First off Maverick Mountain has opened, with 4" of new snow overnight, 4" in a 24 HR period, for a total of 12" at the base and 36" at the summit. Saturday Dan Dubuque will be live at Maverick Mountain from 3 to 6 P.M. you can hit the slopes, grab a live show and top your night off with a soak in their pool. Virginia City Winter fest also kicks off on Saturday at 10 A.M. a quick rundown from their Facebook page describes it as follows. The Virginia City Winter Festival is a fun packed weekend of winter "sports". Events include broom-ball, two man log sawing, kids sled race and whatever else we decide to dream up. The WF is held in the historic town of Virginia City. The main event is a 3 day long broom ball tournament. Other events include two man cross cut log sawing, dog in a wheel barrow race and various kids activities. Founding Date Feb 2006 So if you want to take a short drive and have some old fashioned fun the Winter Fest seems to be the place. Also it looks like the DAHA Ice Rink located at the Chris Kraft park is open for use, as well as the ice skating pond at Bannack. The pond is open from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M. and they recommend you call before heading out to make sure of the conditions. Loner skates are available from the warming house, with a free will donation to the Bannack Association. Also the lake has 10' plus of ice on it, my understanding is the bite is slow but getting away from it all and staring down a frozen ice hole can be very relaxing. Also the Beaverhead river is open from the Pipe Organ Bridge down, if you are feeling adventurous you could give winter fishing a try on the Beaverhead.
