The Montana Western Bulldog women's basketball team won their season opener today after defeating Dickinson State (N.D.) by a score of 83-58.
"We got a huge lift from our bench tonight on both ends of the floor. I really like how we were able to close out the game in the fourth quarter." Head Coach Lindsay Woolley stated after the conclusion of the game.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs held just a 22-20 lead in the first quarter. The Bulldogs were able to hang on to a 12-point lead at the end of the first half, behind freshman Keke Davis who picked up 14 points off of a strong second quarter going 6-6 from the field and picking up two three-pointers. Mesa King had four rebounds and eight points for the Bulldogs in the first half.
The Bulldogs continued to rally through the third and fourth quarters, adding another 37 points to the board while Dickinson State only added 24. Montana Western held the Blue Hawks to a 35 percent shooting from the field and 18 percent from the arc. The team also shot 45 percent on the day and 37 percent from the three-point line.
"We were all so excited to get on the court and play against someone other than ourselves. I think we had a lot of excitement going into the game. We had been working really hard in practice and had been looking forward to this game. It was a great start to the season and we did a great job executing on offense and playing together. Obviously, there were some things that we need to clean up defensively. I am extremely proud of our effort and this team win. We look forward to building our foundation and continuing our hard work." Senior Brynley Fitzgerald stated after the win.
Notables
The Bulldogs had a team accumulative of 22 assists, 14 steals, 12 offensive rebounds, and just six turnovers.
The Bulldog bench score 27 points and of the Bulldogs 83 points, 44 points were scored from the paint.
Jordan Sweeney and Brynley Fitzgerald led the Bulldogs with 15 points apiece. Sweeney had another three rebounds and five assists. Fitzgerald also had six rebounds and four assists.
Keke Davis had 14 points in the first half, shooting 100 percent from the field and just missed a free throw.
Up Next The Bulldogs will be hitting the road for numerous games across Oregon next week. They will first see Pacific University on Wed. Nov. 9 at 7PM MST in Forest Grove, Ore.
