Morning Update from the Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF. Size: estimated at 230 acres Resources on Site: 4 type 2 hand crews; 5 engines; 2 helicopters available to assist Total Personnel: 116 Numerous firefighting resources are present along the Pioneer Scenic Byway (Mt Hwy 73). Motorists in the area are urged to be aware of the increased traffic, slow down, and yield right-of-way to firefighting apparatus and vehicles. Fire managers are urging people to stay out of the fire area, especially Pettengill Creek, Grouse Creek, Stine Creek, and the Stine Creek Road area, for safety reasons. Crews progressed with structure protection measures, working from the junction of Pettengill Road and along the Pioneer Scenic Byway to the north. Firefighters installed water-handling equipment (pumps, hoses, and sprinklers) around structures in the Pettengill Creek area. Fire behavior has been very active, including group tree torching on all flanks, short runs, and spotting. Fire activity increased yesterday, as afternoon thunderstorm build-up created gusty outflow winds. CLOSURES AND RESTRICTIONS: A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place over the fire area. The Forest is in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions. See mtfireinfo.org  for information on fire restrictions. The fire is burning in the upper end of Grouse Creek off the Pioneer Scenic Byway on the Wisdom Ranger District. Fire behavior has been extreme, with torching and short upslope runs in heavy timber. Fire managers are urging people to stay out of the fire area for safety reasons. Fire managers and agency officials are discussing necessary area and trail closures. Ensuring public and firefighter safety and protecting life and property are of the utmost importance. CURRENT STATUS/PLANNED ACTIONS: The fire is moving primarily up the Grouse Creek drainage and sub-drainages. Both flanks or sides of the fire are moving actively, with fire backing downhill towards Pettengill Creek and spotting to the north towards Grouse Creek. Firefighters are assessing structures from the junction of Pettengill Road and along the Pioneer Scenic Byway to the north. They will be scouting for opportunities for firefighting operations, utilizing both natural and manmade control features. Crews will be working to improve and bolster fuel breaks previously constructed during the Alder Creek Fire of 2021. Firefighters will be installing water-handling equipment (pumps, hoses, and sprinklers) around structures in the Pettengill Creek area. WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR:  The fire is burning mainly in a subalpine fir fuel model, in heavy timber on steep rocky terrain. Available fuels are unseasonably dry and include large amounts of standing dead and down trees. Fire behavior has been very active and extreme, including individual and group tree torching on all flanks and spotting. Dead fuels along the ridges at the highest elevations are consuming completely. If winds align with terrain, in combination with the dry fuels, extreme fire behavior with active movement can be expected. These conditions pose additional hazards to firefighters, limiting access and affecting on-the-ground progress. Weather on Monday trends warmer with increased wind in the afternoon, elevating fire weather concerns. The next change for precipitation will be Tuesday, with chances for showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. High temperature will be in the 80s, with breezy conditions and gusts to 30 mph. Widespread haze will persist.

  • Firefighters Responding To Fire Behind Gun Range On Ten Mile Road (Updated 07/29 12:00 P.M.)

Update 07/28 10:13 P.M . From D.V.F.D. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be careful & think twice about your activities when it's this dry. DVFD as well as Grasshopper Valley Volunteer Fire Dept & EMS , Montana DNRC Dillon unit, Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest Dillon Fire Crew & Beaverhead County Sheriff's Office was able to contain the fire near the Dillon Rifle & Pistol range. 495 acres burned & could have been many more. The fire fighting resources statewide as well as regionally are being spread thin & we were happy to see the air support to enable us to complete our mission without losing any structures. Press Release from DNRC Shortly before 3 pm on July 28, multiple crews and air resources responded to a fire at the rifle range on 10 Mile Road west of Dillon, MT. Firefighters from the Dillon and Grasshopper Volunteer Fire Departments, along with crews from the Montana DNRC and the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest,  were assisted by aerial resources using retardant and water drops. “The forward progress was stopped,” said Incident Commander trainee Tyler Reum. “We will continue to patrol and mop-up into the evening and following days.” Reum estimates the fire burned approximately 494 acres. Extreme heat and drought conditions throughout the state of Montana have increased the risk of wildfires. It only takes one spark to start a fire and professionals are asking the public to take caution when doing activities such as shooting during high fire danger. Sparks can come from a bullet striking a rock or a metal target, as those who responded suspect was the cause of this fire. Many areas have implemented fire restrictions to help reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires. To find out more about these restrictions, and to learn more about protecting your property from a wildfire, please visit MTFireInfo.org .  A grass fire is burning off ten mile road on the North side of the road. The fire is being fought with resources from the DNRC, Dillon Volunteer Fire, Grasshopper Fire, and other agencies. Two helicopters along with two planes are working on the fire as well. The fire was reported at 2:43 P.M. and the acreage has not been updated on it. This is a developing story and we will have more information as it becomes available.

