostic and therapeutic innovations can help improve the ability to provide patient care and streamline endoscopic procedures. “Our mission at Barrett Hospital & HealthCare has always been to provide exceptional care and service to our community,” said Taylor Rose, Chief Executive Officer of Barrett Hospital & HealthCare. "By being the first in Montana to incorporate Olympus’s EVIS X1 endoscopic technology into our endoscopy department, we are setting a new standard for medical excellence within the state." - Search & Rescue News
Beaverhead Search and Rescue News Submitted by: Mel Rice, Public Relations Officer The Beaverhead Search and Rescue held its monthly meeting Wednesday Feb 7. The meeting was called to order by newly elected commander Kolby Malesich at 7:00 PM. After roll call and the treasurer’s report, Brad Wagner, communications officer, made a brief presentation on communications and a couple of new opportunities for the unit. Adam Norlander, newly elected training officer, presented up and coming training opportunities. In March there are several trainings: “Lost Person Behavior”, “FUNSAR” both sponsored by Lewis and Clark County SAR, and “Ice Rescue” sponsored by Ruby Valley S&R. Then there will be two trainings in April: “Wilderness First Aid” Lewis and Clark County SAR, and “Swift Water Rescue”, put on by Ruby Valley. There will also be short monthly training which will take place after each meeting. The unit’s annual campout training will take place in June. The next order of business was a report by the unit’s equipment officer, Evan Helle. He talked about a couple of new pieces of equipment and explained how well they work in the field. It was also discussed to purchase a new “Mule”. A motion was made and seconded to make such a purchase, the motion passed. Mel Rice reported that all equipment on the outside of the building had been moved so the county could start hauling in millings to level the area around the building and get rid of some very bad mud holes. Several loads of millings have been hauled in while quite a few more are needed. Of course the snow came at the most apropos time shutting down that operation. A summary of the unit’s annual fish derby was presented. The derby was very lacking in numbers but definitely not in enthusiasm. It was reported there were approximately 200 individuals braving the starting temperature of minus 38 degrees. Where the unit usually pays out on the top 4 trout and top 4 ling by weight on the adult side of the competition, this year we paid on the 4 trout but only on 2 of the 4 ling. In the kid’s competition, we only paid on 1 of 3 trout by weight and no ling. There were three 50/50 pots and 106 door prizes awarded. All and all it was a great day on the ice with no wind for the entire day. The general meeting was closed with good of the order by Kolby thanking all of the outgoing board members and officers; Trent Cottom, Lawrence Morrisroe, and Alex Dunn for their dedicated service. The meeting was adjourned at 7:50. Following the general meeting, Adam Norlander had a 30 minute training session on the use of probe poles and techniques used to search for victims that have been buried in avalanches. Please make sure you have proper clothing and equipment when heading out to enjoy what little bit of the white stuff we have received. Avalanche danger is extremely high. Don’t take things for granted when it comes to the chance of snow sliding on a slope. “In the Business of Saving Lives”, your Beaverhead Search and Rescue.

- Monida Pass Head On Crash Prompts Multiple Agency Response From Both Beaverhead County And Idaho First Responders
From Beaverhead County Sheriff's office. On 2/11/24 at 1855 hours, Lima Fire and Ambulance were dispatched to a head on collision at mile marker 6 I-15. Once Law Enforcement was on scene it was discovered that a single occupant traveling south in a trailblazer hit a patch of ice and lost control and went through the median into on coming traffic and hit a Chevy truck with four occupants head on. The driver of the trail blazer was pinned in the vehicle with life threatening injuries and the Jaws of Life had to be used to free the driver. The occupants on the Chevy truck were able to get out on their own but a few occupants had minor injuries. Lima Fire and ambulance, Idaho's Clark County Ambulance, Beaverhead County Sheriff's Office, Clark County Sheriff's Office, Montana Highway Patrol, Montana Road Department and several bystanders worked the scene and helped get the injured into the ambulances and transported to Idaho Fall hospital. The debris and vehicle were quickly removed and the highway was reopened. On a personal note I am so proud of the response and professionalism from everyone involved. A tragic accident far from anywhere and the amount of people involved this could have been a different story and a possible fatal. Instead it's a heroic act and a long road to recovery for a few but at least they are on that road!! Sheriff David Wendt Photo Credit Beaverhead County Sheriff's Office