  • At 74 Dillon Local Proves He Still Has What It Takes To Hike The Highest Mountains

Dillon, MT local Wade Hansen has been on a quest all his life to hike up to the tallest mountains in and around Beaverhead County. After accomplishing these hikes, he started to look at mountains in other states and this year he climbed up Mount Elbert. For any person this is a feat but keep in mind Wade is still young at 74. Mount Elbert is 14,433 feet and is the highest mountain in Colorado. On June 25, 2024, Wade’s goal was to hike uphill for 8 hours. This got him to an elevation of 13,172 feet, that is 2,000 feet higher than Tweedy Mountain, the highest mountain in the Pioneers. Satisfied with his accomplishments Wade then had the task of walking back down the mountain to his start. A little over five hours later Wade was back where it all started and at 74 years old, he knew he still has it.

  • Agencies Implementing Fire Restrictions In Southwest Montana

Dillon, MT July 23, 2024 — Interagency fire management officials in southwestern Montana are implementing fire restrictions this week. These restrictions apply to the following geographic areas: Madison County, Beaverhead County, Deer Lodge County, Silver Bow County, and Granite County. Fire restrictions affect private lands within the listed counties; state and private forested lands under the jurisdiction of Montana Department of Natural Resources & Conservation (MT DNRC); and lands under the jurisdiction of Bureau of Land Management (BLM), USDA Forest Service (FS), US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP), and Bureau of Reclamation (BOR). Various agency lands may be in different levels of restrictions (Stage 1 or Stage 2) and stages may change quickly, given our current conditions. Contact the agency responsible for management of the recreation site or area to verify whether campfires and other activities are allowed and/or if other specific exemptions apply to agency land. It is your responsibility to “know before you go.” Stage 1 fire restrictions: • Anaconda-Deer Lodge, Butte-Silver Bow, Beaverhead, Granite, and Madison Counties. • All Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest system lands. • Bureau of Land Management lands within the above-mentioned counties. • Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) fishing access sites, State Parks, and Wildlife Management Areas within the above-mentioned counties. • Montana DNRC state and private forested lands within the above-mentioned counties. • Bureau of Reclamation lands within the above-mentioned counties, including Clark Canyon Reservoir and Barretts Park. Stage 2 fire restrictions: • US Fish & Wildlife Service – Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. The restrictions will remain in effect until there is a significant change in fire danger. The purpose of fire restrictions is to reduce the risk of human-caused fires during unusually high fire danger and/or burning conditions. Fire professionals analyze several factors when deciding to enact fire restrictions. These factors include the number of human-caused fires, fire danger ratings, persistent adverse weather conditions, fuel moisture conditions, availability and/or capacity of firefighting resources, and the potential threat to firefighter and public safety. Fire danger across southwestern Montana is EXTREME. Forested lands at all elevations are dry. Firefighting resources in southwest Montana have recently responded to several human-caused starts. The Nation is at a Planning Level 5, with an abundance of fire activity and high demand for firefighting resources. Fire management officials are hopeful that by initiating fire restrictions, there will be fewer person-caused wildland fires.
